greetings playgrounder's

My players are hunting a Dragon, and are doing it poorly

so, to better torment them, I plan on making a 'book' as part of the loot

One Thousand and One Tips of Dragon Slaying.

for the record, this is going to be IN CHARACTER advice.

the more you can gear it to a low-level party with almost no casting ability the better.

the less GEAR ORIENTED advice you can give the better.

have at it.

I'll offer the first bit.

1. ascertain the color of the dragon.

2. Don't give it an excuse to full attack you. (IC: Don't get any closer to it than absolutely necessary. If you have to walk up to it, don't stay there for any longer than absolutely necessary.

3. Target its weak saves. (IC: Dragons are resilient in body and mind, but not terribly agile, even by the standards of other creatures its size. Exploit this.)

4. Pack energy resistance of some sort.

5. Have high saves to protect against its breath weapon and sorcerer spells. (IC: Prepare yourself mentally and physically.)

6) Ground it. Flying dragons are many degrees of difficulty more...difficult.

7. Dragons fly, if you do not, make sure to have a way to reach the dragon or force it to engage you on the ground.

8. Dragons are clever, watch out for traps.

8. A dragon's hide is tough, clever scheming is often better than just hitting it with swords.

9. If that doesn't work, send someone down its throat to attack it from the inside.

10. Remember to take enough beasts of burden with you to carry the massive hoard, should you reach it. The animals can also be used to distract the dragon, if necessary.

10. Always, ALWAYS check for dragon eggs or the children of the killed dragon(s).
The Plot Gods will make sure that even if the dragon isn't born yet it knows you killed it's parents.

"Be aware of your environment and the surrounding area when combatting a dragon such as cliffs, caves, and other potential hazards for both yourself and to the dragon. Large rocks, proper leverage, a well placed lure within a canyon and the proper timing may spell the end for any dragon caught unawares."

13. Try to only fight White Dragons; they are dumb as rocks.
14. Avoid Black Dragons, they combine breathe weapons and AMF. Or cast Glitterdust and Grease while flying over head. Jerks.

15. A Well trained swordsman trained in the arts of swashbuckling and dervish is effective at fighting a dragon, they are trained to move in and pull off a fierce combo of attacks and move back before the dragon can do the same.

16. If the dragon is old enough for spells then wait before engaging it, dragons may on one day unleash their spells over a litttle spat leaving them without one of the most deadly weapons of the arsenal

17. If you have a party member trained in sneak attacking teh dragon try to get said party member into teh belly of the beast, they can unleash their combos continuosly on vitals with little danger to themselves.

18. If following the previous advice then don't put the whole party inside, this leaves the dragon nothing to do apart from cast spells to remove you.

19. Remember that IF you are planning to run up and attack the wyrm sword to claw (a chancy endeavor), the dragon can usually attack you before you can attack it [attack of opportunity from reach]. However, once it is engaged it will at least briefly concentrate on those that are close to it [almost all dragons get only one AoO because their Dex stinks and Combat Reflexes is useless to them], so if multiple heroes plan to engage the dragon in close combat, they should move toward it in concert with the most heavily armored taking the lead.

20. Flanking the creature is beneficial and generally prevents the dragon from affecting everyone with its deadly breath, but there is nowhere you can stand that the dragon can't hit you with something.

21. It's generally a safe assumption to expect dragons to take the least possible effect from spells. Never expect a spell to completely disable them. They are highly resistant to all such magics to which they are not completely immune.

23: Never stand in a cluster dragons have breath weapons

24: Dragons are tough so hit is hard, fast, and long before it those the same to you

25: They got claws, teeth, wings, scales, tails, and magics. So there your entire party in a singular body designed to kill. So remeber it's ok to use cheap tactics such as Admantium Nets or Chains to pin it down.

26: Never assume its power from its colour, any dragon with an int above 10 (which is pretty much all of them) is intelligent enough to disguise itself as another type.

27: Do as much research as possible, find out if it has class levels.

28: Prepare as many dispels as possible. Dragons have low caster levels in relation to their difficulty and are typically garbed in a huge amount of magical equipment, dispelling both can be the key to victory.

34. A good plan is half the work:
-Enlist NPC hirelings. They cost two silver a day each, and if you persuade them to get their wages AFTER the dragon is done with, they're basically free. Ok, your Leadership and Morality values go down a bit
-Lure the dragon outside of its cave. Then throw everything you have at them: spells, rocks, cannonballs, halflings, arrows, bolts and witty one-liners.

35. outsmart the dragon: learn to think like one. Only then can one become a true dragon slayer.
-If I were a dragon, where would I hide my treasure hoard? It must be near enough to sleep on it, yet well protected so those pesky adventurers won't get their filthy hands on it.

37) Archers are useful for attacking dragons. And you though they were useful for nothing!

38) If explosives are available, feel free to use them.

39) See if any good dragons lair near a vile wyrm. For the proper offering (bribe) they may join you in your battle.

40) I have often heard that the creature known as the behir has a natural hatred for dragonkind. If one is nearby, you may be able to play on this hatred to your advantage. Do not expect the creature to win this battle for you -- it is only a slight threat to all but the most youthful of dragonkind.

41) If you must fight a wyrm, fight to the death. Dragonkind have long memories and will take vengeance upon you if not slain.

42) Prepare meticulously for your battle -- one should never be willing to enter a fight with a dragon without weeks of preparation.

43) Bankrupting yourself to do battle with the beast is rarely a bad idea. You will usually recoup your losses with its horde, and any perishable items you purchased can be sold to lower-level adventurers who wish to embark on a similar quest.

45. Each dragon is different, but many are paranoid and territorial. If a dragon can be tricked into attacking its neighbor, you will have the treasure of two dragons and only need to kill one weakened dragon.

46. EVERY DRAGON IS DIFFERENT. Know your target. Meflorin the Greedy could be bribed or tricked; Kangor the Destroyer would burn you before you opened your mouth.

Professional Dragonslaying Barbarian here.
53. Even if you are competent enough to fight the dragon, it still has the ability to fly away, which can prove problematic.
54. A dragon always has more pride than it does brains, and it is both arrogant and confident in its power. One way to make sure that the dragon doesn't fly away is to strike at it's dignity.
55. How does one do that? First, you must catch the dragon off guard in its own home (which is a difficult feat in and of itself). This will cause the dragon to become undignified and angry, and thinking that you're not some mighty heroes by some random adventurers whose luck just ran out, will quickly start attacking you.
56. The longer the fight drags on, the more undignified the dragon becomes. Why haven't you fallen before it's awesome power? You stupid little rats! And the more undignified the dragon becomes, the more determined the dragon is to stick around to finish the fight, even in its death throes.
57. Of course, only the young and inexperienced dragons will fall for this. Older dragons have actually encountered creatures that are a threat to them before, and have learned not to underestimate lesser mortals. To make sure these older dragons don't fly off and plot their revenge on you, you're going to have to antagonize them to the point that the very sight of you will cause them to fly into a rage so intense that they froth at the mouth.
58. An easy way to do this is to murder their offspring while they're out hunting and leave their ruined corpses at the mouth of their den. Bonus points if you use their heads as helmets afterwards.
59. Invest in Dragon Bane Weaponry.
60. Have a +1 or better light weapon on hand in case it tries to swallow you.
61. Once you have slain the beast, take its head to the Temple of Kord to thank him for granting you the strength to fight this great beast.
62. Every time you slay a dragon, take its head (or if that's not your style, its feet) and have it fashioned into an article of clothing. Never take this piece of clothing off, as it grants 3 advantages:

It makes it easier to antagonize dragons.
You can easily show off how great a warrior you are, so that you can get free drinks at the inn and easily intimidate others.
It makes it easier to court princesses, who are often kidnapped by dragons and thus find that their panties are made moist by your dragonslaying prowess.

One of the main troubles in attacking a dragon is that it's probably covered in scales. These are incredibly hard to get a mundane attack through, and can absorb or even reflect magic. You know what isn't covered in scales? The stomach.

31. Don't.

32. If 31 isn't an option, make the dragon fight on your terms not it's own. Dragons are always prepared for you. Always.

"Don't" should be tip #1, followed by "2. No, seriously, DON'T" and "3. I'll say it once more in case you have an INT of 3 or something DO NOT GO TRYING TO KILL THE BLOODY DRAGON"

Of course, depending on the game system in question this advice ranges from being completely useless to all you ever need to know about slaying dragons. I remember a particular game where the magic dragon slaying spear actually broke on the dragon's scales. :smallfrown:

52: Kobolds may be near and they can prove a threat before the dragon.

70. Kobolds will never turn against their masters, they are even more dangerous than zealots which are nearly as dangerous as standing on the sun,

71. If there are 2 dragons then expect younger ones in the next room.

72. If the dragon has minoins it cares about then stand in the middle of them, it disenclines them to breath or cast fireball on you.

73. yes dragons can cast spells on you,

74. If the dungeon master in the sky if feeling evil then beware, this dragon might have prestige classes.

75. Never send one person on ahead to attack the dragon, everyone sneak in and be prepared to attack all at once.

76. the next advice applies to everythinh slaying.

77. He who is heroic dies first, this is why that craven rogue was the survivor of his last party,

78. dragons can qualify to become mages of the arcane order or initiates of the sevenfold veil,

79. this means they can create wards which maim an dseriously injure party members,

80. If your the only one reading this book then don't tell teh party members, pretend you know all this already, it will let you have more loot because it was you that gave them this knowledge and all alone.

86. A dragon's scales are thick and hardy, but it is huge and unwieldy, acids and Alchemist's Fire are your friends. Beware, for it may be immune to either one.

87. A canny thrower can lodge vials between the beast's scales, use this to your advantage.

88. Dragons are reasonable to catch on the ground, but lightning fast in the air, it will escape if you give it the chance and the reason.

89. On the other hand, they rely on flying in long, straight lines. Get something in the way or catch it in a cramped space to counteract its speed.

90. Any dragon with a large hoard has had time to find the perfect place to put it and has prepared so any adventurer like yourself only adds to it. Lure it from its lair to stand a ghost of a chance.

100. White Dragons are unquestioned master dragons of the freezing north. This isn't because they're powerful or bright or even because they particularly like the cold. This is because the wizards of the northlands have developed a spell that will incapacitate any dragon with one touch, no matter how old or powerful.

155. Listen to an owl gliding in for a kill. That sound can wake a dragon from a sound slumber at 100 paces. They can hear you.

156. A dragon can see as well from a candle as a human can from a bonfire. Even the slightest light will allow a dragon to hunt you from the shadows.

157. No man can hide within 100 paces of a dragon. If you can see it, it knows where you are.

158. Dragons can fly faster than a hawk and swim like a shark. Many can dig through dirt or sand. Some can breathe water as if it were air. Unless a dragon wishes to be found, it will not be.

159. Before a dragon was the size of a house, it was the size of a dog. Dragons are born into a world vulnerable to harm, having to hide, flee, and scavenge as they can. Do not expect a dragon to be brazen.

160. If a dragon has survived for over 200 years, you are not the first to try to slay it. Those before you did not succeed, so expect the dragon to be a worthy foe. Most that seek out a dragon do so to slay it, so do not expect it to be trusting.

161. To find a dragon, it must want to be found. If you want to find a dragon, make it want to find you.

162. A dragon's magics do not typically scorch or flay flesh from your bones. If a dragon wishes to do that, it has powerful claws and breath that can melt stone. The spells a dragon weaves are spells that protect it, strengthen it, and make it better able to find those that would kill it.

163. For all its strength, the dragon is but one creature. You are many. Learn from the hyena. When hyenas fight lions, they surround and harry it. When a lion focuses attention on one hyena, it retreats, only to have two on the lion's flank move forward to attack.

176. Alternatively, have them do something useful like using Entangle or Web to hold it in place whilst the people whose only job (and capability) is to do damage get to work.

177. Avoid lightshows entirely, bar acids and orb spells, dragons will often shake off magical blasts and may well be entirely immune.

179. Take 6(?) levels of Vassal of Bahamut. Evil dragons take 1d6 damage when they attack you, half of which is permanant HP drain. (IC explanation: Bahamut will protect you if you fight the viler dragons)

180. Sonic damage is your friend. No metallic or chromatic dragon is immune to or even has resistance against sonic damage.
181. Force damage may be an even better friend than sonic damage, as it does the same deal of damage to metallic and chromatic dragons and cannot be countered by a Silence spell.
182. While there are some true dragons that are immune to sonic and force damage, they are not native to the Material Plane and don't come here very often. If you're just starting out, you probably have no business going onto their home plane to fight these dragons anyways.

186: Dragons are bad for your health. Dragons harm nearly every organ of the body. Fighting dragons causes 87 percent of PC deaths, and is also responsible for many other physical and mental problems such as shock, broken limbs, dissolved flesh, flayed skin, and panic. Check your DM before using.

187. Recognize that, sometimes, the dragon wins.

(Based on an old poster I used to have- it showed a dragon leaning up against a tree, armor scattered about him, picking his teeth with a lance.)

205. If you're to be fighting dragons very frequently, consider taking levels in:
Dragonslayer, if cleric or a fighter/caster combo that focuses on hitting things and somewhat on debuffing the enemy
Dragonstalker, if a ranger.
Vassal of Bahamut, if a paladin or fighter
Platinum Knight if cleric, paladin or a fighter/caster combo that focuses on hitting things and somewhat on debuffing the enemy
206. Remember, dragons often have minions who are not dragons. Overspecializing may hurt the party. It's still a good idea to have someone around who is good at slaying things in general, such as a pure barbarian or fighter.
207. Those who do not have anti-dragon class features can compensate in their weapon enhancements (Dragon Bane for all, Fiercebane if you crit often, Dragondoom for melee and Dragonhunting for ranged.)
208. Fighters have many feats to spare. Although Clever Wrestling, Cunning Sidestep, Close-Quarters Fighting and Overhead Thrust cannot be taken as fighter bonus feats, they make fighters more useful against a number of creatures, including dragons.
209. Those with 13 WIS and general feats to spare should take Dragon Hunter. If they've got nothing better to spend feats on, Dragon Hunter Defense and Dragon Hunter Bravery are also good.
210. Similarly, anyone with 13 INT and general feats to spare should take Dragonfoe. Rogues may additionally want to take Dragonbane, and those who crit a fair amount of the time want to take Dragondoom (though this requires Dragonbane)
211. Research the dragon you're after; know whether its breath weapon is a cone or a line and adjust party formation as necessary.

(Feats and classes listed are from Draconicom, except for Vassal, which is from Book of Exalted Deeds. Enhancements can be found in Magic Item Compendium)

Blindfold them all and send them blindly into the dragons lair, when they find out there is a dragon they will flee, the dragon will follow.. (Free Food :D) You on the other hand, sneak in and loot while the dragon is eating the hirelings.

P.S. No matter how much you try to gain hirelings, you wont be able to, do you remember your knight commander telling you not to tell anyone? :D
