Doesn't that seem a little stupid?

Er, what? Damage Reduction applies against physical attacks - bludgeoning, slashing, piercing. Energy Resistance applies against energy attacks - fire, cold, acid, electric, sonic. They don't apply against the same things.

it does stack,

Example: Bob has DR 5 / cold iron and Energy resistance fire 5

Frank hits Bob with his flaming rapier for 1d6+3 + 1d6 fire and rolls (4)+3 + (2)= 7 normal and 2 fire. Bob takes 2 points of damage.

I wouldn't necessarily call it stacking if they are each blocking different sources of damage. But it's effectively similar anyways. I suppose it would work the same way for a kelgore's firebolt spell.

I may be mistaken but I thought DR didn't reduce energy damage (even from weapons)?

It doesn't. The DR blocks the weapon damage, the resistance blocks the energy damage, it just happens to sort of look like stacking if the weapon happens to do both sorts of damage, but isn't really stacking.

Yea it isn't really stacking more like complimenting each other.

I wonder myself why oranges don't stack with apples. Couldn't get a good explanation, sounds stupid.

That is because if you buy them in a store their prices do stack
