hey guys,

i ve some questions:

(lvl4/wizard)

1. My DM says that because i ve 18 int, i ve 1 additional spells/day. is this a special gesture for me, or is there really sometin like that in a book.

2. does checks while sleeping (fortitude, will, etc.) wake PCs?

3. casting in melee combat causes atack of op. can i prevent this by just sayin "im casting defensively"?

thx in advance

Might wanna check out the Questions by RAW thread. For now-wise...

1. You do gain bonus spells for a high Int if you're a Wizard. It's in the Player's Handbook, albeit in a weird spot - I think it's in the section about abilities.

2. I imagine it depends on what the save is for. If it's a spell that you don't get to know you saved or failed for, I'd say you wouldn't wake up. I suspect that taking damage is an automatic awaken. Dunno whether there's actual rules for it.

3. If you want to cast defensively (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/castingSpells.htm), you have to do a Concentration check DC 15+spell level.

1. Yes, this is in the rules. Right here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#abilitiesAndSpellcasters). More specifically, you get 1 extra spell per day of each level 1 through 4. You can't actually use the bonus 3rd and 4th level slots yet because you're not high enough level, but you get the bonus for both 1st and 2nd level spells per day. If your intelligence increased to 20, you'd get a bonus 5th level spell slot (not usable yet) and also a second bonus 1st level spell.

2. A successful Listen (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/listen.htm) check (which takes a -10 penalty for being asleep) wakes you up. I don't think there are many specific rules for what else does or does not wake someone up.

3. Yes, but declaring that you are casting defensively also means you have to make a Concentration (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/concentration.htm) check. If that check fails, you still don't provoke an attack of opportunity but your spell fails, the power spent to no effect.

For questions this simple and straightforward about the rules, the best place to post them is Simple Q&A D&D 3.5 (by RAW) (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184173).

Here's the SRD on it if you don't have your book available. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#abilityModifiers)

Applies for other spellcasting classes as well (not just wizards) with different ability based on class.

Granted, I didn't look very hard... but still!

1. you do indeed get a bonus
use it wisely
2. depends on the check/situation, sometimes you even get a penalty for sleeping
3, DC 15+spell level is needed for this
2 solution to that
1, stay at the back of the party
or
2 invest a lot of points in const
