Still. More accurate graphs would probably not be forum appropriate.

The UK and a lot of other countries in Europe us dd/mm/yy rather then mm/dd/yy, so it's 14/03 for us, rather then 03/14.

Ah, I see. The pedant in me likes that numbering system, since it's least to most. But it seems like you guys don't have a pi day, since there's no fourteenth month! :smalleek:

If there was an April 31st they could. Too bad.

Although Pi day is also celebrated on November 10 by some people for being the 314th. day of the year. Nov, 9 in leap years. :smalltongue:

See, I prefer it, because a date that I'd pronounce "The 14th of March" is written 14/03. Nice and simple.

I prefer it, too. But people here (Mexico) don't really have a set way to write it. It usually varies.

But pi is not equal to 22/7.

π = 3.141592654...
22/7 = 3.142857143...

The underlined parts are not the same.

Hm, it seems that GiantITP does not like my use of the pi symbol. And by the way, Dire Moose, I gave pi to a trillion digits. I win. :smallamused:

However!
a) 3/14 is only pi to two decimal places, and 22/7 is correctly pi to the second decimal place
b) 22/7 has HISTORY m'boy!

Doesn't beat the time we took yams and potatoes, and cut them into little squares for Square Root day...

I was reading about that on CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/innovation/03/14/pi.tau.math/index.html). Now, I'm not terrible with numbers, but when you get into calculus and trigonometry and irrational numbers my brain goes into sleep mode. Can someone explain to me in layman's terms what the difference is?

pi is pi.
tau would be 2 times pi.
pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
tau would be the ratio of the radius of a circle to its diameter.

some say this would make trigonometry easier to understand, for the reasons detailed in the video I linked. you see 2*pi used often enough in math that replacing it with another constant might seem more convenient.

3.14 = 3.14000...
π = 3.14159...
22/7 = 3.14285...

22/7 is a closer approximation of pi than 3.14, since
285-159 < 159 - 000

In Greek it's pronounced [ˈpi], in English [ˈpaɪ], is what I meant. German follows the Greek pronunciation on this one.

well, would you find it easier to describe a full circle, that is 360 degrees, as 2*pi radians or as tau radians?
is it easier to think of a quarter of a circle as being an angle of pi/2 radians or as being an angle of tau/4 radians?
Which is easier to interpret as being half of a circle, pi or tau/2?

that's really what it boils down to, I think, some people apparently do not like one circle being 2 pi radians.
