What are some good, low-level ways to get extra land speed? Either in combat, or for traveling.

Working on a fairly wide-spanning organization made up of adherents of the gameworld's God of Travel, and I'd like them all to live up to it.

Monk 3 gives +10, increases with more levels
Barb 1 gives +10
Celerity Cleric domain (also/or Pathfinder's Travel Domain)
I'm pretty sure there is a Ranger ACF that can do it

Oh, and don't be "small"

get something smaller to ride you and make DC 15 checks. then you can get +10' every other turn for 1 hp, or doubling each consecutive turn.

ed: it's not base, ofc. very little affects base. try the quick trait, dark template (LA +1), and the wild-ish template in dragon 306.

also, if you don't mind that it's fly, unseelie fey doubles speed.

Character concept: Highest base speed at lowest level

ECL 2: Dark Xeph Cleric 1

Domain: Clerity

Trait: Quick

Base speed: 60 feet. 70 if in need of actual flight.

Better yet, have them ride something. Horses are good for this, and so are abilities that summon them. Of particular note is the Phantom Steed (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/phantomSteed.htm) spell. They probably won't have the caster level to make it fly (14th) but they can certainly use it to move very fast, and take Knight Phantom (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050706a&page=4) levels, a class that specializes in the spell and doubles-up on CL growth for it. It loses them two spellcasting levels though so they'd still only get it flying by like 12th level or something.

If Dreamscarred Press is on the table, there's a feat for Xephs in Races of the Mind:Xeph called Long Distance. Basically (and assuming I remember correctly), your burst racial ability lasts until you take a non-free action other than moving. Combine with Speed of Thought, Xeph Paragon (burst faster), Dark template, and Quick trait, and you'll have some seriously fast long-distance runners.

The usual suspects for fast movement- Barbarian, Monk, Ranger (with ACF)- are always helpful. In the lesser-known categories, Blade Dancer PrC from Oriental Adventures increases your base speed rather than granting a bonus, and Alacris is a Xeph PrC from Races of the Mind:Xeph that grants a decent amount of fast movement.

Once you get to a certain point, percentage increases become enormously valuable. Shadow template gives 150% for +2, Unseelie Fey (as mentioned) gives fly at double land for +0, the Run feat makes running speed*5 instead of *4, and I'm sure there are others.

Let's see what we can do with this:
Base race: Xeph (30'; burst for +30', assuming we get to level 9 [we will])
Lawful alignment.
Two flaws.
Quick trait (base speed 40')
Shadow Template (+2 LA, speed +50%, bought off at levels 6 and 9)
Unseelie Fey (fly at 2x land, not calculated until end)
Level 1: Barbarian 1 (speed 40*1.5=60'+10', burst +30')
Feat: Speed of Thought (speed 40*1.5=60'+20', burst +30')
Feat: Run (run for x5)
Feat: Dash (speed 40*1.5=60'+25', burst +30')
Level 2-4: Xeph Paragon (speed 40*1.5=60'+25', burst +50')
Feat: Long Distance (burst lasts indefinitely as long as movement continues)
Level 5-7: Cobra Strike Monk 3 (speed 40*1.5=60'+35', burst +50')
Feat: Dodge
Feat: Mobility
Feat: Spring Attack
Level 8: Ranger with Fast Movement ACF (speed 40*1.5=60+45', burst +50'
Level 9-10: Alacris 2 (speed 40*1.5=60+55', burst +50')
Feat: Improved Speed (burst improves +10' each at lv. 13, 17)
Levels 11-20: Blade Dancer 10 (speed 120*1.5=180'+55', burst +70')
Dark template (from continuous collar of umbral metamorphosis)

...and dangit, I need to run before I can figure out exactly what speed that works out to. Urgh. Anyhow, it should be something to play with.

You could refluff the Fast Leg graft in Fiend Folio. The speed boost is untyped, so you could get 2 Fast Legs for 8k and get +20 speed. Without refluffing you'd need to be evil for it to work well.

Dash (feat) + 5
Fleet of Foot (regional feat from Forgotten Realms) +10
Travel Devotion (feat) 1/day move your speed as a swift action

The 3 Guardians of the Green PrCs in Complete Champ all have a Untyped speed boost if you already have a existing version of the granted ability (Barb Fast move and Woodland stride)

Oh, and don't be "small"

Same source, doesn't stack.

There's a feat in Complete Warrior (I think) called Divine Vigour, and it gives you a +10 foot bonus to speed and 2 temp hp per level at the cost of burning one turn attempt.

Or a Goblin :smallwink:

Anyway, isn't the greatest problem with increasing speed, that almost everything gives the same type of speed bonus?
I believe the Dervish PrC also gives a speed bonus.
