All of you have received a summons from your high priestess, bringing you to a meeting. The unusual thing about this meeting is that it does not take place in your high temple, rather a place that you have never seen before. As you enter the temple, you see other members of your faith, all of them who you know. However, much to your surprise, you see a large number of other people entering (10), whom you do not know, but by the symbols on their robes, it is easy to discern that they belong to the faiths most commonly thought of as “allies” to yours. As you move slowly into the room, you see that there no pews in the temple, rather just a raised dais. Around the dais, in such a way that none of them are given prominence, are the statues of your respective deities, Tishtina, Sabrina and Nocticula.

You wait, and moments later, a woman enters, and steps onto the dais. Those who are of the faith of Tishtina recognize her immediately as Casandra Sontin, High Priestess of Tishtina. The rest of you take a few moments longer, but you as well can see it.

Casandra Sontin
There are many beautiful women in Daystor, and if you asked a hundred men to compile their list of the Top 10, you would get a hundred different lists....from position 10 to 2. And then there is Casandra Sontin. The beautiful queen of the amazons is hands down #1, and nobody even bothers to dispute to it, not that she even makes the claim. She rules both the amazons and the religion of Tishtina, as has always been the case since Tishtina’s ascension, from her home city deep in the heart of Amazonia, the incomparable City of Gardens, a place of absolute peace and serenity.

Moments later, another woman joins her on the dais, those of Nocticula know her as Dalcar Sontin, High Priestess of their religion, and those who are not shortly figure it out.

Dalcar Sontin
When you look at Dalcar Sontin, you would swear that you are looking at a woman who is no more than 23 or 24 at the most, yet you know she has ruled the religion of Nocticula for longer than any of you have lived. A LOT longer. And even more impressive than her beauty is what she has done for the religion.
When she first pried the sceptre of Nocticula from the cold, dead fingers of her predecessor (in a battle where she kept her under a total charm, even while carving her up like a roast with her blade), Nocticula was a minor demon queen, not even in full control of her own plane. In the ever changing battlefield of demon queens attempting to overthrow Malcanthet as queen of the succubi, you could not have gotten odds from the oddsmakers of Kroy that she would do it. Now she is most powerful demon in the Abyss, one to whom even titans such as Orcus, Grazzt and even Demogorgon bend a knee, while Malcanthet no longer even exists.

And before you have time to even think of asking a question, a third woman approaches the stand. Unlike the other two, she is an elf, and those of Sabrina know she is Zanthia Bindar, their High Priestess.

Zanthia Bindar
An elven woman, running a brothel. The absurdity of that statement is almost impossible to fathom, yet not only is Zanthia Bindar the madam of the most exclusive brothel in the whole world, The Golden Rose, she happens to the queen of an entire religion devoted to that practice. And with a labyrinthine maze of subsidiaries, other ventures such as casinos, and front corporations, no one could even venture a guess as to how much money they take in on a world wide basis.

Casandra is the first to speak, her voice is soft and sweet, yet you can hear it with ease.
You are probably wondering why you are here and more importantly, why you are here with members of a faith that while friendly to us, is still not ours. We have all summoned you here, you are to represent our tri-faiths in the Cup of the Gods.

Dalcar takes over, her voice seductive and alluring, her words alone are enough to make you want to do whatever she requests.
The Cup of the Gods is now upon us once again. For the past five competitions, other faiths have challenged the old alliance system, giving them unparalleled success. Now, we are out to totally rewrite the rules, and the level of success, not only will each faith compete with all their members, all the faiths will co-operate. Fully.

Zanthia is the last to speak, her musical elven voice makes it hard to concentrate on her words, just listening to the sound is reward enough.
Several days ago, all of us received the same parchment. Only two lines of the parchment can be made out, but there are many more. No manner ofmagical divination can reveal them. But the first two lines are clear enough
“Find them all
Divide the haul”

Casandra takes over once again.
With The Cup upon us once again, and all faiths receiving the same message, we put the pieces together, and this is where we stand now.

Madame Dulcinea

A statuesque woman dressed in a slinky black dress, hair seemingly tossed by the wind stands with 4 others, an elaborate holy symbol of Noticula hanging from her neck. Clearly, a cleric of Noticula.

Another woman, seemingly identical to her, stands beside her relaxed, her only differentiating point being her disconcerting, glowing red eyes to the former's black and a lack of the holy symbol.

The cleric speaks, "Esteemed High Priestesses, I am honoured to have been chosen for this task. But do pray tell us, what is the Cup and what are we expected to do?"

Peridot

An oddball group of four people have entered together, and stand a bit apart, evaluating the other servants.

Standing front and centre is a tall amazonian woman, blonde and muscular, dressed in a shirt and skirt of mail that doesn't quite conceal the interesting parts. A massive sword dangles down her back, and she stands listening, hands on hips.

Behind her is a burly middle-aged man with greasy hair and a pock-marked face. He is dressed in loose brown clothes, and has an arm wrapped protectively around the legs of a half-sized woman perched on his left shoulder. The woman is squat and nondescript, except for her iridescent eyes and short stature. A teal cloak is held together by a brassy holy symbol of Sabrina Keldith.

Tugging at the brutish man's other hand is a young girl, perhaps six, with sandy hair in pigtails, a wide smile, and a cheerful blue-and-white checked dress. The girl seems to be taking in everything that's being said, but simply beams on.

The tall blonde woman takes a step forward and raises a fist.

"Sounds like fun. We're in."

Taleira Ulharvyth

"I'm going to guess that there's something to winning the Cup of the Gods beyond just bragging rights. Care to enlighten me? For that matter, care to give me any kind of clue what the Cup entails?" This question, delivered in a mildly challenging tone, comes from a woman on the left side of the group.

Taleira is just over average height, with blue eyes, red hair, and an athletic build. She's probably in the lower half of the group if they were ranked by attractiveness, though that's hardly an insult given the company. She wears an embroidered blue silk mantle over a black tunic and pants, contrasted by a gold sash. She is armed with a long, curved sword slung across her back and a dagger at her hip.

(OOC: I'm operating under the assumption the Cup isn't common knowledge, since it wasn't mentioned before.)

Szer Elem

The young elven woman with the golden brown skin standing at the back seems to be somewhat out of place among all the beauty present. Her bright red hair is cut short and her green eyes are cast down, flickering from woman to woman, clearly nervous. Her well defined muscles, broad shoulders and slim hips hint at a body in peak condition. The dark green leathers she wears are well worn and well maintained, but clearly not new. In her hands she holds a bow that looks too massive for her to use. A quiver rides high on her back and a slim dagger can be seen in her belt. Her wings - mixed white, brown and black feathers - are folded behind her back.

Sasha Belvedere

A young human woman walked in with dyed purple hair and wearing clothes that didn't cover much of her body. After all Sasha always been a big fan of moving around without anything encumbering her. Her golden cloak like feathers is hard to miss.

She crossed her arms while listening to what the priestesses had to say while she was assessing who was present at the moment. She had seen before and from what she could tell, they were all the big shots.

She punched her fist into the palm of her other hand like some form of martial salute while giving a mile wide smile.

"It sounds simple enough gathers as many pieces as we can."

Leanne shuffles in, a tall pale dark-haired woman, looking rather disheveled. Her dress is torn and stained, her hair uncombed. A look of preoccupation is upon her face, like she really isn't there. Her ears perk up at the mention of the challenge, and abruptly, her hair is combed, her dress is splendid, and her eyes gleam with focus.

They want something She murmurs

Leanne's brows furrow as she concentrates, recalling what she can of the Cup of the Gods.

What did it mean that the Goddesses had chosen to have us competing as one tri-faith? Not three faiths?

Time to find out. Time, as always, to put on a performance. But this was going to be a tough crowd. Few men, for one thing. But these weren't the usual sort of clientele, either. You don't play a player, and the room was presumably full of them.

"Find them all, divide the haul..." a woman who had been standing by Sabrina's statue repeated, just loudly enough for everyone to hear but not to project, stepping forth one stride and closing her feet. She was in her prime between youth and age. Her dark brown hair fell in curls over sun-tanned skin and she was dressed in a simple yellow tunic over a frilled brown skirt and wore solid leather sandals.

Raising her eyes, she cast an ambitious glance about the hall. "...Is that all?" She raised her left hand to take the floor. "Who else got this little memorandum? There are...how many what...thirty or so major churches who might be participating in this competition? And about twenty of us in the room right now?" She posed confidently. "Between the lot of us we should be able to wheedle those parchments out in two weeks." Now looking at Sasha, "I say let's each pick our prey and go! Scoop up the easy ones first, we'll crack the hard ones together."

The Cup of the Gods is hundreds of years old, and is held every 10 years. Adventurers go into a dungeon and attempt to retrieve as many Cups as they can, dodging the other Cup seekers and monsters in the process. At the end, they present them to their goddess. No one knows what the Cups mean, theories range all the way from they grant great power to the deities, down to the most cynical who say they are just another one of the gods jokes on humanity and are only good for the gods to harass each other, saying look how many more Cups my worshippers got than yours. The truth lies somewhere between, no doubt.

The competition was always every person for themselves, however about 10 competitions ago, things changed. A worshipper of Michael Bindar and one of Silescia Domar formed an alliance, and managed to nab 5 cups to split between their two allied deities. Then in the next competition, alliances were formed all over the place.

The next change came when Syndra rigged the selection process to let 4 of her worshipppers in, and they cleaned up. Two competitions later, the selection process was gone, anyone who was picked by their gods could go, and any alliance at all was allowed. Naturally, we stayed above this, knowing it was not in the proper spirit of the game, but that changed in the last one.

A ridiculous alliance was formed between followers of Melias, Morgaz and Rohdan, and not only did they boast they would set a record, they particularily said they were going to show up us. Our faiths have never gotten along, but not only was this a challenge to us....but then in the competition, they somehow killed all three of our followers who were in there, they killed them in such a way that they could not be resurrected. Normally, anyone killed in the dungeon is just eliminated from it, but these followers had their bodies destroyed, and their souls can never leave the goddess plane. When they came out with 6 Cups, they let everyone know about it

Naturally, we were outraged, and vowed to make a change for the next competition, entering the best teams we each could find. But the arrival of this note, has ramped up the importance. We have decided to join forces, and set a record that no one can touch

We want you to go in, and come out with all 10 Cups.

Arcaneus

"Sounds like a fantastic challenge!" Says Arcaneus Fallowip, stepping forward from among the ranks of Sabrina's followers. He is dressed in a gold-embroidered green tunic that he wears over his silver mithral shirt and black trousers. On his back is a golden hilted two-bladed sword, the blades of which appear to be made out of yellow light. His long brown hair is pulled back in a ponytail. His striking elven features complement the apparent litheness of his step. "For those of you not acquainted with me personally, I am Arcaneus Fallowip, Monster Hunter Extraordinaire. And a dungeon challenge is right up my alley. Pray, do tell, what sort of foul beasts lurk in this dungeon?"

Lystara

Amongst the crowd, along with the other followers of the good goddess, was a young woman in glamered armor. Through True seeing eyes it's a mithral suit of full plate, designed perhaps for someone of a larger frame before being modified. Without them though, it appears as lightly armored, form fitting, common clothing. With long brown hair and a light, clean complexion (likely a common trait in this crowd) she watches on with a puzzled look. Why just these three faiths then...

She stands with a shield strapped at her back, and a large sword before her. She holds it with its tip on the ground, her hands across the grip. It's almost as tall as she is, if counted from the end of the blade to the tip of the pommel.

Given the nature of the meeting, the design on the shield and sword stand out. In both Tishtina's imagery is present, yes, but when looked at carefully, one can see Duran's symbol edged at the shield's rim. Similarly, in her sword's handle, presented alongside Tishtina's, one can see Lysindra's symbol.

For now, she said little, merely pondered the point of a contest between the gods... Better this then open warfare, but one to allow followers of Morgaz... and to allow something like the events of the past contest... That couldn't stand.

Pauline Blackstone

A beautiful young woman with extremely dark hair with her hands clasped together watches and listens intently

Thoughts
I'm feel nervous, but a bit excited *breathe*. If I could meet my goddess in person I am sure I all of my questions will be answered
Pauline retrieves her silver holy symbol from her charcoal black robe (which has crimson runes) and squeezes it in her hands

My thoughts
I will physically describe Pauline later and bit by bit for when the physical descriptions become relevant since I don't want to cram too many details at once
As always thank you for your time

Unfortunately, we cannot tell you what manner of beasts are in there. A memory charm works on anyone who enters the tests, all they know when they come out, is how many Cups they have. No one seems to know what the dungeon is like. About all you know is that there will be other teams going against you, as far as we can figure out, there will be at least 3 of them. And before you ask, we only have one idea of what sort of team of adventurers are in those groups.

She shrugs, and smiles. This did sound like fun.

Elisa

Elisa was undeniably beautiful. The reasons she had remained the Erandol festhall's star attraction for a decade were writ clear for all to see. Her delicate features and porcelain skin were framed with silky long black hair. Her eyes were almost as dark as her hair, but they seemed to burn with an inner light.
Yet there is no denying the cruel treachery of gravity and the unavoidable passage of years. It is barely noticeable, the slightest hint of lines beneath her eyes, a slight sagging. Both however are expertly disguised by expensive make-up and black silk dress that lifted, firmed and exposed all the right places. Her magical garment had other forms but two were inappropriate for present company for vastly different reasons.
She regarded the others quietly with the studied eye of one who had spent her entire life evaluating people at a glance. As thief, Courtesan and High Priestess she had always needed to gauge people in seconds. The illusion of control that came with such evaluations lasted until Dalcar Sontin mounted the dais. At that moment Elisa resolved to stay quiet until everyone's cards were on the table.
She couldn't help but shake her head when she heard of the other god's boasting. Men and their games. Odd company Melias is keeping these days... What could such grim company offer in comparison to the Three?
Still, she had to admit she was liking the idea of a little competition. Maybe the rigid formula of her new role left her looking nostalgically at the excitement of her earlier lives or maybe the insult to her goddess had struck deeper than she cared to admit even to herself. She was resolved. There was no need to say anything. She could not disobey the word of Zanthia Bindar, it was happy coincidence that her duties now coincided with her desires.
She nodded quietly at Peridot's question said nothing, awaiting answer.

Mistress Bindar, do we have any clue of what this "haul" is they refer to? It sounds as if no prize was given in any of the other competitions, also, what of the other lines? I assume our acolytes have worked hard to decipher them, and I assume Sabrina herself has remained silent on this issue.

The competition is in two days, we will, of course, teleport you there. You may only leave the dungeon once. At that point, your game is over. Part of the challenge of the test is being able to hold onto the Cups once you have them

The haul is the Cups. Hopefully, you get all 10, and then exit the dungeon. At that point, we divide the Cups, 3 to each goddess. The last one, well, we'll figure something out.
As for the other lines, nothing we have used on them seems to work. For now, we have decided to let things play out, we know what the first lines mean.

A young girl has been unobtrusively waiting and watching as the others have stepped forward to speak. Although she too is blessed with beauty, she is undeniably young, perhaps yet to grow into her full potential.

Given her desire to remain unnoticed and the sheer beauty of those in whose company she now stands, it is perhaps understandable that some might be startled when she speaks up, her young voice almost lost in the noise of everyone else's questions .... almost. Or trapped their souls. Or something. No one knows, probably not even them, there's a memory charm, remember?" She paused to let the more disturbing part of that thought sink in. "If they can kill our own in such a way that they can't be raised, they can do it to others. I would suggest turning that power on the other teams, if we can. Let others exact our vengeance while we move to seize the cups. Consider for a moment what it is that we do. We seduce; we manipulate. Simple killing is easy, and a poor return for the crimes against us. How much sweeter to force the objects of our retribution to be the instruments of their own destruction?" There has been a figure that has been standing towards the back this whole time, dressed in black robe and veil-headdress (more like a noblewoman's veil, not a courtesan's veil). She pulls the veil from her face (but it is still on her head as is proper). Description Recap...She is a statuesque 6' 1", and weighing a slender (but shapely) 125 pounds. Her shape is well-proportioned and curvy, but not "hyper-feminine" to the point of obscenity in and of itself. She is elegant, almost aristocratic vice low-brow pornographic, and possessed of the charm more of a queen than a courtesan; Lildorrinene masters by words and will moreso than a waspish wasitline. She is very spare with her physical charms, whereas her sisters have trouble diving right into the physical aspects of seduction. It is this false prudishness that makes a target (man or woman, as preferred, as Lil can take on either form) yearn for her so much more desperately. As a corruptor, she is quite adept at using this effect and her patience to ensnare bigger targets than other succubi.

Her hair is sable black, is quite luxurious and full, and as straight, wavy, or curled as she seems suited to fix it. Her eyes are austere and azure blue, far less inviting than her kind, and far more alluring in their own way as a result.

Continuing her break from succubal 'tradition' (which, yes, does occur much more commonly in this chaotic, demonic subculture than popularly thought) is her clothing. Her kin are wont to show damn near everything they have. Lildorrinene, again owing to her uber-classy nature, has a stunningly beautiful black rope with silvered accents. The cuffs and edges (cleavage, back, legs) have diaphanous material, but the main is regal and beautiful and not translucent or anything of the kind. Her cleavage is hinted at, but the shape of the robe and the way she wears it providing far more mystery. She has sleek, black, velvety gloves that go up to just underneath the cuff of her robes, showing only the barest of skin at the upper arms.

At her sash is an inwardly curved blade (kukri) made of black material with a green gloss under candlelight. The pommel has a purple stone with a skull and crossbones in extremely small relief. If she pulls out the blade, the metal on the blade is the same blackness, but adorned with several gems - all of different colors, and all of the highest quality.
She speaks in a voice that somehow both purrs and commands in a manner that is almost godlike. [OOC: It's gauche to post numbers, but it is important for me to do so here so that some perspective can be gained. Her Charisma is 40.]

"For the sake of those here, you may call me Lildorrinene. Don't worry, true name research will show this to be a false name, but the one that has suited me for centuries, so you needn't waste your coin. I am a Mistress of the Witching Words and Winsome Wiles. Tricks and traps: physical and mental, are my specialty. Of course, as a worshipper of Nocticula," - and here she fingers a golden holy symbol around her neck with her long, velvety black gloves - "you can imagine what that means."

She looks up at Dalcar Sontin. "Your Most Exalted Excellency of the Midnight Kiss, I shall assist Madame Dulcinea here, (she signals to the latter) "whose knowledge and prowess and leadership - cool or fiercesome - are to be regarded above all. But I must ask, are we really to go into the tournament as a large group of 15? If it is for the best, then so be it.

"My next question ... is this Tournament held near a town or village or city in which many other contestants might be? Many great contests - such as the Enicom Races - host a heightened carnival atmosphere will celebrity-seekers the world around make a 'lay pilgrimage' to see heroes - if not in action, than at least in person. If this is the case, instead of the quarters you have excellently provided, I wish to go to this place and get a feel for things." Gather Information, Disguise, Spot, Listen ... the list to help with this goes on and on ...

Before both Dalcar and Zanthia leave, they gather their respective teams together and perform a short service of their goddess, invoking the deities blessing on you. no actual game benefit, just good wishes

In response to your questions, Casandra tells you
There is not believed to be a method of securingthe chests inside the dungeon. You just have to carry them around, and hope no one beats you. You cant leave to store them, its once out and done. Of course, for a single person, that might be an option, getting even one Cup is a matter of great pride.
As for going in as a large team, yes, that is our plan. We each were planning a team of our own, but then the parchment arrived. No one has ever gotten all 10 Cups, and then the statement to divide the haul seems to tell us that is what we must do.
And if you wish to go to the location beforehand, that can be arranged.

She quietly continues to mull over their faces until she suddenly looks up as Cassandra mentions the possibility of visiting the place beforehand, "I would be extremely interested in visiting the place beforehand ... preferably through the use of invisibility such that our opponents are unaware of such a visit if they happen to be watching."

Lia will prepare to spend most of the night on the town gathering information on whosoever might be entering the contest. With her ring, she has little need for sustenance or sleep, and thus she will make the most of all the time she has.

As the priestesses' briefing of sorts breaks up, the big amazon raises a hand.

"Any of you who are veteran spellcasters, who would like to discuss ways to use our magic tomorrow to help the entire group on the day after, come on over here an' we can chat."

She too listens for directions on getting to the site of the competition, and waits a few minutes, and handles introductions for any who choose to gather, before getting down to brass tacks.

And the conversation about long-term buffs happens. See the OOC thread, anyone who'd care to contribute.

After the conversation wraps up, the four head off on their own for a while.

Dot will lay on invisibility for each of her menagerie and herself, then the four will teleport to the site of the competition. What they do there is sort of dependent on what they find:

Are there guards - magical or literal - at the entrance to the site of the test?
Is it underground? A big building? A forest? An extraplanar portal?
What does she find out by examining the entrance using Greater Arcane Sight? ie, are there any magics permeating the area of the test? Spellcraft [roll0]
Are there others scoping out the physical area? What do they look like? What kind of auras/power levels (see Greater Arcane Sight) is Dot picking up on them?
There may be further scouting, based on answers to the above.

The guards respond that the rules of the competition are simple, enter, collect Cups, leave.
Any and all equipment is permitted, however, cohorts or similar are not. The test is for you, not for your assistants.
There is no restriction on spells that can be cast before or during, however since Find the Path refers to a locale and not an object, it will not be useful in the dungeon.
Any individual can leave at any time, with or without a Cup, and it can be singly or in a team. All that someone has to do to leave is to verbally or mentally express his desire to leave. When all the teams have left the dungeon, with Cups claimed or unclaimed, the competition is over.
The test takes place in a dungeon like setting.

The rules on sending representatives has changed, and now there are no restrictions on how many people may enter the dungeon. Of course, its known to be quite dangerous and highly competitive, which tends to keep the riff-raff out.
As for cohorts, its quite simple. You, and you alone may enter. No cohorts, no companions, no nothing. And you will find that any summonings you attempt in there will fail.

LILDORRINENE

[OOC: The player is demoralized at having lost a big post last night with a) spell tactics and list, and b) intentions for recon. The following is a flavorless recap ... see OOC for spell list.]

Lildorrinene will travel with the group that goes for pre-recon, but will then split off. Additional data she mentions is that two other gifts given to her are telepathy (100', good for party co-ordination), a polyglot ability allowing her to speak with any sentient, and the ability to change shape into any Humanoid of Medium or smaller size (yes, any gender).

As a cap to her giving intel on herself, she adds, "Now, while I have the full gamut of a beguiler's illusions - which I have, of course, used in my time - my real specialty is the aspect of enchantments. *laughs mildly* I know that everyone here is willing to say the same. My dossiers are such that I can tell just from your manners of speech that while none of you possess my pure will in ruling and persuading others, still you have magics to help you overcome that with foci on negotiations, subterfuges, and the like.

"However, my own power is such that while I may not be the very best at any one of these things effectually - given your use of magic in mundane situations - none of you can compare to the ability of my magics to batter down even the strongest of minds. Too, unless you have spent your life studying two approaches to magics - as many of you no doubt have - I have vastly more mana available for overall spellpower. Combined with my focused skills on feints and subtle manipulations, I am even more expert at the same and even at overcoming inherent magical resistances.

"I do not say this simply out of vanity. I say this as a statement of tactical fact. If there is a beguiler or a mindbender or any other similar enchanter among you, recognize that I possess powerful inexhaustible magics backed by an almost equally full reserve of magics, compounded by an unearthly will. So, if there is a 'top mind' that needs to be subverted ... or imploded ... I am best served in that capacity, and the rest of you (minus one or two backup) are for the rest of them.

"Physically, however, all of this spell and personal power comes at a cost. I have some rudimentary training in a deceptive martial art that I use more for defense. My skills at magical subterfuge are nearly backed up by my more physical and mechanical skills: safecracking, trap detection and disabling, and the like. Still, it is laughable to imagine me standing toe-to-talon with any physically capable creature. I imagine that my stamina is not nearly the same as anyone else's here.

"I advanced far beyond my sisters because instead of a mere manipulator, I was a full-fledged ...... strategist. However, this group's mission and size and composition are something to which I am not used to dealing. As such, I shall be the advisory position to Madame Dulcinea, whom I put forth as overall leader. I also put forth Peridot, based on her keen tactical knowledge, as a tactical advisory. I shall be primarily focused on physical and political infiltrations."

"Listen, Ark, I'm going to go with Lil...what's her name...Lildorrinene to the competition site to gather some rumors, and I think Peridot's going too, so I wanted to leave a message with you," She smiled her best. Arcaneus had seen better, even from Melinda herself. "I understand this may be a big favor upon you to ask."

"Ten cups. Three goddesses. The Queen's here right now, so I'll ask her myself, but I don't plan to be here when the other two are having their rotations. What I'm asking you to do is to ask the other two, when they're away from the others," and she glanced over her shoulder left and right, "as competitors, for we all have a right to know as our faiths' chosen champions, what their plan is for the last Cup if and when we get it." Lildorrinene

The competition site. She comes in with Aunt Melina, Peridot, and any other pre-facers to the party. She simply looks at the others and says, “Love, leisure, and luck to all.”

From her previous glance of the Melias/Morgaz/Rohdan champions, she has a pretty solid idea of what type of knuckleheads she’s likely to encounter. Her form is that of a dark-skinned, exotic “party-trailer,” one of those women whom, like peddlers, shows up to get the best markup on her wares. She goes to find the M/M/R camp, as that group is likely to be an earnestly hell-raising group. She will appear slightly ‘inebriated.’ Her apparent beauty will be marked down to a mere 16 Charisma’s worth … very beautiful, likely the best-looking from whatever village she came from … but not a pageant-winner. Perfect for someone who was beautiful … but not enough necessarily to land a husband with means and wealth … nor the apparent background to be combined into a ‘trophy wife’ … so the kind that had to turn to a living in which she had to sell her only apparent commodity. Oh, and yes, she will have the appropriately sized endowments for such a visceral bunch. She really doesn’t need a Disguise roll, since her role is generic and not specific to a person that might be beyond her normal means. If it matters, her Disguise is [roll0]. But, since that is a “basic, all-purpose” modifier, I expect that this most iconic type of role should get a pretty fantastic bonus. I mean, unlike doing a Disguise that is off the cuff, this specific type of role is one she’s perfected for the better part of three centuries.

Normally, she has Nystul’s magic aura running on her three magical items to make them seem non-magical. So, nothing but a potion should appear magical. It’s not unheard of for someone to pay for services in barterable items vice hard currency, and a potion is not very dangerous magic. The presence of low-level magic even should enhance her role, rather than detract from it. The same holds true for her gloves of dexterity +4 …. Part and parcel of her function as a rogue of her level (see below). Her kukri is concealed: Sleight of Hand [roll1].

She also normally has undetectable alignment running, but this is one time she doesn’t. Let someone read her alignment as chaotic evil – a thoroughly reprehensible gutterwench with a black heart – otherwise, true neutral might seem a little too detached.

She will seem to be someone who has ‘been around’ and is experienced at low-level cons and such – a low-level rogue. This is in line with a whore who has had to live by her wits. Otherwise, how does an “unmanaged” whore manage to brave the elements to find such a place for her business? I’m shooting for around 5th-level as a rogue … solid experience, but nothing at all threatening. Glibness will have been cast, so her Bluff in maintaining this ruse is [roll2]. See skill usages in Complete Adventurer for this.

Now, without specifics to run off of, I have to be generic here. I would hope you look at her intellect and fill in the holes that I cannot specify for this mission. Also, I (as a player) have only a fuzzy idea of how much time is allotted.

For rolls and functions not specified above, here we go ….

Appraise [roll3] and Sense Motive [roll4] … because knowing what people want, value, or protect is important.

Bluff … for the lies she tells. [roll5] Please note that her glibness being ineffective in zones of truth and the like is balanced by the caster needing to beat a DC of 30.

Bluff … for seduction; note that glibness does not apply to this. [roll6]

Diplomacy … not as important overall, but there are times when she might need above-board discussion and persuasion. [roll7]

Disguise for ‘supporting cast.’ The above is her primary form, however, she may have to change forms (and genders) as necessary to guide into more advantageous positions. Besides, unless she finds herself in a point of particular trust, folks are likely to tell different things to different people based on appearance, gender, background, and the like. Disguise [roll8] and Bluff (for changing around apparent ‘level of skill’ as appropriate) [roll9].

There might be times she has to do some old-fashioned skulking. Bluff (to create a diversion to hide) [roll10], Hide [roll11] and Move Silently [roll12]. She will use low or conflicting lighting and ambient noises to assist in this. If absolutely necessary, she will set up a silent/stilled major image to give her cover or distraction (and thus, hopefully, higher bonuses). She is fully aware that an equally capable group has good ‘hound dogs’ such as rangers or rogues or others with keen senses and will not overestimate them … thus she is careful as above. In the same vein, she doesn’t do anything as silly and ‘overt’ as cast invisibility or go ethereal, as the ability to pierce such illusions are relatively easy. Casting silence, however, is just fine.

If in the role of ‘supporting cast’ it becomes necessary to do a little shakedown action (obviously on someone that is not too tough or highly placed), old-fashioned Intimidation will help. [roll13]

A field agent might depend on an analyst for insight into information gleaned. However, having a body of lore to draw on will help in knowing which information might be of interest.
K: Arcana [roll14]
K: Engineering [roll15]
K: Local [roll16]
K: Nobility [roll17]
K: Planes [roll18]
K: Religion [roll19]
Spellcraft [roll20] … if she comes across a scroll, add +2 to decipher, but also she has read magic. Mundane wins, as she will absolutely attempt to downplay any spellcasting herself.

Spot [roll21] or Listen [roll22] to pick up anything of note. Also, Spot [roll23] or Listen [roll24] to determine if there are any trails on her (or to trail others) at a distance. As such, see things she will do above to make sure she breaks a tail. If absolutely necessary, break contact and change form. The spell mislead is also useful for break contact evasion.

Now, it is not her intention to go rooting around where she might get caught, but you never know what happens … Search [roll25], and add +2 if it relates to secret doors or stonework, Disable Device [roll26], and Open Lock [roll27].

Sense Motive. Different from determining valuations, this one is for piercing general Bluffs used against her. [roll28]
Sense Motive again, but for determing general worth of skill. [roll29]. Be sure to note that she will use her old-fashioned eyeball for seeing any obvious signs of capacity on someone, and then adjust the Sense Motive check as appropriate.

Sleight of Hand, specifically for keeping her spell component pouch concealed as such – again, usually as a finely accessorized purse. [roll30]
Sleight of Hand, as she might find the need to palm something of interest … or to frame someone to cause strife and discord in the ranks. [roll31]

Use Rope (w/ bindings) …. Not for any mission critical reason, but for fun. I mean, really … she does expect to get laid on this trip, or how can she say she is an ardent worshipper of Nocticula? [roll32]

Magics used ….

She will try to minimize magics, and yet she will liberally use detect thoughts. DC 27. However, assuming that she has ‘surprise’ as such and detect thoughts isn’t visible (as an SLA, she has to concentrate … but that doesn’t mean a stare-down) and she has Bluff [roll33] to feign (and does so as a swift action), she can pretty much bet on a DC of 29. Overcome SR = [roll34]

(Greater) arcane sight to help get a bead on power levels and abilities (see Sense Motive, above). Obviously, with the glowing blue eyes, this would only be done as 'supporting cast.'

(Greater) dispel magic, if necessary to drop something. Doubtful, but just in case. CL check [roll35]

(Mass) suggestion for a group of dolts, but a bad idea for major players. Only highly believable suggestions will do. Bluff[roll36] to feign. DC 31 (or 33 if feign successful). Overcome SR = [roll37].

Deep slumber might be useful for getting one of her ‘patrons’ to go to sleep (especially if they had been drinking, where the spell will be attributed to having passed out). I’ll let you figure out the details, but Bluff [roll38], swift action, to feign for +2 DC and +2 SR to caster level checks to overcome SR.

Clairaudience/ clairvoyance. Duh.

Nondetection will be used if it looks like my cover is blown wide open.

Charm Monster, but only on non-major players. Note that the charm lasts 15 days. Also, only the slightest twists will be used, nothing major. This will not be used on major-players, but those that can provide advantageous position. Prefer mundane tactics, but sometimes the strongarm has to work. Note that this is not a compulsion, so the charm is even effective in the radius of the many magic circle spells as it is not ‘active control.’ Bluff [roll39], swift action for surprise casting. DC 29, or 31 if feign successful. Caster level check [roll40], but reduce by 2 if feign unsuccessful.

Use any other spells that might seem necessary at the time, but otherwise her magic will be minimized.
Finally, after noting everything above in spoilers at her command, these are merely secondary means of the real meat and potatoes of what I’m doing. Note that skill ranks in Gather Information do NOT assume all of the above abilities, but basic intel gathering. As such, I’d like to hope that whatever this roll equals will be adjusted based on above successes.

Final Gather Information roll, before DM-granted bonuses (or, gods-forbid, penalties) … [roll41]

We could also cloak the suggestion effect itself from divinations. You find that there are four groups competing for the Cups, yours, the M/M/R group, a group of monks from both Varinn and Kiang, and a group of mages from Kotep. The monks are highly focused and very difficult to subvert with your type of blandishments. However, you do find a few "cracks in their armour" and from what you can tell, they are not a great threat to you and your team. They are not highly thought of.

The Kotep casters are a secretive bunch, no one knows much about them, and from what you can tell, they have not even arrived yet. Definately third runners as best you can make out.

As you expected, the MMR camp is easy to penetrate, and with what you offer, information flows easily. The MMR group contains no casters, divine or arcane, they are fighters, and in most cases the other side of their gestalt is rogue. Do not let these guys get sneak attacks on you, with their fighter training and backing, they would be devastating. Their leader is Kervin Bloodhawk and his #1 is Arius Pendwing. They are back to top their record, and when they learned that TS&N formed a team together, they were ecstatic at the chance to pound some more "stupid sluts". On the subject of the sisters that were lost at the last competition, you gain the following intel. The sisters have been banished by the use of a 'special sword', you were never able to actually see it, as it is their most preciously gaurded secret and item. You have never in your years of study heard of its like, but you do know that if you could get it from them, your sisters could be freed from whatever it is that prevents their resurrection.

I like your way of thinking. It does have a chance, you might want to give it a try. Im not sure what teams are going there, outside of the MMR group, so you might want to liaise with your team mates and see who might be your best targets for such a strategy

I would not underestimate the Monks, though they are not highly regarded, pride goeth before the fall, and their kind is especially dangerous to casters. Team MMR seems to be our main concern, and rightly so, their's is mundane might and trickery, and ours is largely magical. We must be very alert as their skills in stealth are to be assumed extraordinary, and any ambush could prove deadly before a single spell is case on our side. Still, their overconfidence is reassuring, and we should all do our best to reinforce this stupid stereotype of "stupid sluts", to lull them into a false sense of security, I also think we should obtain the sword, and our sister's rescue, it troubles me to think of our sisters lost in a limbo without the blessing of our Goddesses Light

The Day Before

A day before the competition is to commence, the rest of the party makes their way to the event grounds and city. There is a festival atmosphere, although it is not the greatest gathering in Daystor, seeing as almost all of the action will take place out of sight of the public. Still, celebrity seekers come to at least see part of history, if only second hand. Most of the crowd is also here to wager on the outcomes, and the bookies do a lot of business before hand
There are now 4 teams in the competition, a far cry from the old days, when everyone went in on their own. The lowest rank, according to the oddsmakers is the team of monks worshipping Varinn Cosar, and Kiang Dehn-Sin. In fact most people have begun to question how this group ever came together, while united by a common alignment, the two religions have never had anything to do with each other, and dont even reside in the same part of the world.
Next up is the team of casters from Kotep Arasin. The Kotep group was running second in the betting money, until the announcement of your team. That dropped them to third. However, Kotep boasts of some of the most powerful casters in the world, and their penchant for blasty, spectacular displays should not be discounted. The Kotep team seems to be a very secretive one, and rumours abound that they have not even arrived at the fairgrounds.
That leaves the team of Melias-Morgaz-Rohdan. While these cults never seemed to be particularly chummy before, this team seems to have managed to put those differences aside. The cults of Morgaz and Rohdan are known for their evil and destructiveness, and while Melias is not, they seem to have roped him in with promises of the beatdown that they inflicted on the followers of Tishtina, Sabrina and Nocticula the last time out. And if it worked once, why not again. Until the formation of your team, everyone thought this group would probably match or even beat their totals from the last time.
The arrival of your group has changed that dynamic, and now betting money is running 50/50. All of the members of your group, at least, the ones who appear in public and do not make any attempts to hide their allegiance are greeted with loud cheers and lots of well wishers. Of course, the happy go lucky followers of Tishtina get the most of this, but there are plenty of men who cheer on the followers of Sabrina and even Nocticula, probably due to the way their followers behave.
It is now approximately noon, the day before the contest is to begin. That will start mid-afternoon, of the next day. Your actions?

Szer Elem

Szer at first keeps stiff and cold but then warms to the embrace. A small smile lights her face as she returns the hug, taking care not to hurt Pauline.

"I have just returned from what was once my home and visits to the empty vale still depress me. It will pass, it always does, especially with friends around. How have you been? Long time..."

Pauline Blackstone

Pauline breaks the embrace and as always she is gleeful and seems to be dressed in a silk silvery robe her black hair has yet to be brushed, but give a pleasant smell. She looks at Szer with a exaggerated gaping frown as she brings her head back and paws at Szer's sleeve

As the group gathers to discuss strategy on the day before, the half-sized woman waits for her turn to speak. The small woman is sombre and businesslike.

"Listening to the gossip and betting going on last night, I can confirm that folk do indeed seem to be discounting the Varinn and Kiang team. While they may be fast and learned, the oddball team seem not to be drawing much favour among the bettors.

"The group of warriors and spies from the MMR coalition is neck and neck with us as front-runners. We have the advantage of numbers and subtlety, but none of us have been through this competition before, and who knows what they may remember, on re-entering the labyrinth. And yes, to confirm, the competition is set in a dungeon of some kind.

"A wildcard in this will be the Kotep casters. I hope that they will see the previous winners as the primary competition, but spells that protect us from energy attacks and other forms of damaging spells will serve us well.

I will suggest that we gather just after midnight to prepare for tomorrow. I have a number of spells prepared that will help protect us, from the defenses of the labyrinth, the blasts of the Kotep contingent, and the assorted blades, special and otherwise. It will take only a few minutes tonight for me to allocate out these protections, and if others wish to participate, I would consider them most welcome.

"From my conversation with the guards last night, I should warn all of you that companions, bindings, summons and familiars will not be able to come with you into the maze. Do not count on the ability to create aid. Similarly, Find the Path will be of no use to us inside, and I wouldn't hold your breath for other divinations."

For anyone who chooses to join in the midnight jam session spellcasting extravaganza, Peridot can provide the following:

Mage Armour, for anyone who wants it.
Ectoplasmic Armour (+9 armour bonus vs attacks from incorporeal opponents)
Superior Resistance (+6 resistance to saves)- I have 3 extra castings to offer - just include the claiming of one of them in a spoiler to your next IC post.
Mind Blank - I have 1 extra casting to offer - first claimed, first served
Phantom Steed - I'll be using one. If anyone else wants one, let me know.

On the day of the tournament, I'll provide Mass Resist Energy (Acid and Electricity, 30 points).

Aunt Melinda - perhaps sometime earlier

At an opportune moment on the way to dinner, Melinda pulled Arcaneus slightly aside.

What I'm asking you to do is to ask the other two, when they're away from the others," and she glanced over her shoulder left and right, "as competitors, for we all have a right to know as our faiths' chosen champions, what their plan is for the last Cup if and when we get it." Melinda's face went serious. "Will you do this for me? It may seem like a frivolous question to ask but I have a hunch it's going to be important."

"Very Well, Aunt Melinda. I'll do my best to see what they have to say. After all, I've got really nothing better to do until the competition starts."

Arcaneus walks in, chest puffed out, head held high, shortly after the other followers of Sabrina have arrived (those who wish to make there appearance known, that is.) He makes a grand entrance, with his large dire lion Ambis following close behind and shaking his mane. He receives a number of cheers and applause, as he is well-known for his ability to track and destroy powerful monsters. Hearing the applause, Arcaneus stops in his tracks, draws his brilliant energy double-bladed sword and preforms a martial dance to draw the attention of the crowd.

Preform (dance) check: [roll0]

In the midst of his dance, Arcaneus mutters a word in Sylvan and Ambis rears up on his hind legs and lets out a mighty roar. At that point, Arcaneus ends his dance and jumps up in the air onto Ambis's back.

He lands on Ambis gracefully and the Dire Lion falls down back onto all four paws. The crowd erupts in applause and Arcaneus rides Ambis into the camp, a wide smile on his face.

LILDORRINENE

To PeridotMage Armor/ Ectoplasmic Armor: The latter would provide some benefit against undead, but the former is useless given her own protections. The latter is particularly of note because on one hand 90% of her spells are useless against undead (enchantments and illusions are almost categorically ignored); the other 10% only make her or more capable in her uselessness. However, she has a weapon that is effective against undead, and is one of the few times she would be willing to go into melee against an opponent. Her martial arts makes her difficult to hit, but this spell would make her a great bane against undead, a truly unlikely front-liner to help buoy offensively more powerful - but otherwise easier to strike - fighters and clerics. Also, she does have a glass jaw.

Superior Resistance: Given her focus on the mental .... her true Achilles heel is being able to resist diseases and necromancies that try to overcome bodily defenses, so she would welcome this spell. The downside is that if you saw this problem as 'accounting' and 'bottom-line,' you would receive less on your 'investment' because ....

Mind Blank: Not necessary. She is extremely confident that her powerful magical resistance and nigh-impenetrable willpower makes her the last person on the team anyone will want to attack with a mind-affecting power.

Phantom Steed: No. Just, no. She is a high-powered operative of Nocticula. So just because she likes to "ride cowboy" does NOT mean she likes to ride horses (in any sense of the word). :sabine:

Mass Resist Energy: Acid is fine, as it is psychologically damaging and can make one sick. Electricity can make it difficult to move, but fire is pretty much as common as it gets. However, she does stress that perhaps sonic is better. Most people don't have sonic defense, and many casters like that one - if they have it - because of this. Worse, some sonic spells deafen affected targets. This is brutal for our team because we are made up of soooo many spellcasters.

I'm open to shifting electricity to sonic if that's preferred. Although I'll note that, for most that also do some kind of deafening/stunning, the secondary effects are not contingent on actually doing damage.

Lystara

"From my conversation with the guards last night, I should warn all of you that companions, bindings, summons and familiars will not be able to come with you into the maze. Do not count on the ability to create aid. Similarly, Find the Path will be of no use to us inside, and I wouldn't hold your breath for other divinations."

"So it'll just be us and the strength we carry... Alright, very well." Lystara, a young woman and divine champion of Tishtina, simply nods. She could offer some magic, but in truth, it was very limited. Mostly, she'd joined the gathering of mages to know who she would be going into the dungeon with and to stay informed.

In the initial gathering, she simply hadn't been too outspoken. This was a matter of pride in one's church. She had nothing against it, but she was not fond of the idea of going into the game set on killing others for this 'glory'. Likewise, the charms and enchantments being suggested may be efficient, yes, but... part of her felt that binding one to see your word as law was just as bad.

In the end, they were going into the unknown though. Whatever plans they made here would be useful, but with the representatives of 9 deities, order wouldn't last.

Regardless, she had taken up his mantle, and driven it further then he had thought possible. She was good, and she would only improve. None of them would fall in her watch... and neither would the fellow contestants. The ones responsible for sealing the competitors from the last cup away would pay for their sins... A champion of their god, one who has dedicated their life to her cause, deserved better.

For now, with a day before the competition, she calls up her mount and spends her time riding through the festival. She watches Arcaneus' performance with a smile, but soon goes on her way. After all, if she couldn't join her inside, then a day galloping through the plains was the least she could do for her. It probably wouldn't make much of a difference compared to what was already learned by the others, but she tries to get a feel of the gathering, and if possible, learn as much as she can about the events of the past contest. Ah, and get some diamond dust. It may be useful later.

Sorry about the general lack of posting, Lystara can't do much intel compared to the rest.

Dalcar gives the young girl a seductive look.

I like your way of thinking. It does have a chance, you might want to give it a try. Im not sure what teams are going there, outside of the MMR group, so you might want to liaise with your team mates and see who might be your best targets for such a strategyThe young girl nods her thanks to Dalcar and the heads back to where the rest of the group is quartered. Searching out Lildorrinene, Lia explains her idea to the somewhat 'older' beguiler.

(Note: If anyone else wants to be involved, feel free to 'listen in' IC)

Lia clears her throat and speaks, "Excuse me, I understand you carried out a reconnaissance of the Melias-Morgaz-Rohdan group earlier. I had an idea about limiting our opposition and getting our revenge at the same time. Basically, it requires that we approach each of the other competitors and implant a suggestion that as soon as the competition actually starts, they immediately say the words, I wish to leave. If we can pull it off, at least with the Melias-Morgaz-Rohdan group, then it ensures that they will not retrieve a single cup, making our task significantly easier. It would also give us the possibility to locate that sword you mentioned earlier."

She pauses a moment, "... and if we really want to drive the point home, we could open a bet directly with the Melias-Morgaz-Rohdan group that we get more cups than they do. I'm sure a suitable use could be found for the money and the fact that it would hurt their wallets would be icing of the cake for us."

Lia then awaits a response.

LILDORRINENE :sabine:

"Actually," says Lildorrinene says to Lia, "I had a similar idea. However, our ideas don't have to be mutually exclusive. We'll choose our targets separately, but to add divisiveness. I will look for one to target alone, if possible, in seduction. There, to hypnotize him such that he will steal a pouch or an item from a fellow (also specified, not random), a fellow that will be from a different religion. I am thinking of framing one of the ocean-worshippers, since they are already invited along for the ride."

When Taleira stops, the jeers become considerably muted, mostly from men in the back. Elisa

Elisa finally emerged from her room wearing a more relaxed costume of flowing blue and black.

http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/files/costumes/2500/21690/rinoa_2.jpg

'My brothers and sisters.' It is with truly no effort that she layered the two words with very different emotional contexts with subtle alternations of her voice. The former spoke of a warmth and unspoken bounds no man could understand, to the latter the inflexion hinted toward the bedchamber. Elisa was a woman for whom seduction once meant survival, a trait difficulty to forget within the chambers of her mind 'My apologies for my absence. I have been communing with the Goddess. She approached the group with a grace and subtle enticement that was once again not deliberate but bred deep into the bone. 'I have learnt all I care to learn of these... men She all puts spits the word 'Although that is using the term loosely. I have learnt all I care to about these men who have imprisoned our sisters. Apart from their leader and his second they are little more than intelligent beasts, although the fact I could not scry those two speaks of darker possibilities.
'But Sabrina has made certain things clear to me. Firstly I relay good news, for our sisters can be saved. Those two of darker potential know the means of freeing our sisters, something we will extract from them during the competition. Therefore it is important we take one of them 'alive' so to speak.
'Those two are not spellcasters despite my inability to scry them. If we had more time I would ascertain who was casting those spells and... approach them. But we do not. Those of Morgaz are most likely to betray the team, and it is to that we should turn our attention for the nonce.'

Ok, setting things up. I'd like to lay out the plan now so DM can veto any of it or if anyone wants to contribute. Firstly I'd like to combine disguise person, sending and demand to impersonate one of Elisa's clients, specifically one who can get a lot of booze sent to team Melias' leader. Message reads 'In celebration of your team's forthcoming victory I have opened my stockhouse. After the games please remember my fond wishes as you partake. More incoming.' The demand (Which I'm hoping he'll deliberately fail his save on :p) reads 'Tell your church it always have an ally in noble (X). I suggest you and your team partake as soon as you are able.' (the Italics denoting the actual suggestion. Obviously she'll then have to charm (By any means) the guy into doing it.
Anyone got any idea of how to leverage the Morgaz betrayal thing? Elisa can do a lot, but only if she's actually nearby to them.

We seem to have at least two separate plans going on here to disrupt the triple alliance team, but a very limited time to execute them. I'd like the group to pull together and settle on one of them, because trying to pull them both off might end up running you out of time, theres only one night left to go before the competition.
Elisa, your plan is sound in theory, but theres a problem and that is, you're in an area where the alcohol is limited. Teams basically brought their own alcohol, first of all because the amount of outside alcohol was likely to be limited....and secondly because these paranoid guys would suspect someone else of potentially poisoning a stash sent to them, because thats exactly what they would do.

"I am a predator", returns the telepathic reply, since the 'lines of communication have been opened, but she makes sure she includes Lia. "A warlord tries to smash his strongest neighbor. But a smart predator that wishes to cull a herd starts with the weaker and the stragglers, not with the largest bull."

Lildorrinene turns to Lia. "My dossiers tell me that you and I have training that is not to different, though you spent your early life developing certain 'special' skills in tandem with your magic. I am a good sleight of hand artist, but I am told that you are the non-pareil. If I point out two of their group, will you shadow and then pick one object from one and give it to the other?"

[Mikela, because we only have very limited info that our characters would otherwise have greater access to, at least sensorily, I am going to take a little license here. I hope it's generic enough not to take too may liberties. Otherwise, the back-and-forth of questions may take an excessive amount of time.]

"There is a particularly desperate one among them. *Name given* Where some might be rats, this one is a hyena. I don't doubt that he has a keen eye for survival, but I think he favors more the sword than the wit. There is an ocean worshipper. *Name given* Steal something that can be identifiable and from the latter, and secret it on the former or in his items. It must be valuable. I will try to get him to the side and enjoying some 'polite company.' This keeps him distracted for you. Go disguised just in case, as I have been.

"My reasoning is that these two are good muscle and skill, but not vital. The fact that the traditionally untrusted religions are working, no doubt, in a loose confederacy with the ocean worshippers. If the latter is offended, then by himself or with his fellows they may quit the scene - at least of their current companions. You just can't deal with thieves in your own party when you otherwise have to trust them with your life. Also, it may just be as simple as the hyena being killed or humiliated.

"Either way .... anyway. At the least, it sows the seeds of discord for later."
[OOC: The above was snipped from a 'private' conversation between Lildorrinene and Lia ... but reposted only to make it easier once they have caught up with the party. With nothing left to do in the evening, the group settles down for the night, however notable by their absence are Lil and Lia. Several hours later, both of them pop back into the room, wearing satisfied smirks on their faces. Faintly, in the distance, the party can hear sounds of some sort of a disturbance that might (or might not) be coming from the area that team MMR has claimed for themselves, but being the pure and innocent :smalltongue: group that you are, you would never go to investigate such things, or even have a hand in them.
The next day, Casandra, Zanthia, and Dalcar are waiting for you. Perhaps by co-incidence (or not), unlike when you first arrived at the temple, you are not separated into groups, but are scattered together, throughout the room. The three priestesses perform a ritual of blessing on you, each one of them is doing their own ceremony, yet they somehow seem to blend together seamlessly in a beautiful production. When they are done, you get a definite feeling that unlike other times when your goddess was watching you, you now know they are WATCHING you.
Just as the ceremony finishes, you hear the solemn ringing of a gong, and know that its the call for the test. You head out to the gathering grounds, crowds surrounding you, cheering you on, as you walk over. You enter into a grove, a man in a formal dress suit is waiting there, standing behind a table. There are 3 other teams that arrive as the same time as you.

Team M(m)R
The first of these teams is well known to all, the MMR team, however its composition has changed a bit. There are now only 10 members to it, and the only standards displayed are those of Rohdan and Morgaz, the ocean wave of Melias is notably by its absence. When they catch sight of you, their hooting, hollering and cat calls begin again. Two members, standing in the middle of the group do not seem to be participating, they seem to be strugging with a heavy item. The rest of the group eventually parts, and you can see the two of them are holding an impossibly large sword, theres no way it could be used in battle. A overhelming feeling of dread passes through you as you see the blade, you have never seen its like, but you know without a doubt, this is the item that has been used to banish your sisters. They gesture at it, and point at you.

Team Monk
The second team is a group of 8 monks, the fervour in their eyes speaks to the dedication they have to their cause, you doubt if they are even aware of you, or any of the other teams, so focused are they on the ceremony at hand. Their symbols, as you expected, are those of Varinn and Kiang, and while not as imposing as team M(m)R, their fervour and dedication might carry them even farther than the rag-tag ruffians that the other group is

Team Kotep
The last team is a group of 6 mages, robed as they are in the colours of Kotep, red and black. Just of the look of them speaks to their allegiance to evil, as they survey the other teams coldly and without emotion, stroking their black goatees as they do so. Their eyes wander over your group, completely without the emotion or leering that you are used to, that is, until they catch sight of Lystara, and her sword. Black looks of fury cross their faces at that time, as they nudge each other, and point at it, Lystara feels like a quarry that has been marked for the hunt

The three teams come to attention, some slower than others, and the man in the suit speaks.

Today, we begin the ancient test of the gods, known simply as the Cups of the Gods. We have 4 teams with us today, the team of Morgaz and Rohdan, the team of Kotep, the team of Varinn and Kiang, and the triple team of the goddesses of love.
The competition is simple, you will enter the demi-plane of the competition, and retrieve as many of these Cups as you can. As the man speaks the last, 10 Cups appear on the table before him. He holds up each one in turn, the Cups are crystal and golden, with mithral engravings on them. He gestures again, and the Cups disappear. There are no other rules to this competition, from this moment on, anything goes. Once in the demi plane, the contest begins. You may leave at any time, simply verbalize your desire to leave, and you will be gone, however once you leave, you cannot return. You can stay as long as you wish, re-learn spells as often as you want and heal as needed, however, the other teams might beat you to the Cups in that time.
Do any of you have any questions, before we begin?

LILDORRINENE

The stunningly beautiful and statuesque Lildorrinene steps forward regally when the men catcall and give their threaten with the sword. She knows that from this point, normal seductions are useless, so she lets them feel the sting a little ... by shifting through each form she used - each one waving or blowing kisses - ending, of course, with the damning one that got the Melias worshippers to quit the field. She then relaxes her form, bat wings growing from her back; a long, sinuous tail growing from behind her; and, very cute, little vestigial black horns poking just barely above her lustrous hair .... fully succubus in form. She then blows a kiss to them all. "I have just drawn their focus," she telepathizes to her sisters (and few brothers). [Which now shows her true form to her allies.]

She calls to them. "You see, boys? Abyss hath no greater fury than a female scorned. And your allies didn't even require the services of an artifact to be banished. Hey, wasn't there another Morgaz worshipper or two among you? What happend to them, I wonder. Hmmm ..."

Once the proctor finishes, she purrs, "Now, obviously I can leave at any time. But is there any restriction to using exceptional means to travel within the area ... such as using the Border, vice Deep, Ethereal - as long as it is to be coterminous with the Prime in the playing field for tactical options? I'm not 'leaving' if I do that, as I can still interact in a limited way (and, as such, be interacted with). But, I wanted to check to be sure. What about teleportation ... again, within the confines of the 'Playing Area'."

Melinda raises an impressed eyebrow, having finally put two and two together. "Nice work, you two," she compliments. That certainly wasn't the sort of thing I have the guts to pull off myself. Lil's head is definitely a good one to have on the team... she also needs to be watched...dear Goddess, what have I gotten myself into?

It really doesn't take much to see that Melinda wasn't the dungeon-crawling, tournament-winning sort of person at all. The mental preparation just isn't there. Those who know her know that while she is itinerant, and exceedingly well traveled for her age, and tireless as a missionary, she's not and has never been an adventurer. She sings about it plenty, but never was her own attachment to adventuring more than investigative. And when push comes to shove, the quasi-living dread oozing off of that vile sword still makes her shake, not so much out of fear as of sheer mental perturbation at the perversity of that object's history. Songs and verses were already forming in Melinda's head to describe it, and she really didn't need that right now.

Dot looked around at the much larger opponents, and the much, much larger swords. She glanced over at the mild-seeming holy warrior Lystara, wondering what she had done to earn the enmity of the wizards. And wondering if she'd be able to survive their onslaught long enough for the rest of their group to help, should the personal vendetta be pursued down below.

She looked around at the other teams. Well, if they were being so obliging as to stand around and let her analyze their preparations, so much the better. Dot wove one of her divinations, then pulled out a slate and jotted notes about the auras and abilities revealed on each of the opponents.

Dot is casting Arcane Sight and having a look around at each of their opponents. Spellcraft checks for the auras follow. Also taking notes about the results of the following aspect of the spell's divinations:
If you concentrate on a specific creature within 120 feet of you as a standard action, you can determine whether it has any spellcasting or spell-like abilities, whether these are arcane or divine (spell-like abilities register as arcane), and the strength of the most powerful spell or spell-like ability the creature currently has available for use.

Spellcraft checks as needed:

Yes, both teleport and using the ethereal plane are legal, as long as you do not exit the playing area. But be warned daughter of Nocticula, there are some places where your teleport will avail you naught.

And OOC, this is as good a time as any. You will find places in this dungeon where Cups are being held, behind force fields or whatever. If there is a riddle in the room, solving it is how you get at the Cup. You do not cast triple empowered, double maximized, super charged mega dispel everything at it.
It wont work.
Similarily, you might enter into a seemingly empty room, only to find it suddenly changes sizes, and you are surrounded by opponents. Do not bother pointing out to me that you had true sight activated.
It wont work.

Dot.
Your arcane sight reveals that none of the other teams have buffs active right now. The Morgaz-Rohdan team registers as advertized, absolutely no spell casters.
The Kotep team registers as wizards/clerics. All of them the same.
The Varinn-Kiang team registers as absolutely no spell casters, although some of their monk abilities qualify as SLA.

You have a strong feeling that a suggestion at this point would be against the rules.

Lystara

Obviously, something had transpired. She had to admit she had no idea on what, but it was clear that Lildorrinene, the succubus, had a hand in it. Perhaps she was best of not knowing.

As ready as she could be, ignoring the cat calls and threats as she'd learned do years ago, Lystara is focused on the sword. Such a thing was wrong, there was no doubt in her mind about it... The cups would come first, as Tishtina and her sisters had tasked the group with, but she would make sure that the blade never left the 'Playing Area'. Somehow. For now, she concentrates on it, hoping to get a feel of it's aura, and of those that carry it.

Kotep's team does catch her off guard though. That seemed uncalled for, in her eyes. She looks down, wondering how she could have crossed them already, until it hits her. Drawing her sword, she nods. She was proud to have it at her side. She turns to the other sisters.

"This must be why..." Her tone is quiet, trying not to be overheard. "This sword is meant to be used by a champion of good. It protects her, and those under her watch, from spells used against them. It isn't infallible, but it might make the difference, and I think they recognized it."

Detect Evil on the group and the sword. Who (or what) on the MMR team has what level of Aura might be useful information for later.

Also, Noted on the puzzles and encounters. I don't have many tools, but I'll likely try to find a way to use Shatter or Animate Object creatively.

Dot, Because she wasn't really with the group the day before, Lildorrinene will do without the ectoplasmic armor. So, if I measure correctly, she has resist acid/ sonic on her (from mass resist)? how much protection is that? That, and heroes' feast. I think that's all, right?

The Kotep casters can all use 9th level spells. In both catagories. As for the monks, you can detect that they can all assume an ethereal state. Youre not sure how, but you know they can. All the swords of the Morgaz-Rohdan team give off magical auras, as do assorted pieces of armour, shields and other protective items. Theres too much going on to isolate, but theres nothing you havent seen before. Except for that sword. And that sword is just too powerful to analyze with the quick look you are taking.

Lystara Kotep's team does catch her off guard though. That seemed uncalled for, in her eyes. She looks down, wondering how she could have crossed them already, until it hits her. Drawing her sword, she nods. She was proud to have it at her side. She turns to the other sisters.

Lystara, and anyone else who has ranks in Know: Religion will realize, its not so much the holy power of the sword that has them irritated. Its the fact that it bears the symbol of Lysindra on it. There are many deities in Daystor that dislike or even hate each other. However the only deity/deity hatred that even comes close to matching the Daren Philisar/Rohdan Bindar hatred, is the Lysindra Damaris/Kotep Arasin hatred.
As for Detect Evil on the sword, its not neccesary...or even advisable. It would be the equivalent of looking directly into the sun.

Dot glances around at her teammates, trying to reassure the others with her smile, her eyes still glowing with the effect of her divination. She speaks through the group's telepathic bond.

"Charming. The Koteps are all extremely powerful priests and arcanists. Not in any way to be underestimated. The monks all show the ability to move through the ethereal realm. Depending on the nature of the obstacles below, this - combined with their mobility - might indeed be formidable. And our nemeses are indeed brutes, but the swords are just as insanely powerful as you think they are."

She turns to her menagerie, bidding them a fond farewell and leaving final instructions. She pauses to breathe a prayer to Sabrina, asking for her wits to be as sharp enough to help see the group through.

Still no auras on the Koteps or the monks, then? Cool!

When Lil and Lia returned the previous night, Lia looked different ... very different. In fact, she looked very much like a young girl down on her luck and forced into a life of prostitution ... in other words she looked very much like a nobody, and as she explained to the others, she intended to remain in this disguise during the pre-competition proceedings the following morning.

And indeed she did, the mundane disguise requiring only minor touch ups in the morning, the form she presented to the other teams was that of a young nobody, definitely someone who didn't belong amongst the august personages gathered there, and what's more, to anyone with some form of arcane sight, she appeared to only be carrying a couple of magical wands.
Lia's disguise is a completely mundane disguise fashioned with Lil's help the previous evening: (1d20+24) ... roller didn't work for some reason

All Lia's equipment (except for two wands) appears non-magical due to Magic aura cast the previous morning.

As she stands amongst the group, she looks at each of the members of the other three groups, appearing more and more awestruck and worried as she looks at each of them and appearing to faint when she looks at the massive sword that the Rhodan fighters appear to be carrying.Bluff (pretending to be a nobody, i.e. someone who is not a threat): (1d20+29)[39](take 10 - skill mastery)

As she does her act, Lia is very discreetly memorizing each of the individuals they will be competing against, paying particular attention to the two ?Rhodan? fighters that are dragging that huge sword around. (Mainly so that she can use locate person on them later)
As she faints, she casts detect thoughts using silent spell and sleight of hand [40] to hide the fact that she was casting and heighten spell to put more omphf into the spell. (Detect thoughts DC27)
She will start detecting thoughts of the Rhodan fighters, then will move on to the monks, and finally the cleric-mages.

Lia, detect thoughts is a time sensitive spell, in that the longer you study, the more you get, and time is not something you have much of right now. But you do get a few things
The focused minds of the monks are too difficult to break through, at least in the time you have, and you figure you are better off going to the others.
The Kotep mages thoughts oscillate between getting as many Cups as they can, and killing Lystara. Even given the importance of this competition, its surprising that both ideas seem to hold equal prominence.
The Rohdan-Morgaz group are much easier to read, seeing as their thoughts are so much more simplistic. They are focused on getting the Cups, and then getting the cups. There are two minds that are far more focused, the Cups are upper in their minds, but you have a brief, momentary vision of a woman lying before them and them taking out that sword...but its gone before you can see more.

Your game begins in 3...2...1

The glade that the party was in fades away, and the party finds themselves in a bare room. There is only one other door in the room, at the far side of the room. In between you, and the door, is a raised dais, about 2 feet high, made of black stone.
On top of the dais, is a bronze idol of a human figure. You think it would be human sized if it were standing, however right now, it is sitting cross legged on the dais. In front of it is a large bronze bowl, filled with a burning flame.
As the party appears, the idol's eyes snap open, and in an almost child like voice, it says

Lildorrinene muses to herself, I doubt this will work as this test is probably designed against this type of circumvention, but I can't consider myself capable if I don't at least check the basics. Besides, I'm the only one who can be helped by this...

She uses her ethereal jaunt ability (self only) .... disappearing from view from her teammates (unless they can see the invisible/ ethereal). She tries to pass through the door. Assuming it's blocked, she'll try the walls, floor, and ceiling ... there's every possibility that the door might be fake and a real egress visible only when the idol is sated.

This was not the first thing Melinda had been expecting. Dampness had been the first thing she had been expecting. Darkness, as well. This was downright comfy.

The second thing she wasn't expecting was the stinginess from her fellows. "Oh, you people, so poor in spirit," chastised the bardess, moving towards the center of the room. Melinda had sold a bunch of trinkets two days before at the festival market. It had all been stashed inside her extradimensional backpack, as she hadn't thought of a better place to put it.

From her sack she pulled out about two hundred platinum. "For the common prostitutes," she dedicated.
Another two hundred platinum. "For the widows."
Another two hundred platinum. "For the destitute."
"For the hungry."
"For the cold."
"For the diseased and afflicted."
"For the war-trodden."
"For the young orphans."
"For the old and childless."
"For the deaf."
"For the dumb."
"For the mute."
"For the blind."
"For the faithless, for they lack fellowship."

All in all, just over twenty-five hundred platinum stood in little piles round the statue. Melinda had mounted the dais and had finished making an entire revolution, having completed a ritual circle of thirteen points and closed with the last.

And then she leaned in closer.

"Listen, statue," Melinda hissed through clenched teeth, barely audible. "I don't appreciate having my charity publicly called into question." She was staring the statue in the face, nose to nose. "I want a receipt for this. I want to remember the sound of every single coin that hits this bowl even after I leave this plane, and know that every single one has been delivered. If the least of these is missing, I'll be back in ten years with a hammer, and I'll smash that smirk off of your face myself, forget the Cups."

She stood back. "Or you're not getting a copper from me. Got that?"

If your answer's good and you open the door, you'll get your gold. If you won't open the door, we can start trying other metals." Tali fingers the adamantine blade of her sword to make sure her point gets across. "Of course, any negotiation has to start with a gesture of good faith." She drops a gold piece in the statue's bowl. "Now you know my coin's good. Your turn."

She approached the statue in a slightly coy way 'After all, everyone wants something.' The suggestion in her voice is entirely subconscience. 'This handsome fellow wants gold.' She leaned closer to the sitting figure, smiling brilliantly 'We want to get out of this room.' She produced two coins from her pouch and, holding them between thumb and forefinger. She held them just underneath the statue's nose, just within it's field of vision 'There's no reason we can't fulfil each other's needs.' She leaned closer to whisper in it's ear 'Give me what you want and I-' she dropped one coin upon the fire 'Will give you-' she dropped the other 'What you want.'

Peridot sighs.

"Very well. Let's see if this is enough for you. Taleira, I may need your strong arms to assist with this contribution"

Taking a few flakes of gold from an inside pocket, Peridot begins chanting. She gestures towards the bowl. A massive column of gold appears above the flames and disappears into the bowl.

"How's that?"

Using Major Creation to create a cylinder that's a few inches narrower than the bowl, and has a commensurate height, to make 18 cubic feet of gold. A cubic foot of gold weighs just over 1200 pounds, so the column has a value of 60,300gp. If that's not enough, I don't know what will be. :smallwink:

"This little creting wants gold right? Whenever we put gold in the bowl, it burns up... I wonder..."

If the bowl can't be moved, she'll step towards the idol and see if it can be lifted. Then she looks back at the flames in the bowl with a purpose.

"Were this little nuisance to burn up, do you think it would go to where all the burned gold went?"

Can't do anything else until I know if the idol and the bowl can be moved. I'm suggesting we either put the idol in the bowl to send him to all the gold, or put the bowl under the idol to do the same.

"What in Daystor for?" retorted Melinda. "You're just a statue. You never leave this plane. There's not even a marketplace in this dungeon!" She held her hands out in protest. "You can't spend the money, and if you're not going to give it to someone else who can, then it's useless. Give me your word in the names of all the gods who are watching us right now that you'll give it all to real people who need it," and she was speaking from the heart here, "people who actually have the -right- to be holding begging bowls, and you can have all these little shiny piles here. All of them." I can't believe I'm lecturing a statue about the merits of taking my money. She gave the statue an ominous and reproachful glare. "Or..." and like a mother threatening to discipline a child, she started scooping the coins off the dais into her hands again, pile by pile by pile...

"Careful, ladies," requested Melinda with a newfound smirk on her face. "Please don't trigger a trap before I'm done with these piles, that would be such a shame." With the statue's non-response to her taunt, she was picking up the pace of her cleanup job, and was more than halfway around the dais already.

After watching Dot, Taleira and Lil get going on the statue's end of things, Melinda decided she was going to take a closer look at that brazier. "I'll give it a good turn, it may be best to put some distance between yourself and the idol, just in case something else starts burning." Her warning in the air, she'll turn the idol 90 degrees once anyone who wants to get out of the way has a chance to.

As the door opens to the next room, you see one of the Cups in the room. Your joy is quickly tempered, the Cup is sitting on a black pedestal and there is shimmering field of some type that completely surrounds it. Just below the top of the pedestal is a small hole.

On the other side of the room is a table. From where you stand, you can see a set of weighing scales, and 8 small balls. With a second look, you see that the balls are all the same size as the hole in the pedestal. Sitting on the scale is a rolled up scroll.

There is also a door leading out of the room.

Telasi
2011-03-30, 05:00 PM

MikelaC1
2011-03-30, 05:04 PM
One of these balls weighs more than all the others, but only just by a little. You must use this scale to determine which one it is, and then insert that ball into the pedestal.
But there is a catch, you may only use the scale twice.

Telasi
2011-03-30, 05:15 PM
"Let's see, eight balls, two uses of the scale. If we put all eight in the first time, we half the number of possible balls. After that, we can half the number again, but that leaves us making a choice between two balls. Anybody have a better idea?" Taleira looks to the rest of the party, waiting to get their input before doing anything with the scales.

OOC: This plan assumes it's a balance type scale. That is the most logical option for the setting, but it's not absolutely clear.

Toliudar
2011-03-30, 05:19 PM
Dot steps up and examines the scroll carefully.

"I might, actually. If we put three of the balls on each side of the scale the first time, that may tell us exactly what we need to know."

This is more clearly outlined OOC.

Still mentally congratulating herself for not having given the statue any of her money, Melinda entered the room just in time to hear Dot's solution. She liked having Dot around for situations like this. A twitch in the corner of Melinda's eye betrayed an instinctive unease at having her friend's idea so conveniently appropriated by one of the Nocticulans, but she decided against making a fuss over it right then and there. It would have been too damaging to the unity of the group, and there were still 9 more Cups to find. "Huh, if there are 4 teams and the other teams have all found one by now, then this competition will be over in a very short time," she instead commented.

MikelaC1

Taleira follows Dot's plan, and with 2 weighings, selects the ball she thinks is the heaviest. She walks over to the pedestal, as she approaches it, she sees a low hum coming from the field. She takes a deep breath and places the ball in the hole. There is a tense moment that lasts less than a second as the party waits breathlessly for an explosion, and then the hum from the field stops suddenly and then the field disappears. The Cup can be easily claimed.

First Dalcar, now this. This pattern of competitiveness from the Nocticulans really only made Lil and Lia more worrisome to Melinda. She could just see the sort of arguments now. "Our champions were so much more accomplished than yours," a mock-Dalcar crowed. "5 competitors eliminated before the game even started." It would only get worse from there. Zanthia would make some argument about how she'd organized the whole thing, and Melinda figured that what tricks Cassandra might choose to employ were quite possibly beyond her young imagination.

Not only crafty, but merciful the Gods were to make everyone forget their experiences here. She knew Zanthia would never forgive her if she were to learn somehow that the group had ended up falling into a grand competition with itself, even if they did come out of the dungeon with all 10 Cups. Goddess forbid that any one of the 15 of them would come out before the others did, with or without a Cup. What disaster that would be...no one would even remember what actually happened! And how the accusations would fly!

With a growing sense of urgency Melinda realized that if she wanted to achieve what she desired, she would have to play her hand carefully and well. Easier said than done, especially when her hand was, so far, empty of her own achievements in this group...

The corridor goes 30 ft north, and then makes a T. Written on the far wall is:

One route leads to the nest

One path is the least
One choice makes you the feast
One route leads to the beast

There, arcane-mechanical engines are devised that are powered by connection to some mystical thing called a 'generator'. That was notably the first time that Melinda had formally acknowledged Lildorrinene, and addressed her as a priestess would address an allied outsider of the faith; if Lil was planning on bringing expectations and hopes from position into the matter of their discourse, it was clear that Melinda was open to the offer. "I'd just always found that art has plenty power of its own to win over the hearts and minds of people, or even to let one's soul transmute one's flesh, so it was easy enough to keep walking down that road. But my unawareness of these matters does explain why I've never found myself gifted with powers of planar travel. I've always been quite envious of that in my colleagues."

"That's funny, I was also the first person ready to give up on it," Melinda admitted, accepting the Cup. "And I called your blind anyway, so we're even. Besides, none of us is going to remember any of this anyway," she said with a smirk. Lil could tell that Melinda didn't really -mean- that last comment the way she said it; it was too much of a quip. Indeed, she hoped and suspected that something would remain of whatever relationships had knotted over the course of the competition; she trusted it did, given how the Melias-Morgaz-Rohdan team had bonded so strongly (or not) after the last competition.

Melinda did her ring-and-muffle trick again before offering the Cup to Lil for further masking. "Can you do what Lia did? I probably shouldn't carry it, honestly. The only storage space I have is enchanted to bring up whatever item the user desires. Not the best choice for Cup storage."

LILDORRINENE

Lildorrinene smiles, more warmly than might be thought of the ice queen, but betrays this feminine bond for only a second before her face once again becomes austere before handing the cup to: "Leanne, Spellbinder Non-Pareil, would you happen to have a safe place to hide this cup?"

She then looks to Lia, Taleira, and Eliza. "Madame Dulcinea failed to meet the call given to us, the opportunity of zeal given to the Cordial Trinity. Lia, I look to you for your uncanny ability to lend advice to practical matters. Taleira, for such amazing personal willpower, you never learned the sorcerous art of bluffing; we are not rivals. Eliza, you are as good a sage as ever one has known in the Philosophies Four, but you're in-situ power is the expression of Hippolyta's legacy in force of arms and Nocticula's purest and intuitively learned secrets; I will need your advice."

Lildorrinene then looks at each member of the party and addresses them...The succubus looks at Lystara. "Paladin, though you may hate what I am - even should you hide this rancor in the fervor of the mission - please understand that we may admire our strengths even in those we would otherwise destroy. Trying to keep this crew stealthy is a laughable concept, and wholly unnecessary so we can dispense with a squad of scouts in the front. We are in another's fane whence something may pop out at anytime. You strike me as being far more aware than others of your profession, and are heavily armored all the same. I request you take vanguard. I shall be your fellow lineman to cover at junctures for doors and against traps. My protections - my own and those provided by the others - are enough all around to make me the most flexible and protected front-liner."

"Szer Elem, we'll want your bow in the second rank, not the middle. Your peerless elven vision will notice things a little farther out should we be in a long chamber or corridor. Your reflexes are impossibly fast, and being closer to front allows for more precise shots in vital areas. Your awareness and reflexes will make it hard to surprise you, and harder to hit you.

"Peridot, you are my complement. My defenses and demonic vision is better than yours, so being behind me is best. Meanwhile, your constant use of arcane vision - and your likely greater intellect - will shore up my visual weaknesses nicely. In anything that seems like a soft passage or ingress - we will platoon out with you in front since you are probably better at trap location. I will assist you in this, and in bypassing or sabotaging the same. In battle, you and I both can become ethereal to allow heavier types to fill in for us."
...............................................

"There are so very many of us, that our greatest weakness is being pinned in such a manner as to provide no flexibility for movement - thus damning each other to be pinned in our current formation. The above is our first fire team, two by two. There will be a full 10' space between Team One. Otherwise, if a wounded member in front needs to fall back, or another needs to move forward, there are too many of us to allow that movement .... especially if we are pincered front and back."

"Team Two ... Leanne will be in line behind left flank (Lystara & Szer). As a cleric that is fast on her feet, you will be able to respond quickly to casualties in the front or rear. Elisa Toledo, you are our most vulnerable member, so you'll be behind her (which in turn is behind warrior types). Taleira, we need you next to Leanne as the only primary combatant in Team Two. Your speed will lend itself well to rushing forward when Dot and I go ethereal for positioning. Lia, you're behind Taleira. Your buffing beguilations (haste, etc) have a good chance of getting a maximum number of our entire group. Your reflexes and defenses are good enough to be a confounding defender for the other two until other front-liners show up. Your expertise and Taleira's knowledge will also be instrumental as a central advisory."

"Again, don't let the flow and excitement of battle cause you to move too far forward or rearward and close off our 'soft spots' or we ruin our response, not enhance it. Once again, another 10' buffer between Teams Two and Three."
...........................................

"This brings us to Team Three. Melinda, you're front-left of this team, giving out your sweet notes to carry us through battle; then, followed up by your clerical power. Arcaneous, you are behind her. Your incredible senses more than keeps us safe from the rear; your combat training means you are too tough to take down easily; your defensive movement is baffling; and, your speed is such that you are able to fly forward in a flash to respond to frontal threats. Right-front is you, Pauline. You are our long-range spellbomber. Behind her is Eliza. Eliza, your senses may not be on par, but you are one of the toughest chicas among us; anyone trying to get at us from behind would have their work cut out for them to get past you."Lildorrinene allows this to sink in for a little bit ....

"Flight could also help us, if you're concerned with being able to get where we're needed, since it opens up extra space to maneuver in. In some places, a long-lasting spell or your own flight could also be tactically advantageous for the primary casters in particular. Generally, your plan seems sound." Lildorrinene smiles, more warmly than might be thought of the ice queen, but betrays this feminine bond for only a second before her face once again becomes austere before handing the cup to: "Leanne, Spellbinder Non-Pareil, would you happen to have a safe place to hide this cup?"

Here's a recap...Lystara-----Lildorrinene
Szer Elem------Peridot
(10' gap)
Leanne--------Taleira
Elisa Toledo----Lia Naila
(10' gap)
Melinda-------Pauline
Arcaneous-----Eliza
"Any questions?"

LILDORRINENE

Lildorriene looks at Elisa and says, "Both of your primary defenses are based on illusion. All it takes is a single golem, something with blindsight, or a creature with true seeing - or at least able to pierce illusions without regadr to your skill - to totally ruin your day."

OOC: Sleight of Hand to vanish the cup and put in my haversack [roll0] probably not enough to beat the sense motive monsters in this party, but good enough for the cheap seats

Im just going to ignore this, as this discussion has already been covered, you have the Cup in your haversack, but theres no way you can palm a 2.5' X 1.5' object in one hand.
Are there any other objections to formation proposed by Lil, and if not, are you proceeding?
By way, if someone is trying to map this thing out, dont bother. Its a demi plane creation and as such, changes according to the whims of the gods.

Melidna shrugged. "Sounds okay to me, I know I'm in the same place..." She figured that people had already found their place in the order anyway; Lil's most substantive suggestion was to maintain a healthy inter-group spacing, which she would have to mind. Most of the other people had already found their natural place within the group. Melinda, Pauline, Eliza, and Taleira were already at the back, Lystara and Lil and Dot at the front, and Arcaneus and Lia floated around the middle. Melinda certainly didn't mind trading Taleira for Ark, if neither of them was going to voice an objection.

"West?"

(OOC: Kudos, lostsole. It's still very good to have this all spelled out, though.)

I'm not finding the post that describes the doors. We must've had a lot of chatter since then. But if there is a spear-heading direct route (i.e., in front of her), that's the one she'll take. That said, she'll assist Peridot for trap detection.

LILDORRINENE

"And so it begins," sighs Lildorrinene. "Please forgive my sister, friends. It's simply the way Nocticulans process they're training - to develop that 'hunger' and always seek the vulnerabilities of a leader. Then, later, they actually mature beyond that and learn to gain greater success through co-operation. Hopefully, we'll see that same apotheosis of maturity and teamwork continuing throughout.

"Thank you, Dot. West is as fine a choice as any."

You go out the western door, proceed west, and then the hall turns north. It goes for about 40 ft. north, and ends in a door.
Im going to take a few liberties here, because theres nothing bad to the door
The door is checked for traps, and there are none, nor are there any magical auras to it. Listening at the door is likewise fruitless, nothing is heard. You re-assume your marching order, and Lystara opens the door, beginning to step in. The room is empty, however, at the other end of the room, opposite you is another door that is opening at the exact same time as yours. Coming through that door is the party of Kotep/Kiang monks. The room is about 60 ft wide, so the opponents are now 60 ft away from the front row of your group. Please roll init in the OOC thread.

LILDORRINENE

FLASHBACK

Lildorrinene answers Eliza. "Eliza, no slight at all was meant in placing you in the very rear. On the contrary, you hold a critical position. This impossibly unchartable dungeon will likely have dangers that can come at us from both ends. You and Arcaneous are protected us all from surprise. The two of you, legendary prowess of arms both, make an impenetrable wall.

"Once battle is enjoined, however, I have allotted the space in the 'buffer regions' for easy movement of allies from van to rear. However, your divine powers and your low mobility will means that you cannot clear the front line clear enough, and we have need of you mid-point for those that fall back. This wasn't a question of honor ... yours is unimpeachable in Nocticula's eyes, have no doubt. This was a function that I do not believe that anyone else can protect us from the rear nearly so well as yourself and Arcaneous."

Everything is true, but the latter part is a laid on a little bit thickly and not quite true. But her lowest Bluff beats Eliza's highest Sense Motive ... as her incomplete character sheet is currently listed .... so it should all sound as peacy and above-board as the other 95% of what she spoke.
ALCON (except Eliza)Lildorriene gives telepathic soothings to the other 'heavies' in the group that she is doing what she can so that inter-party rivalry is not instilled and destructive, so please take no offence to what she says about Eliza's prowess compared to what your own might be, and remember the reasons she recommended each your place............................................. ....

Lildorrinene calls out loudly, not only for the Kotep/ Kiang team, but also for her own teammates. "Greetings, esteemed rivals! For all concerned, let us greet each other not with rancor and blood, but such as we are .... sportsmanlike competitors and not unmannerly bandits.

"How now, devoted ascetics? I am Lildorrinene. Think of me and my form as you will, but remember that we are taken from all shades of morality and yet here working together this day. I have no doubt that your devotion to discipline and blessed focus means that your group is similarly committed to a task, and not a demand or lack of conscious, for the weal of your team.

"I hold no barbs or spittle, nor any hatred nor animosity, for any of you. At the encampment you caused no trouble, and were, in fact, the non-pareil of athletes before a game: given not to carousing but to a clear sight of the task ahead. Not so our other peers. For in the villainous skein of the Morgaz/Rohdan team, and that of the power-mad arcane worshippers, we both should see what both we should fear in such a clime as this; namely, that depravity will unseat us all without vigilance, and that they would use the enjoyment of good sport that our gods set forth as a poor means of inflicting pain without reprisal.

"What say you? and do you return my niceties with any introduction of your own, or remain homogenously nameless? I think we may have business betwixt us that will engender good camaraderie and excellent striving both."

Well, I certainly wasnt expecting that long a conversation, so it slightly changes the dynamics

As Lil speaks, the monks are slowly but warily moving into the room. You can see that there are 8 of them, and their first 4 (2 rows of 2) have now moved into the room. Assuming you do the same, your first 4 have also moved into the room, and so now the front rows are 40 ft. apart. Group 2 of your team is now at the door.
Two monks step forward, embroided on the first one's robes is the symbol of a clenched fist while the other one has the symbol of the scales of justice. They continue to regard you warily.

Words of deceit, from the follower of a decadent goddess, what are you trying to prove? We both know that there is only one course for us both to follow, and that being to defeat the teams of others or the puzzles, and gather up the Cups. Would you give us the Cups you have won in order to prevent bloodshed? I think not. As for us giving up our Cup, that will not happen. So what then is left?

While Lildorrinene and the monks continue their exchange, Dot stays behind the much taller woman and began preparing for the worst. She sends a mental murmur through to Lildorrinene as the monks begin their response.

"I'll follow your lead if you step to the side. It'll give those behind a better opportunity to join us in the room."

She then extends her mental message to all of her colleagues.

"That one, the one with the [distinctive characteristic], is the one holding the cup. He can't be allowed to leave."

Dot casts Silent versions of Greater Invisibility on herself and Haste on the entire group. She steps 10' off to the side, hugging the wall, once she's invisible.

"Push through," prodded Melinda to the back of the group then stuck in the doorway. Melinda actually had something to say, too, but she was too far back in the formation to easily take the stage from Lil's monolithic presence. The bardess was trying to reach the front but was reluctant to break formation in case it came to matter. Instead she had to resort to telepathy through the groups' bond. "Lil, I don't know what your plan is, but I feel you should offer them first passage. They may only have to find Cups, but we've also got to find our lost sisters. I don't want to jeopardize our chances of that with a battle with these people beforehand."

Given the monk's reaction, Taleira readies herself for battle, though she doesn't yet make a move. She slips into a balanced stance, and lets her sword rest in an easy guard meant to lure enemies into a vicious counterstrike. If any of the monks make a threatening move, she has a pair of spells coalescing in her mind, ready to cast with only a gesture and a word.

Enter Karmic Strike stance (no action; -4 to AC, but I can take an AoO on any enemy who hits me, interrupting as per normal AoO rules). Move: move forward to the front line, making room for allies behind if possible. Standard: Ready an action to cast Arcane Fusion if one or more of the monks take any action I deem hostile, including the following: movement, spellcasting, activation of magic items, attacking, retrieving any item but the Cup from storage, readying a weapon, concentrating intently, throwing any item, or continuing to speak in a manner not indicating willingness to surrender to myself or my allies.

Lystara

"What is left..." Lystara steps further into the room, as warily as the other monks, in order to let the rest of her 'sisters' pass. "Honestly? I think we all know." She raises her shield, which is bathed in a warm glow. Her sword though, stays gripped but at her side. She simply shifts it so that it's imagery is visible.

"I'll tell you my truth, at least if you'd believe it. I would have preferred not to run into you guys. Were we to have met in different circumstances... we'd probably argue, but nothing beyond that, I want to think." She gives the man with the scales a smile.

"In here though, we stand as opponents and with the bastards with the giant sword running around, the worse thing we could do is leave the other side beaten, but alive. They'd just be easy prey for a fate worse then death..." She takes a deep breath.

"So if there's no way around it, I'm ready whenever you are. Just grant me this. If you win, make sure Morgaz's sword is shattered" She shifts her stance, placing both hands on her weapon while her expression becoming much more grave. "Know that I will not pass down this task willingly though."

LILDORRINENE

Lildorriene moves comfortably and casually forward and to the side. While this gives her teams more move-in room, it also is done such that she waves at Szer and Peridot not to follow so closely. She wants to show, as much as possible for a demon, that she is sincere and willing to put herself into a brutally vulnerable position.

She looks at each monk as she accepts all accusations possible, knowing that the lawful party can only distrust the chaotic one. Which why she's taking the route of ultimate bluntness.

"I, personally, am a succubus. I am a demon. Doubt not when I say that I have toppled kingdoms and thrown entire regions into disarray. I have sucked the very life from men and women and feasted on their souls. I serve Nocticula, the Goddess of Lust ... and power through the same. I do not doubt these charges that may be levied. Not one."

She lets this admission weigh into the monks' minds.

"That is myself, and my targets usually have been those who would abuse their power anyway. We will not discuss such philosphies. What is important to note is that while ethically our deities are opposed, still the three goddesses our team supports must needs work together. That means that any lustful or base appetites must be suborned for the honor of all of our goddesses, we break apart much as two of my team caused the more decent men in the roguish team to part ways with the truly vile. Among our number, in fact, are those whose souls are without blemish that even you would weep to defame.

"For the deepest admission. The Morgahz/Rohdan team - for Melias' follwers have been separated and have quit this event- in the last of this competition, did such vile action against the spirit of the sport. You know that those that die here, upon the Games' end, are revived. This M/R group, however, carry with them a powerful artifact that is so horribly destructive, as to render any hope of sportful enterprise. This greatsword somehow ensures that a fallen person's soul is irrevocably destroyed.

"Irrevocably. If innocent, they do not receive the afterlife their virtue deserve. If evil, then the justice you can appreciate fails to punish wrongdoers. No matter your stripes, only the most unconscionably evil (or foolishly destructive) would wield such a thing. Please understand that a resident of the Abyss tells you this, that you may register this artifact's abuse in the cosmos. This greatsword was used to absolutely annihilate three of our number; only one was Nocticulan. The other two led blameless lives and sought to win honor for their goddess' in same-honour'd sport."

Now, she lets THAT sink in. :smalleek:

"Do not doubt that for cruel and unnatural sport they will use the same object on your members as well. I do not even wish such a fate on the wizards, whose black hearts well do mirror my own for calumny, licentiousness, and ill when once I am removed from my dutiful bounds with my sisters all.

"If we seek 'bloodshed' in the manner in which I fear you use it, I do not believe that either of us is willing to fight to so bitter an end that we will not break off hostilities. But that would only happen once there have been casualties on both sides.

"If we do this now, then these villains win for both sides we shall be depleted. The rogues of the M/R team are not to be understimated for their ability to ambush and strike so mortal a wound in so short a time that without clerics among you, you shall quickly fall ... and be destroyed utterly. The wizards, likewise, we have verified as possessing some of the most powerful magics a mortal may possibly wield. We might be raised when all is done, and yet I think that they are powerful enough that they will seek to cause pain ... pain that scars the psyche and thus never heals, despite the remarriage of body to soul.

"To this end, I recommend a truce. Now, I am not necessarily so foolish to believe that you will allay all reservations as to join us. However, if you understand the threat of the artifact in the one team, and the soul-crushingly powerful magics of the other team. In fact, it may be the only means of survival for both of us. And think on this ... the other two teams may well think of such a thing themselves. The combination of pure physical prowess and nigh-godly magic with treacherous hearts redoubled? Indeed, such an alliance is of doubtless benefit.

"We may be a group with our own wicked ones, self included, but not all souls are lost and the vitriolic must be reined in with the base. Yet, our own fickle natures understand the value of glory in competition as much as your own, but for different reasons. Monastics are known not only for their wisdom, but their ability to see through dissemblance by way of their detachment. I call on you to use that discernment to know the truth of my words. If this does not convince you of the matter I present," she says, slowly and non-threateningly taking out Wishkiller (her kukri), "then this I vow, for well you know that no one of any calling dare call upon their deity in jest or levity."

She cuts her left hand ... just enough to do only about a point of damage after DR ... but to get the point across.

"This cut is to represent that if I seek any treachery against your number before - combined - we have collected all ten cups, then as Nocticula is my witness ... if not in this divinatorily interrupted space, then in my heart whence I have left this place ... then shall I cut off my left hand with this kukri. It is a blade ill-suited to the task, and will require a long time of many cuts to succeed and be most painful. Afterwards, I shall never again seek to replace that hand in any manner, as an outward manifestation that I failed a vow given in the name of my goddess and in sight of others equally devoted, though severally aligned, and did not prove that I am capable on my own without need of betrayal."

She looks to her own numbers. "Though I cannot enforce such a vow on you, I hope that you see the wisdom of my words and likewise will dare no trickery to destroy this bond, for you must see how dangerous our foes are, especially if they seek the same truce before falling on each other." Meanwhile, she sends out telepathy to her teammates: Do not be so foolish to use your spells to attempt to 'convince' them of my words. They will detect and resist such things quite well, and then the plan is foiled to suit your ego to have your spells succeed. There's a reason a beguiler such as myself still has labored to talk to people the 'old-fashioned way.'

She looks back to the monks. "The cups we gain from our enemies we shall split amongst ourselves for portage to the end. Once complete, yes, we shall strive mightily, but do so as friends. We shall 'have a go' at each other, but unlike what is offered by our foes, we shall do so as those who understand what it is to enjoy athletic play when our several honors are at stake when we return to our homes and tell of our sport. We shall not look at this as 'bloodshed' but a competition between teams that wish to exalt in the gifts given us, and those for which we have worked. Though your blows and our magics capable, we shall offer no rancor or hatred or sadism. The enjoyment we receive will not be of gloating, but of tournamental victory. Winner takes all 10 cups. The side that loses can still take joy in an effort nobly given, as well to have suborned unrelenting villainy. Win or lose, we will have our stories to tell. And, who knows, we may learn to respect each other.

"What say you to my offer? Can we be the example of the comradeship and sportsmanship that will be legendary for all games to come, regardless of outcome?"

Lia watches and listens as Lildorrinene speaks to the monks, and though she is tense and ready to act should the situation demand, she waits.

As Lil swears her oath, Lia glides forward to stand beside her, her young body swaying as she moves, "I am perhaps the youngest of our company, but let that not detract from the fact that I too will swear not to beget treachery nor magics upon you should you agree to our offer of a truce, until between us we hold all 10 cups."

"Thus in Nocticula's name do I so swear"

As she utters the last words, Lia then begins to dance, slowly at first, and then ever faster as she increases the tempo to a crescendo finishing on one knee with her upturned hand and forehead on the floor. The dance is short, and not at all erotic, yet it is highly emotive and somehow speaks of her sincerity in this matter.

Melinda was shocked and amazed at the turn of events. Of course this was the best course of action, but....why didn't I think to push for it?

Maybe this is the reason I didn't make as much progress in the world as I would have liked to by now, she reflected. Maybe it's just because I think it's not possible...I'm too used to the way things look to be. Too used to looking at what I'm doing, thinking of small barriers as concrete, and to be surmounted. All the change in the world happens when no one's looking, and maybe I've got to not look too.

But on the other hand, to throw in under the leadership of the Nocticulans was annoying enough. Not that she minded them, personally, at all. No, it was their culture. She felt that the idea of using and pursuing power was in and of itself perverse. Wealth was natural, but powerless here; power was perverse, but powerful. And to see the perversity of it, one only had to look at the people it produced. Sure, Lil was a marvelous leader. But she was an Emissary. That was to be expected. The disturbing part was that Lia, Taleira, and Eliza, (presumably) mortals, seemed to instinctively define themselves in relationship to Lil, an outsider, when in her presence. That was downright backwards and couldn't possibly be healthy in the long term.

It dawned on Melinda that she'd probably have to throw in her own time at the bottom of that heap of leadership to learn Lil's tricks - the ways of Nocticula - if she ever hoped to attract the followership of that church. And from the number of surprises Lil pulled, it was clear that Melinda still had a lot to learn. For one thing, Lil was awfully hierarchical for a succubus.

Sadly, she reflected, this trial was one of the best opportunities she would have to do so, and she probably wouldn't remember such an educational experience anyway. But she had to begin somewhere.

"You have my word also, upon a vow of 10 years' silence should I fail, Temptress be my witness."

The rest of the monks file into the room, clearly ready for battle but not threateningly at all. This allows the rest of your team to enter the room as well. The two lead monks confer for a moment, then one turns back to you.

Both sides are tensed for battle and I would not want this action to be the spark to an outbreak. Will you allow Kareth here indicating one of the other monks to cast a Commune in the matter of the Sword? I swear that will be his only action for now, and that he is not preparing an offensive spell to trick you

If the answer is yes, the one monk goes into a trance, and the rest gather around him, the discussion seems...vigorous.

LILDORRINENE

Lildorrinene settles down onto her knees, and then gracefully sweeps into a cross-legged sitting position, draping her robes over her knees, but showing just a little bit of ankle and lower leg. This position is so vulnerable it's ludicrous. "I cannot speak for the bearer of the sword," she says [is it Melinda?], "but I hope that we can be that open and amenable. It seems it is a source of friction between our teams."
