THIS IS IT. Many of you have seen, either through SMBG or the You! thread, that I have been planning to propose to my girlfriend very soon. That time is this Friday.

First, some background. My girlfriend and I have been dating for a year and a half now. I am a future drama teacher (as well as biology, hence my name, but drama is the important thing here), and part of my drama experience here at my university is that I am a leader in my university's improv troupe, the IMPROVables, and my girlfriend is a member. We hold shows twice a semester, and our first of this semester is set to be performed this friday.

Typically there are two actual shows each show night, each led by a portion of the panel of leaders, and I arranged for my girlfriend to be in the show that I am leading.

In many shows, we play a game that those familiar with improv comedy might recognize by the name of catchphrase. In this game, two actors create a scene based on an audience gimme, but during the course of that scene they must pull prewritten phrases from the audience out of their pockets and say them, no matter what they say. The goal is for the phrases to fit into the scene, that is, for the scene to be guided by the content of the phrases.

Wow, rambling.:smallsigh: As you may have guessed if you stuck with me through this whole post, my plan is to, during the last game of our show (a game of catchphrase played between my girlfriend and I) at the end of the scene pull out a planted catchphrase that I will give myself that says "[Girlfriend] will you marry me?" and proceed to present her with the ring.

The reason that I am posting this now was that I just this night called her father to ask for her hand, and got his full blessing.

The ring was purchased with certain conditions attached, and one was that I can not show it to anyone who she will take great pleasure in showing it off to later. Since my dear girlfriend is not a member of the playground (though she is starting to read OotS, and as such this might be a risk, oh well) I am permitted to show you folks. So here it is.

It's white gold with two small square diamonds framing a large also square diamond. The way they're set forms two interlocking semicircles underneath them, if you can't tell from the admittedly low-quality photo.

Pictures of the event after it happens!

Man, she'll only be a little taken aback from the card, but once you pull out that ring...that kind of surprise might actually make her stomach leap out of her throat. You might have to wait through a minute or two of schock recovery before you get your 'yes'.

I guarantee the audience will be entertained, though.

Expect either disbelief OR copious tears. I had two friends get engaged last month and both girls reacted completely opposite from how their fiances thought they would. XD One ended up going "What's going on? Wait, what?" and basically being shocked and the other (who is not prone to crying) was bawling.

Great job, MartyTheBioGuy! I like your idea for proposal, but if you're both D&D nerds then I would suggest saying "Would you accept this Ring of Marriage +1?" or somesuch. (This may or may not be a joke. You have been warned.)

I feel compelled to give you the advice that my Latin teacher gave us, "...and gentlemen? Always remember, when you do ask that 'special someone' to marry you, genuflect. Always genuflect. If there is broken glass on the floor, genuflect. This is the second question that her friends will ask and anytime it happens to them, it will be brought back up. Always. Genuflect." The conversation rambled on and on, but the moral stayed the same: bend that knee! Other than that, good luck!

Isn't there some kind of code of ethics against rigging an improv game? I suppose the Rule of Cool supercedes any other sub-laws, in any case.

Another idea you could have, as long as you are rigging improv games...I've seen one game where the players act out a scene, but randomly pull lines out of a hat and say them. If its just the two of you, make sure you go first. Do the lines normally, but only have an odd number of lines in the hat. When you draw your last one out, sleight of hand a slip with "will you marry me?" into the hat. She draws it out and quickly reads it, only to realize that she just proposed to YOU. At that point, all you have to do is accept!

Cause you know...in Soviet Improv, girlfriend propose to YOU!

Hope it went well tonight!

Okay, so the full story (video to come when a friend puts it on YouTube).

We honestly had one of our best shows ever, with lots of great scenes and games, and everything worked well on schedule. It was great. So we got to the last scene, and my co-leader called Heather and I to the stage, and got the suggestion for our scene (Pineapple, a fruit of love in Hawaii...). Then, we proceeded to act in one of the worst scenes I'd ever been in. It was random and odd and kinda... well, not all that great. I WAS NERVOUS, OKAY!? Anyway, then I made a super smooth (read: awkward as all get out) segue into the subject of love, pulled my planted catchphrase from my pocket, got down on one knee, and read it off. Then I pulled out the ring, and she was tearing up and said something like, "Are you serious!?!?!" And we hugged there onstage (kept from making out as it was a family-friendly show) for like 5 minutes, and then the stage was flooded with people congratulating us.

Pics!
