<narrows eyes> Hmmm ... what's the warranty on this thinking cap?

I'll take three. And a kitten. And a slice of cheese pizza, if there's any around, 'cause I'm hungry as well as tired and uninspired. :smalltongue:

But kitties are baby kats, and puppies are baby dogz, chicks and baby henz and roostas and babies are baby humens, and gomtaps are baby gorzorins!

And one of them MUST be cute to everybody.

But he's not a baby, is he? When I think of a baby, I think of what they look at the six pound stage, when they're basically a pink balloon with a siren built in.

An infant at that age ? Not cute. Especially not at 3AM.

Your ... grandson? Very cute indeed.

Is that arm on the left belonging to Zeb? And did your son get any XP for winning?

Replace the clear glass with opaque glass. Then the Kitty would be both alive AND dead, until somone broke the glass, which giives the Kitty a 50/50 chance of being alive when needed.

But isn't the chance of the cat being alive or dead irrelevant to the condition of the glass? Should that chance not hold if the glass is transparent, also?

Brian P.

Schrödinger's Cat is considered both dead and alive because one can not see into the box to determine whether it is dead or alive.
If there had been a transparent glass side on the box, then you would have visual evidence of it's state of being.
Hence, the condition of the glass is very much relevant in that case.

But what if the cat looks the same alive or dead? Is not the experiment valid? Take a look at the OP picture I put up: Is that a live kitten or a stuffed mockup?

If a transparent port gives no more information than an opaque port, the transparency or lack thereof is irrelevant for the purposes of Schroedinger's kitten. Or so I contend.

No, actually - at least, not if I remember correctly the contents of that one course that I took a few years ago.

Quantum Decoherence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoherence) - that is, the phenomenon that in Schrödinger's experiment makes the cat fall out of its superpositioned state and into a pure one - does not really depend at all from the ability of the observer to make an inference about the state of the object: in brief, decoherence between two (or more) states happens whenever some interaction occurs between the rest of the system. and the photons entering the box will do that just fine (well, to be more precise, it is also necessary that the photons will interact with the system in different ways depending on whether the cat is alive or dead; but it's not necessary that an observer can tell the difference).

Hope I got it right, this is really far from my speciality - hopefully someone more knowledgeable can correct me if I made any mistakes.

In which case, if there are air holes for the cat to breathe in the first place, it will be impossible to perform Schroedinger's experiment at this macro level. Because particles will be continually interacting with the system unless it is entirely sealed off on every conceivable level, which would of course kill the kitten in short order.

Is that correct?

But then, IIRC Schroedinger's cat is a thought experiment rather than practical lab work. Useful as a metaphor for describing quantum interactions, falls apart completely if thought at at the macro level.

Brian P.

Yes, it's not really feasible to put macroscopic objects of the size of a cat in superposition: if I remember correctly, that has been done in practice for small atoms or molecules, at most, since almost any uncontrolled interaction with the environment ruins the superposition (or, as some prefer to think, puts the whole universe in entanglement with the object).

That is one seriously cute baby you have produced, Alarra. However, I'm a little jaded about baby-cuteness these days: my sister is currently pregnant with her eighth baby. Yes, you read that right. The existing children are starting to show signs of stress associated with overcrowding in populations of rats. One morning my sister will wake up and find one of her kids has eaten the others.

I'm joking. Sort of. :smallsad:
