Generally speaking, how do you guys peg life spans for races where it doesn't specifically mention it?

I'm looking for the Darfellan life-span specifically (Stormwrack, D&D), but I'm kind of interested in how you guys would do it for any race really, in any edition of any RPG.

I don't have the book with me, but I'm pretty sure that the Darfellans were given a specific lifespan in Stormwrack. I'll check tonight, unless someone beats me to it.

As for the general question, in cases where the race has no stated lifespan, I guestimate something plausible, based on similar races. For example, orcs & goblinoids never got a racial book dedicated to them (damn shame), so my formula for calculating an orc's lifespan worked out to be something like this:

Human Lifespan - Half-Orc Lifespan = X
Half-Orc Lifespan - X = Orc Lifespan

So, basically, I fudge it, but I try to cite precedent when I do. I hope that this helps, or at doesn't hinder.

I assume human until otherwise specified. On the note of Orcs I just assume half-orc, until I know something different.

Pin max age for males at 65, and females at 85, which fairly closely mirrors actual Killer Whales (a bit longer on average, but still).

Figure out the formulas from there, I guess.

Male: 60 + 1d12 (maximum)

Female: 80 + 1d12 (maximum)

Races of Faerun had aging tables for orcs and goblins (among other races).

Ah-HA! I found it. The Darfellan aging info is on page 46 of Stormwrack. For those who don't have their books ready:

Adult Age = 14 years
Middle Age = 33 years
Old Age = 50 years
Venerable Age = 65 years
Maximum Age = +2d10 years

Scha-weet. So they are kind of reminiscent of actual killer whale ages like Djinn suggested.

yes the human life span template is usually pretty accurate for all humanoid races
