The battle against the Trinity has been won, the dark warrior who sought to become a God over all creation has been cast down by you, the unlikely heroes of humble origins. A world rent asunder by war, terror and even your own titanic feet now rebuilds, the kingdoms returning to the old ways.

Today, merely a year after the conclusion of your titanic battle, you rest in the halls of your guild. Once an establishment with barely a name to it, it has become the world's most famous, most desired and busiest mercenary company in any of the lands, and flocks of adoring commoners treck to your halls to catch but a glimpse of your mighty visages.

But today, as you sit in idle rest, a different, more humble appearing guest has arrived. A large toad, about the size of a cat, has hopped to attendance.

My Lords, I beseach the an audience. croaks the toad. Though you have saved us all once already, and spend your time now taking your much deserved due, that which you have saved is again in peril.

[Sinfonian]

Dean reclines against a wall laconically, as he looks at the messenger toad. "Oh? What does the world need of us this time? Time to slay the gods? Destroy an evil empire? Perform a charity event for an orphanage? Please, say on. I'm ribbited!"

[Torgarn]

Ralam rolls his eyes at Dean's supposed witticism, he looks at the toad What is this danger you speak of beast?

Ouros with his long dark hair and blue eyes was in the room as well and was reading a book.

"Come on friends, you need to ask the real question here. How much?"

[goken04]

Malcolm, dressed in gray archmagi robes and wearing his signature blue hat, reclines in his chair that many would say resembles a throne. On his lap sits a vicious looking rat who his allies recognize as Zit, Malcolm's Imp familiar in his alternate form. Standing next to him, always prepared for battle, is the powerful and intimidating R'ghozitzunt, Malcolm's Balor cohort.

"My companion," Malcolm says, motioning to Ouros. "Brings up an extraordinarily sagacious and, more to the point, germane inquiry. As it stands my current pecuniary situation is lacking in, shall we say, girth and has thus halted my arcane research. Perhaps this little toad could tell us precisely what this quest entails in way of compensation?"

"Heh. Toad. I find fried toad absolutely delictable." grins R'ghozitzunt, showing his many sharp teeth.

[Yukitsu]

Well, you can eat the toad when it's done talking to you, if that suits you. croaks the toad. For payment itself, I doubt very much that what we can offer goes beyond what you can acquire for yourselves, but the value of what we seek was recently determined to be 2 million gold pieces per item, of which there are 8. We will pay twice that for its safe return.

The items themselves are of little consequince to ones as great as yourselves, but to a common man, they elevate them to near the power of the greatest outsiders. The dark Godling you slew possessed them, unclaimed in your conquest for they were discarded as but useless and dusty tomes, collected by scroungers after lost bits that you had left aside. These books are now in the hands of 8 madmen, and they are tearing about the world with no regards to the consequinces, nor any understanding of the curse they have brought down upon us, for if those books are not returned to their rightful place within the year, the world will end.

[Torgarn]

Would you deign to identify yourself or selves? I don't much feel like doing the work of a faceless being or beings who talk to me through a toad.

"The end of the world? Why that does sound like a terrible misfortune." says Malcolm, casting a sly grin at R'ghozitzunt. "These 8 tomes; if we are to collect them it would behoove you to tell us all you can about them, particularly a physical description. I would ask the same of you regarding the 8 mad men."

[Yukitsu]

I'm the keeper of the books of course. I lost track of my material form when the trinity came for the books, as I had not the power to oppose him. I suppose for now I'm but a toad, but I suppose later on I may be something more impressive. It seemed convenient at the time however. I and several others are wardens who have passed down those books and guarded sacred locations against the enemies from beyond history, and while none of us can in our living memories, recall with any exactitude what those tomes truly contain, we do know they hold the key to the survival of all mortals on the material.

After answering Ralam, he swivels an eye at Malcom, and says:

The books are an anthology of 8 books entitled "The mastery of the true arcane", and are then numbered 1 through 8. They are bound in unassuming red leather, with gold leafed pages and faded print.

8 mages of little repute, but significant personal wealth each bought an edition off of the swindlers and pillagers before I was able to act, and refuse to turn them over. Each is a specialist of the 8 arcane arts, and now, with those tomes, masters of them.

[Torgarn]

Damned arcanists. No offense meant Malcom. Do you have the location's of any of these tomes or their wielders, or should I break out my scrying pool.

We can locate some, though not all of them. Orthos, the abjurer has retreated to his mountainous castle, Arthur the conjurer has fled to the planes, sequestering himself beyond the reach of mortal man, Stonetooth, the evoker wields battles against his many enemies, Matilda, the enchantress has put her home city under her thrall, and lords over it, Gilbert, the transmuter, has gone beneath the tunnels and oppose her. We know not where the illusionist, the necromancer and the diviner have gone.

If none of you mind I'd say we go after the evoker first. Mages focused so strongly on battle are always the easiest to kill

"I don't know. I'd like to get my hands on the conjurer. If he believes his power can compete with mine, I'd like to summon an army of demons and devils for him to contend with."

If we are going by preference and not ease of defeat, then I'd prefer the necromancer. What they do is perversion.

[Halna LeGavilk]

Elrin looks up, smiling behind gray beard. He sat near the fireplace, reading a book, his tattered gray robes looking musty. "Personally, I think we should go after the Diviner, so he can't go around warning the others of when we are coming, and he's least likely to kill us, as long as we're smart about it."

[Hyperion]

Ouros kept his arms crossed and feet on the table.

"Hmmm, The diviner is the most likely one to alert them but the conjurer could easily assemble the others."

[Torgarn]

You all assume that they are companions though. It seems that the only one who might even be aware of the others is the diviner, which means Elrin is right, and we should go after him or her first.

[Halna LeGavilk]

Elrins nods. "And even if they aren't companions, I'm sure our attention will make them band together, so I say we go after the Diviner then Conjuror, limiting communications and transport. Disrupt them, you know?"

[goken04]

"Malcolm, I agree with Elrin. The Diviner, by his nature, poses the most immediate threat." growls R'ghozitzunt, his voice like gravel.

"Ah, very well; I can foresee that matters of my pride will have to be put aside for the greater good. The Diviner it is."

Zit pipes up, his voice as squeaky as always, "Whatever you say boss. Sounds like there'll be plenty of killing regardless."

"Yes, it seems so. Let us pray to the gods that it will be mostly on our side." Malcolm smiles.

"But frog, tell us. What evidence do you have that these tomes are as dangerous as you say they are? Or, even more, that you will be as careful with them as you claim. Frankly, how can we trust you that they are the real danger and not, for the sake of argument, you."

[Sinfonian]

Dean perks up at Malcolm's final comments. He had stayed silent while they were discussing targets, since he was not particularly big on tactical planning, preferring to allow the geniuses to take care of that arena. Money was rather less of a concern for him, it just seemed to be there whenever he needed it. He was much more concerned with interpersonal affairs and dealing in information. Because of that, the issue of trust and contacts is always important.

"I agree. Is there anything you can do to prove yourself the guardian of these books? And how much do you actually know about these mages? Do you even know who they are in particular? Or just that they exist?

[Torgarn]

Also, do you have any proof that they are using these powers for evil purposes, this whole thing feels like a set-up. How do we know your not just an arcanist seeking to use us to off your rivals for power?

[Yukitsu]

They aren't banding together. croaks the frog. They're all trying to steal another of the 8 for themselves, such that they can become even greater in power. They're tearing across the countryside with their shenanigans, and it's causing a lot of destruction amongst the innocent. You can observe them doing so if you want.

As for how trustworthy I am, I don't honestly know what can convince you. Perhaps, if you would get the first, I could prove that, at the very least, I have tended to the books before, and could have taken their power as my own long ago, as I am able to recite the opening verses. No more than that, however, as our order is not meant to wield that power. That the books will endanger the world? I do not know, I simply know that that knowledge has been passed down by my master, and his, and so forth since antiquity. For all I know, that knowledge is corrupted, or altered with time, but as it is worth the millions per book, I suspect that you would be happy, even if it turns out the books are useless.

"So they are all after the same thing. Well that makes it even easier on us."

Ouros put down his feet on the table and stood up. They would get to face a couple of interesting powerful wizards.

[Torgarn]

Ralam stands up rolling his head to get a kink out of his neck. Well, I was beginning to feel restless without a real callenge lately. Might as well take out some power hungry arcanists.

[Sinfonian]

"Perhaps it might be worth a try to see if we can use some of them against one another. Allow them to do some of the work for us. At the very least it might be a worthwhile distraction." Though not particularly well suited for the planning of most tactics, manipulation and psychology are things which Dean is more than familiar with.

[goken04]

Turning to Dean, Malcolm comments, "I think that suggestion is feasible, however, Elrin's proposition that we eliminate the Diviner and Conjurer immediately should take precedent. If we eliminate them first, it is more likely we shall be able to confuse the others and have them turn on one another."

"Perhaps we should begin tomorrow, when proper preparations may be made. In the meantime, I suppose myself and any others who wish to assist can spend our time scrying the diviner and perhaps the evoker to confirm that what the toad says is true."

[Halna LeGavilk]

Elrin cracked his neck, the old bones popping. "You youngin's do what you want. I'm always ready."

[Yukitsu]

Well, make your decision. I'll be back at this time every day until you've decided to not take the job, or have acquired the books.

[Hyperion]

"Well the diviner most likely is making sure nobody can track him and would probably see us coming. But it's a worth a try to see what we can find out. So can we check the scene of the crime or at least have the little clues that you found out?" Ouros take a look at his psicrystal floating around his head and back at the toad before it departed.

[Torgarn]

I'll be returning to my quarters. He goes to his room and steps through the doorway, which is attuned via his gate key to his demiplane.

Elrin looks back down at his book and sighs. Going up, to his room, he meditates for several hours, drawing connections in his mind.

Malcolm takes out a silver mirror from his pack and lays it on the table. With a few gestures and mumbled words, he casts Greater Scrying on the mirror.

Trying to scry the Diviner. Will DC 38. He can use his darkvision, see invisibility, and arcane sight through the mirror, as per RAW. The Diviner should get a +5 to his save since I only have Secondhand information about him.

[Hyperion]

Ouros took this moment to consult his mind to find possibly an answer. He concentrates a bit and expanded his mind for a moment for ten minutes while he manifested psionic divination.

"Which way should we follow to find the tome held by the diviner?"

"Huh. That's strange." Says Malcolm as he receives the block from the Diviner. "Very well."

Malcolm casts Greater Scrying yet again, this time focused on the Evoker, hoping to see this destruction the frog had mentioned.

DC 38 yet again. And they should get the Secondhand Information +5 bonus.

"Hmm... I see." Malcolm says, as he looks into his scrying mirror. He ends the spell with an act of will.

"Now for the conjurer." He says to himself as he casts Greater Scrying on the Conjurer.

You know the drill by now.

Interesting unperturbed Ralam once again plunges his mind into the pool trying to see the necromancer and what he is using his newfound power to do.

There's a sudden loud bang, and a large cloud of smoke appears, in the center floats an orb, with eye stalks off the sides. Smiling like a maniac, and laughing crazily.
"Heya Ralam! What did I miss?"

Well, Drag, we have a new job, run of the mill arcanists full of themselves who have gotten their hands on something larger then themselves. You know the usual.

"Bippity boppity BAM! Time to turn some idiots into rabbits and eat them for dinn dinn!"

Ouros rearranges his mind for a moment and decided to find out anything he could about the diviner.

After the frog has departed, Dean sets about his own particular routine before heading out to investigate. First he tries to call to mind any knowledge of these books from his wide-ranging travels.

He then retires briefly to a Mage's Magnificent Mansion (replicated through his Shadowmaster feat) for some privacy as he prepares for what may be coming (boring routine buffs):Assume divine focus for the day (Takes 1 hour).

Having completed the boring part of the day, he leaves the extradimensional mansion and returns to the guild hall to wait for the others to return to share the information they've uncovered. Once they have a better idea of what's ahead of him, he can use his people skills to try to get more information, but he really needs an idea of where to start.

While waiting, he'll amuse himself to pass the time by convincing any passerby in the guildhall that the sun has suddenly and inexplicably turned green. He'll take 10s on any Bluff checks (via Naberius) for a 98.

Once everyone has assembled, as he does each day, he'll lay out a meal (Heroes' Feast) for all to share as they share information.

Elrin walked into the room, and simply watched Dean convince random travelers into thinking the room turned green. He laughed for a bit, then continued reading.

Ouros come to the table and joined in the eating of the feast as his hand grabbed a thigh from a roasted duck on the table.
"So how shall we proceed?"

[goken04]

"That is a good question." growls R'ghozitzunt.

"Indeed it is, R'ghozitzunt." Malcolm agrees. "My attempts to scry the Diviner and the Conjurer were both somehow blocked. The evoker appears to be storming a rainbow-colored castle. Would anyone happen to know where that would be?"

"Regardless, I will be summoning a chaos beast today to serve us against whichever caster we decide to attack. Give me tomorrow to prepare, and I can have an entire army of monsters and fiends ready to serve us in this endeavor. I believe this would be the wisest choice."

After waiting for his ally's responses. Malcolm prepares a Magic Circle Against Evil. He then takes 20 minutes to take 10 on his Spellcraft check, guaranteeing a success, to fortify his circle. He then spends 10 minutes casting Lesser Planar Binding and calling forth a Chaos Beast. When the Chaos Beast arrives, he will cast Dominate Monster on it (Will DC 40). Assuming that's successful, he will command the creature "Agree to serve me, to the best of your ability, following the intent and letter of my words for the next 25 days."

Drag teleports into the Guild hall.

A puff of smoke and a loud bang appearing before him.
"BAM! S'APPENING EVERYONE?"

[Halna LeGavilk]

Elrin nods to Drag and says, "Hello." before turning to his compatriots, and sipping at some wine. "Well, the diviner is probably Persephone, some local diviner or somesuch. She's been impossible to trace so far, so I think she used her power to prevent people from following her."

[Sinfonian]

"That's a decent lead. Good work! Any other information about this Persephone? What do you mean by "local"? Do you know of anyone who knows her? Anything more than just a name would be most excellent."

[Torgarn]

I apologize Ralam says as he enters the room, But despite my power, my scrying attempts have failed. Have any of you had better luck?

[Hyperion]

Ouros waves his hand at Drag. "No conclusive result on my part but at least we have a name now. The rest is just a question of putting the pieces together."

Perhaps the toad will know where the rainbow castle is, if the Evoker is the only one we have located, perhaps we should take what we can get and go after him.

"Having a start on the diviner is very good. But if we know that the evoker is currently involved with the rainbow-colored castle, that's a much stronger lead. He's not very far away, and who knows if we'll have another chance at him anytime soon. I agree that the diviner would the first target of choice, but I think we've got an opportunity with the evoker right now. Even if it were to just be that we go, get information, and get out, that would be productive." He hesitates a moment and then adds as an incentive (Bluff Check taking 10 for another 98), "There's also sure to be excellent punch and the most wonderful pie, beyond that of your wildest imagination. We should hurry before it's gone"

[Halna LeGavilk]

Elrin chuckles. "Well, I don't eat. So, there you go."

[Yukitsu]

I think I heard someone talking about me. Says a fairly ruffled pelican that is limping into your room. I apoligize about the change in form, but I had to abandon the prior when this damndable bird tried to eat me. I rather regret that I put up a brilliant defence, and seems to have broken its leg, which unfortunately, is now my leg. But enough about me, have you come to any kind of decision?

[Hyperion]

"You are all over the place aren't you? well I can safely say that we are taking on the job. Would it be possible to inspect the scene of the crime? Seeing what happened in the past might give us more details about what's going on." Ouros waved at the pelican while his psicrystal gyrated on top of his head.

[Yukitsu]

I'd have to clear that with my masters, but uh, well, they don't know I'm still alive precisely. I don't know if I feel comfortable going back there in this state, especially when they think I died trying to defend those books. Can we at least wait until they've done with my funeral? It would be rather awkward going back there during it I should think, and I don't really know when they would hold it. I hopped out of there before anyone could get a good detect on me.

[Sinfonian]

"Before we get too far, who are you, and who are your masters?"

[Yukitsu]

You know all of those stories about secret guardianships tasked with guarding the world? Well the truth about those is you don't make up a name for them because it in all honesty shouldn't come up. If you ever have heard of the name of a secret sect, I suspect they aren't a very good one. Similar to names really. It's like asking the king to reveal the names of his agents just because he asks you to catch a petty thief. I'm fair close to desperate to get those books back, but not at the cost of our order becoming public knowledge, as it would not be long until we were best upon by the armies of the world for those very books I require, and would then be forced to use them ourselves.

[KingOfLaughter]

"I MUST TELL THE WORLD OF THIS DISCOVERY! WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB! WHO WANTS CANDY?" Drag waves his eye stalks randomly as he speaks, "So shall we get to devouring evil minions or are we going to chit chat and drink tea?"

See? Listen to the giant laughing floating eyeball. A little less conversation, a little more action please.

[Torgarn]

As much as I believe in thinking before action, I must concur. Lets take the evoker out now, hard and fast.

[Hyperion]

"Well with no access to the current scene of the crime, taking out the ones that we know might be the best idea." Plus they could probably scry and analyze the tomes to find out more about the other locations.

[Halna LeGavilk]

Elrin stands and cracks his neck. "Alright, well, I'm ready to go."

"Very well. I could do much more given a day or two to prepare, but it seems the needs of the Rainbow Castle are dire and I do not think an evoker will be too much trouble for all of us." says Malcolm, motioning to R'ghozitzunt, Zit, and the Chaos Beast he has just called. "Shall we Teleport, then?"

[Halna LeGavilk]

"Well, we can stay for a bit, if you want. It doesn't bother me at all. But, yes, I suppose that the Rainbow Castle does need rescuing. Shall you cast the spell? I don't believe I know it."

[goken04]

"Hmm.. let me see..." Malcolm says. He lists off everyone's name, except the Chaos Beast, whom he just calls the Chaos Beast, seeming to count them as he does. "There's one too many of us for me to Teleport. R'ghozitzunt, you'll have to Teleport there by yourself, you saw my mirror when I scried on them, correct?"

"I did. Very well."

"Speaking of, since I only saw one part of the Rainbow Castle and don't otherwise know where it is, I'll be Teleporting us into the midst of battle. R'ghozitzunt, try to get as far behind their lines as is possible. Prepare yourselves, now gather round and hold hands--or tentacles as the case may be."

When everyone is holding hands, Malcolm will cast Greater Teleport to Teleport us as far behind the Evoker's lines as is possible given my previous Scrying. R'ghozitzunt will ready an action to Greater Teleport himself at the same time to the same place. Assuming we land in Initiative order, Malcolm will be casting Nerveskitter. In fact, if we're rolling for initiative, it's pretty much always safe to assume Malcolm will be casting Nerveskitter.

[Sinfonian]

"Before we walk into a fight with spells flying, perhaps it might be useful to see if we can get any information from this evoker without hostility first. He should certainly know more than that messenger was willing to tell us. He may even know something about the other seven mages or books. If we get a chance to speak with him before a fight, or to take him alive after, I suggest we do so. If not, we're no worse off than we are now. Just a thought." With that, he joins hands and readies himself for the slightly disorienting feeling that always accompanies instantaneous transportation.

Elrin simply smiles as he joins hands, preparing himself for a fight.

Elrin prepares an action to manifest Bite of the Warebear as soon as he lands

You gather together and hold hands in a circle, imagining the destination point, you feel space wrap around you before giving way to... A large bubble made of force, and the sounds of a little wind elemental plucking away at a small fiddle. The dwarf evoker is looking at you lot, and appears to be in relatively deep thought. He's in a prepared caster stance, like he's ready to cast at a moments notice.

Now now, don't go underestimatin' me. I may be an evoker, but I'm a wizard nonetheless. I'm not going to be fallin' for the cheap kills. He tips out his bottle of "liquor" which appears to be filled with water. The legendary heroes huh? I can see how you deserve the right to get cocky from time to time. Even though I've got the jump on ya, I don't have the means to beat you here. I'll be retreating for now I suspect.

He turns to face his army of elementals, which is far more vast than your scry would have predicted, and says Pack it in boys, we're done here for now. He then slowly turns and starts carefully walking away.

Thinking quickly, Dean does what he can so that they might not miss their chance. He makes a rushed attempt at a diplomatic solution, drawing upon the powers of persuasion granted by the vestige beyond the veil of reality to get the evoker to listen.

"Hold on a moment! Perhaps it could be of benefit if you could stay a moment and speak with us."

Standard action Diplomacy check (via Naberius, so no penalty). He'll take 10 (again via Naberius) for a total of 68. Should be good enough for him to be at least Helpful to us.

"GET BACK HERE! I WANT TO USE YOUR INTESTINES FOR MY NEW SASH!"

Ouros looked at the barrier and didn't even say a word and his brain and body moved at superspeed, every single moment appeared like an eternity for him, moments so small in time that they couldn't be identify by mere eyesight.
