Attention, English-speaking world: Never, ever use an apostrophe to make a noun plural. Not even if the noun is a family name. "I saw the Bateses at the store" is correct. So is "The Smiths are throwing a party." Writing "I saw the Bates's" or "The Smith's are throwing a party" makes you look like a dimwit, and it incurs both my contempt and the wrath of Conan the Grammarian.
I attempted to visualize Conan the Grammarian and my brain promptly exploded and melted down.
I was wondering if anyone here would like to take a shot at rendering their own imagination of Conan the Grammarian. I can't promise I'd ever use it. Think of it more as a think piece or proof-of-concept. I'm curious what images it puts in people's minds, that's all.
Respectfully,
Brian P.
