But yeah, it's a great movie, one of my favorite action flicks.

Its only like the best action film of all time! How are you just now finding this out?

(P.S. DH2 and 3 are both fun flicks as well - not quite as good as the first but still quality stuff IMHO)

Yeah, Die Hard rules. It has my favorite cop in it! No, not john Mclain, Carl Winslow!

Yippy Kai Yay, Melon Farmer!

If I recall correctly at one point TV changed that line to: Yippie Kai Yay Mister Falcon! :smalltongue:

And yes, Die Hard is a good movie.

If you want to see it again watch Steven Segal in Under Seige. :smalltongue:

It was also a fairly significant movie because it established the "One dude, trapped with a bunch of enemies and he has to take them out" genre. I mean, movies like Air Force One are basically just Die Hard in Plane.

QFT.

It's the only movie I watch EVERY christmas for the past few years. It's... I don't know why, but it's just so great. It also gave a great jump to Willis career (as far as I know he was like the last choice for it, after Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Seagal... all defied the offer and then took it and the rest is history...
...
Oh dammit, now I have to go and watch that movie again, thanks a lot.

On an off note, I ctually like the German catch phrase better than the English one but meh.

Yeah, Willis wasn't an action star at all before Die Hard. He was best known for Moonlighting.

Knocked it out of the park, though.

Whats the german catchphrase? Translated if possible. Also, I have the trilogy on dvd, I think it has extended footage. I think my favorite part is how many time willis passes through the construction area full of pinup porn.

I think I'm one of like three men on the planet who doesn't go all mushy for die hard.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad movie. I think the thing about the movie that bugs me isn't actually the movie, but rather that every person who has ever seen it just immediately goes 110% full on raging fanboi.

Meh. It is historically important in the American Action Movie field and was the prototype that many other films attempted to emulate (and for that reason I feel that it's worth watching if you haven't by now).

If it's on TV I'll leave it as my background noise as I do other things and I jokingly put it and Gremlins as the "top two Christmas movies", but it's hardly my favorite (then again, action movies as a stand-alone genre don't do a lot for me - sci-fi/action and other hybrids do better). Good one-liners, memorable villain (but then, Alan Rickman is just glorious as a villain in pretty much anything), and a decent sequel or two puts it pretty high on the action hierarchy, though.

My joke about how Hollywood movies are pitched goes something like this.

After Die Hard, you had movies pitched as "Die Hard on a plane!", Die Hard on a train!", etc., until you eventually reach, "Die Hard on a bus!"

Then for a while, you get "Speed on a plane!", "Speed on a train!", etc. until you eventually reach the ultimate pitch: "Speed in a skyscraper!"

Whats the german catchphrase?

"Yippie-ay-yay, Schweinebacke!" IIRC.

Translated if possible.

"Yippie-ay-yay, pigcheek!". Doesn't make too much sense in english, but back in the 80s "Schweinebacke" was one of the harsher cusswords one could use and still get broadcasted on national TV.

See, I would go the other way on that one. It's a pretty good movie (for its genre and time) but I really don't find it a very enjoyable movie. It's just kind of flat. Its something I could tolerate if I was with friends who really wanted it on or something, but if I was by myself I would rather have the TV off than have it running.

Different strokes for different folks, there's not really any questioning the impact it had on that genre of movies though.

Die Hard was the first movie to establish that even a team of bad ass criminals NEEDED THEIR NERD.

That and the awesome one liners.

Then, you should also try The Last Boy Scout. Amazing one liners.
"This is the '90s. You can't just walk up and slap a guy, you have to say something cool first"

or

"Well just once, I would like to hear you scream, in pain. "
"Play some rap music. "

Ah, thanks, I was looking for something like that. It's probably a personal thing but the German Yippie Yah Yei just rolls of my tongue easier. Also, I don't mind swearing in movies (except if they do it for the sake of doing it) but I just prefer the more original German Schweinebacke. Opposed to Englisch we don't really have a curse like f..ornication with such a strong meaning (we have our own share of courses mind you but I don't think anything which has the same cultural meaning as f***. So... yeah, if he said 'Mutterficker' which would be literal I think it would have sounded just stupid.

We're getting of topic here but another note on the German version: I'm still annoyed the changed Gruber to a... Russian, I think, some Eastern European. But it was very common practice to localize a lot back in the days.

Die Hard is a worthy of all the praise it gets for a number of reasons:

1. The bad guys aren't losers or morons but are actually a threat. And each bad guy is a threat, not just the "boss."

2. It has that classic setup of an underappreciated male proving his worth as a hero. That resonates with any man.

3. Classic one-liners and action sequences which still hold up as fantastic after all these years. I've seen tons of modern action films with less than half the imagination.

TheArsenal
2011-03-30, 10:34 AM
I liked it because of its creative set use, Huge amounts of tension with only 12(14?) bad guys, and fun one liners.

There was none of that choreography crap that I hate so much where the characters enter "Anime fight" land. It was real, and all the impacts where real.

Further evidence of Die Hard supremacy via one liners:

"I'm Agent Johnson, this is Special Agent Johnson."

"This is agent Johnson. No, the other one."

"All right, listen up guys. 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except the four a-holes coming in the rear in standard two-by-two cover formation."

"Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way... so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life."

"Nine million terrorists in the world and I gotta kill one with feet smaller than my sister."

"Hey babe, I negotiate million dollar deals for breakfast. I think I can handle this Eurotrash." (is shot moments later)

"C'mon baby, come ta' papa, I'll kiss ya' ****in' dalmatian.

"Oh! And the quarterback is TOAST!"

"Who's driving this car, Stevie Wonder?"

"Only John McClane can drive somebody that crazy."

Die Hard is easily among my favorite movies. And usually the big budget action blockbusters don't do it for me. But Die Hard nails it.

I didn't like Die Hard 2 (Die Harder?) or Die Hard with a Vengeance nearly as much, though. So let your expectations go way down again if you want to enjoy those two so soon after seeing the first one. Otherwise you might be disappointed.

DHwaV is pretty good, but in it's own way. DH2 is just an uninspired copy of DH. Not bad but not great.

I saw Die Hard 2: Die Harder (best sequel title ever) before I saw the first. Thought 2 was amazing, I was 12 at the time so things did easily amuse me, then saw 1 and saw the light.

For me it mixes the right amount of ham and cheese with blood and guts, add Alan Rickman, and a touch of mystery as to what they are doing and you have popcorn movie fun. A lot of "popcorn entertainment" today just throws the visuals at you or some explosions, die hard did it with the right style and enough of a story to make you care about the explosions and visuals. Not enough popcorn flicks do that now.
