Let's assume you are in melee and want to retreat slowly, but still attack your foe while doing so. You could perform your Standard Attack first and then use your Move Action to move away from your opponent in s traight line, without provoking an attack of oppotrunity, couldn't you?

(Moving away first and then taking a ready action to strike at the enemy coming after you sounds a bit klunky to me).

Not against enemies with reach. They would still get the AoO when you move out of their "second" square threatened.

As this is not a full retreat (double move action) nor a 5ft step, AoO still applies.

You could have a tanky PC hold them off while the rest of the party retreats though. That's the way they do it in the movies

If you don't have reach, you can only attack if you're 5' away from an enemy. Which lets your opponent AoO you when you use your move action.

The only way to get out without provoking is 5' step or full withdraw. (Or tumble)

What a pity. :smallfrown:

I guess Fighting Defensely and 5-foot Steps will have to do the job then.

Tumbling is also an option, for some people... fighting retreat with style, cartwheel to freedom!

Yes, tumbling is also an option, for acrobatty characters. But just to make sure, doesn't it eat up your movement points quite a bit?

Regardless, a speed enhancement wouldn't hurt. The spell's name is expeditious retreat, after all :smalltongue:

tumbling halves your move.

expeditious retreat with tumbling gives you another 15' of movement.

There are plenty of other options, including not being seen

You can’t execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies. and ducking behind cover (even soft cover) as you move

You can’t execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you. or teleporting away so that you relocate without moving.

tumbling halves your move.
It can halve your movement rate, but it doesn't have to; you just bump up the DC by +10 to Tumble at normal speed.

tumbling halves your move.

You can choose which squares you want to tumble through. You can also tumble and move at full speed with a -10 penalty.

Most meatbag classes can get Tumble as a class skill by spending a feat on Martial Study (any Desert Wind maneuver) or using the Skilled City Dweller ACF to swap it for Ride (Cityscape Web Enhancement #3 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a)).

That's a really cool list of replaceable skills.

Or, you could trip your persuers. Whenenver they get into range... have your fightery types..use Trip attacks. Halberds help for the range part. Disarm attempts could help.... Drop some Caltrops if you want to carry some of those around.. Tanglefoot bags?

you could stand 10 - 15 feet away,.. and if they move into your Threatened Range Trip them... and spend your attacks either attacking them or when they attempt to get back up, use the AoO to trip them ... and on your turn keep alternating betwenn 5' steps or full movment. Droping Caltrops and Throwing tangle foot bags?
