The spells Awaken, Awaken Construct and Awaken Undead can make for some very interesting characters/NPCs.

A couple of points bug me, though, about how to stat the newly awakened creatures:

No LA or CR increase is listed...if you were to eyeball it, what would you say is fair?

In the case of non-intelligent beings that are Awakened (constructs, undead, trees etc.), do they get retrospective feats? How about skill points?

Any thoughts welcomed. - T

All creatures with an intelligence score gains feats and skills as normal. I always rule that they get retroactive feat/skill gain.

I'd leave zombies and skeletons at +0, because they lose almost all their actual racial attributes for a few mediocre powers. CR wise, I think they would remain the same, too. Note that the Karnathi undead in Eberron are slightly tougher and lose many of the weaknesses the conventional mindless undead have, so they are CR 3.
