View Full Version : If Belkar had magic.

Now that I am convinced (from another thread) that Belkar could prepare and cast spells if he were to have an item that granted Owl's Wisdom, I pose the following question;

Getting rid of the "rule of funny" that causes Belkar to wear a white shirt when his Wis is increased; what, if any, Ranger spells (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Ranger_Spell_List) would he actually prepare.

I have a feeling that he would consider most of these spells to either be for wussies and cheaters, or else take the fun out of the fight. He might get Entangle just to mess with people, but I don't know if any other spells fit his personality.

Any other thoughts?

Well, PH provides us with:
Jump (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/jump.htm);
Barkskin (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/barkskin.htm);
Bear's Endurance (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/bearsEndurance.htm);
Cat's Grace (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/catsGrace.htm) and
Freedom of Movement (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/freedomOfMovement.htm) (to escape grappling horses and the like).

I'm sure there are many more Belkar-ish spells in other books!

Jump.

When he hit 9th caster level (level 18 ranger), at least. Then it would be +30, which is better than his +20 ring. Until then, Jump wouldn't matter, as it wouldn't stack with his ring.

Outside of Jump, which I believe his ring covers well, I don't know that he would use the rest.

I agree that he SHOULD go with the rest of them to become a Tasmanian Devil, but I think he might be more likely to just go without all that for the bragging rights.

Speak with animals, and convince the Allosaurus to become best friends forever.

Heck, Speak With Animals just to taunt one and start a fight. Belkar could be an anti-ranger. He could organize all the beavers to cut down a forest so that the bears can build him a palace.

The only use for Speak with Animals would be to talk to the Scruffinater (sic?).

He would also probably get Magic Fang (greater as well) for Mr. Scruffy, Snare for Miko-like situations, and Animal Growth. Mr. Scruffy is now a panther.

Could he get his Wis high enough to cast those?

But, yes, he would turn Scruffy into Battle-Cat (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/77/299945-182238-battle-cat_super.jpg).

His wis is somewhere from 7 (Owl's wisdom to cast spells) to 9 ("Penalty"), so a +6 item will set him at least at 13. Enough to cast most ranger spells since they go up to 4th level.
Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't touch anything but PF in a long time.

I could kind of see him taking a cure spell for something like "Not having to be touched by Durkon anymore" or something like that, endure elements for the same reason (Desert). Magic Fang is a definite, anything to make his daggers more painful. And Resist Energy, I don't know your choices as I'm not a DnD buff, but he's probably sick of V's explosive runes.

Definately Longstrider. With all the running away the party has had to do over their adventuring career (it is their oldest and most reliable strategy :smallwink:), I can't imagine him not using it, especially since it adds to his jump modifier (by having a faster movement speed).

Any possibility Rangers can learn spells? He seemed rather fond of his Wand of Dispel Clothing (minor reference to Dragon Magazine strip).

Animal Growth for sure and magic fang. Anything to make Mr. Scruffy as much a SSGoW as him

Simple answer = If Belkar had magic we would all be dead right now, with chips where our brains use to be.

Come on this is Belkar we are talking about, he's not going to use some lame speak with plants, he's going to be growing spikes (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/spikeGrowth.htm) everywhere.

Heh, I get it.Oh yes, it's quite an instrument. It even got Elan all shirtless and uncomfortable.

Like Uncle Spikeleaf said "when in doubt, make everything around you lethally dangerous"

Does Roy still have Belkars Ring of Jumping? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0430.html) I would suspect that Belkar would take it off the dead body BUT Roy has been seen doing some pretty darn impressive (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0686.html) jumps (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0689.html) since he came back.

Specifically the Jump onto the worm just screams +20 to me

agreed
it could just be possible that belkar is in fact very wise but also stupid so he does not know when he is casting spells

Endure Elements is a sure choice- "It sure is hot in here." Just turned into "Now I can wear a sweater while I watch Roy sweat. Haha!"

And he's going to die and then go back in time and become the Monster! But the Monster will die soon, too, so he really will take his last breath before the end of the year.

Not that I believe that it will happen, but this would be a way for Belkar to stay in the story. He can stay with OotS for the next fifty-plus years if he wants, as long as he time-travels to the current year to have his last breath.
