The air surrounding you fairly hums with the residue of magic, an aftereffect of the spell that brought you to this place. A quick glance reveals that you are in a small room, devoid of any life save for yourself. The sound of dripping water can be heard faintly, and the stone walls are slick with moisture. In complete defiance of logic, a torch is already lit, resting in a sconce near the room's single door.

First I'll conduct a cursory examination of the room (search check), then I'll walk to the door, examine it and search it for traps (taking 20), then assuming I don't find anything I'll listen at the door to try and hear what's going on on the other side.

I'll make a listen check to see if I can hear anything on the other side. If i don't hear anything then I'll put my face in it and move forward until i'm just far enough to see out the other side.

You see a 5' wide corridor, heading south.

After 5' and 25', the corridor splits east. It ends in a T-junction after 35'.

I'll take the torch from the room (I'll check to see if it's an everburning torch, i.e. see if it gives off heat) and cast Mage Armor on myself.
Then I'll walk to the first branch in the corridor trying to be as quiet as possible. I'll have the torch in my left hand and my sword in my right. When I reach the branch I'll poke my head around the corner and see where it leads.

I'll run through the door (giving the torch an AoO) and hold it closed it behind me. Then I'll cast Mage Armor on myself.

How does XP gain work in this, do I get XP for avoiding or escaping encounters (like say, by running away or sneaking around) or only for killing/defeating them?

Defeating gives XP. You do get the chance to 'rebuild' with the next floor's stats if you get there, though.

Ok, cool. So does the torch swing an AoO at me as I run away? Or can I take a withdraw action and avoid it?

Ah, ok. Friggin torch.

So I'm outside the door, which is closed, having taken 4+3=7 damage and have just cast mage armor on myself. Right?

Assuming that's correct I'll use my scroll of CLW on myself, light a Sunrod and try sneaking down to the branch in the corridor as I had originally intended (though without the torch obviously).

Also: Does my greatcoat stack with my Mage Armor as it does with light armor?

As you turn around, you see writing on the wall. It says:

April Fool's!

You recover the HP for free, and a torch appears in your hand.

From the doorway: A 5' wide passageway south. There are splits east at 5' and 25', and it ends in a T-junction after 35'.

After 20', there's a north/south split.

After 30', a door north.

The corridor extends past 40', can you see any further?

No, My torch's light only extends to 40ft and I have no darkvision or low-light vision.

I'll sneak to the North/South split and look down both corridors (as well as looking further down the east-running corridor).

At the very edge of your vision, you see anothr north/south split.

In both directions, the corridor goes 20' before turning right.

To the south, there's a door east after 15'.

Can you describe the door? Any keyholes, gap at the bottom etc?
If there are any such things I'll try to look through into the room.

Then I'll make another listen check to see if I can hear anything else inside the room.

Zazori:Entangled (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/conditionSummary.htm#entangled) does a bit more than that. He has a chance to lose any spell he casts, and he takes a penalty to attack rolls and dexterity.

If you think what ever information you have is useful use it, but it just might be wrong.

You see a 5' wide corridor.
After 5' there is an East intersection.
After 25' there is an East intersection.
After 35' there is an West/East intersection.

There is a human wearing a chain shirt and holding a longsword standing behind a beast with patchy dark fur that covers its unhealthy shrunken black skin in some places. Open sores dot its hide and a feral, catlike head glances with it's blank eyes at the wall in front of it.

If on the other side of the door there's a 5' wide corridor leading south which branches off east after 5' and 25 feet then I'll go to the second branch and look around the corner.

EDIT: I've changed my spell selection.
