Our theme this month is...
La Mer
The Ocean. Covering approximately 71% of the Earth's surface. A source of life. Our theme this month welcomes any and all marine-related artwork. What would our favorite stick figures be doing on a boat at sea? Beneath the sea? Beachside? Remember: the keyword is "Marine".

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Sea Avatar (any creation of 120x120 or smaller)
Best Under the Sea (Anything depicting an underwater/submarine scene)
Best At Sea (Anything depicting a scene on a ship, boat, raft, swimming, or otherwise above the water)
Best Seaside (Anything depicting a port, beach, or land-based seaside scene)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)
And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as is tradition, I'll be giving out the Ruki's Choice Award for whatever entry I personally like the most from any category.

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by May 1st at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in. Additionally, if it's your first time entering the contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry"

3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Sea Avatar
Haruki at the beach

4. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

5. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

6. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

7. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

8. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

Good luck!

Fine? as far as i know it got two OotSatars. So frickin' what? Some contests have only had one entry in a category, or none at all. A contest doesn't have to reach 15 pages to be fine. Like I said, some don't even make it to 4 pages of entries. Sometimes entries slack, but that doesn't mean the entries nor the contest itself are of any lesser quality - Hell, some of the higher-paged contests are made up mostly of old avatar dumps.

There were three contests in a row that had 5 or fewer pages, including post-award commentary, which are nonetheless looked upon fondly...
Which is why the rule about "nothing that has been previously entered" came up, right?Nah, that was there from the start. There was one contest that VT expected to be particularly dump-prone that he placed a once-off limitation on.

I've recently been enchanted by the idea of seafaring dwarves and fantasy worlds in the World Wars era. Inspired, I made this:

Best at Sea
To War Together
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/7640/togethertowar.png

A young elf flyer on his bronze dragon and a veteran dwarf captain on his battleship. On the route to the Great War, a brief meeting, never to see each other again.

I first intended to put metal armor on the dragon, but that would cover up too much of the frills and be bulky around the head, so I went with just a fancy saddle. Also, this is a bit of early WWI, so armored flyers would actually be a bit anachronistic...

Also, in case you wonder, the elf flyer is holding a Tommy Gun in his right hand. Not exactly WWI, but I needed a good-looking submachine gun for some confident waving.

I just finished another Fantasy World Wars picture for this, but, sadly, Imageshack doesn't seem to work at the moment, so it'll have to wait until later.

If a Real Avatarist wishes to draw an avatar from scratch, they must first invent the Universe.

However, a real avatarist first has to make a paradox clone of him-/herself to send back in time so that it can become him/her and invent the Universe where he/she can build a computer with only an assortment of pens and a piece of paper to draw on, on which he/she then will code his picture on, pixle by pixel, in machine language. Predator
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/3140/predatorj.png

Even in these times, a kraken remains a menaces of the deep. Often unable to sink a surface warship, they're still the worst nightmare of any submarine captain, being able of outmanouvering his ship and cracking its hull open with its powerful tentacles. The rare chance to feed them a torpedo is nothing any captain would pass on, and the legend will be recounted in the harbour taverns for years to come.

Where man moves out, nature takes over. When the Haffborg Channel through the Drakenback Ridge was completed by the dwarves in 1859, ship traffic through the dangerous Sallowthorn Straight ceased, and the lighthouses that had helped uncounted numbers of ships to safely pass during foggy nights were abandoned. In time, however, several of them found new inhabitants willing to take up residence within their rusting walls, or, in the case of this roc family, on top of it.

But it works so: good job teddy

It lives by the ocean and hunts fish (and smaller whales), so I, more or less consciously, made it look more like a gull than ordinary. It's sort of a cross-over between them both, actually. The wings, for example, aren't especially gull-like, and the beaks are certainly made for ripping the meat of their prey (I mean, how would those hatchlings otherwise get anything out from that shark).

If you go by the way Rocs popularily are depicted, there is no way they can be diving birds. I can't help but wonder how they intended them to catch all that huge fish they need to eat every day if they aren't capable of diving... :smallconfused:

Bald eagles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bald_Eagle#Diet), swamp harriers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swamp_Harrier#Diet), osprey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osprey#Diet), fish eagles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthyophaga), white-bellied sea eagle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-bellied_Sea_Eagle#Feeding) and various sea eagles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_eagle) manage pretty well.
Note that, I'd imagine, rocs largely feed on whales, dolphins and large species of shark, which generally tend to hang around in shallows or come right up to the surface.

I'd still imagine that those are more striking the water with their talons rather than diving into it...

Well, you're probably correct. I still like the idea of a gull-roc carrying sharks in it's beak as if they were small herrings, though. :smallwink:

Where do you get the idea that a roc would have to dive, though? That's pretty much exactly how I'd imagine it hunting - like a sea eagle.
I can see it as something like a sheerwater, though. Those things can get nasty...

first, i hadn't remembered that you had made the dreadnaught until i was about halfway done with my aircraft dragon carrier.... and i realized that my entry probably just lost some originality...oh well....to address the ballista issue, an aircraft dragon carrier's strength comes not from the onboard guns, but from the aircraft dragons it carries. and remember, blue dragons use lightning as well. and my reds will melt your cannons!!! Meh, originality is for whimps anyway. :smallwink::smalltongue:

Pre-Dreadnoughts weren't especially heavy on the electronics, so I think I'm pretty safe there. They lack any form of AA protection, though, so I guess I can't do anything but hope that my steel is thicker than your fire is hot until I can bring in more dragons myself. :smallwink:

I just remembered that I do actually have a sub too (if it managed to survive that octopedical beast). Great War/WWII (I can't really decide, but it leans toward the latter) subs weren't really the pinacle of stealth technology, but they're still tricky to find below the surface without specific equipment.

EDIT:
Looks like time isn't at my side. I'll probably not get time to realise my idea.

The highest point is usually not the antenna itself, but rather the mast it's fastened on. Also, dragonfirelightning doesn't apply the normal rules of conductivity (hence why it travels in a straight line), so, uh, perhaps it's a better idea to shoot it through the windows in hope of hitting the equipment firsthand instead...

Yes, I know, this is stupid.

Zefir
2011-05-05, 08:11 AM
That depends on the judges. For example see the last contest about Toon. There are still vots from some Judges missing.

Normaly it comes in the mid of the month after the contest ended up to the end of this mont. Means for you mid May up to end of May.

It also depends on the number of enrys the more the longer they need.

Haruki-kun

As Zefir said. Usually, at the end of the month I'll announce thewinners for the last one, close the current one, and start the new one. But Toon Oldies got stuck a bit there for a couple of issues, the main one being that I haven't made trophies yet (normally I'd have no problem making them, but it's been a busy week). I'll get to that before the weekend, hopefully.

Also, to whoever made the trophies, I must say that I love the Best Rookie awards. Just spot on. :smallwink:

Inigo's idea, but thanks. :smalltongue:

(Now if only the evaluation process wouldn't take more than a month each time... >_> )

Well, it's a bit of a set thing... Month begins, contest opens, contest closes, contest results are announced. I COULD try to rush it a bit more, but... there's not much difference, really. And it's good for the judges to have more time, anyway.

I've never said anything that contradicts this. However, as you can't apply for the Ruki's Choice cathegory, like every other cathegory, it becomes a semi-cathegory at best.

Also, I needed a way of justifying my choice of words. :smalltongue:

You can't apply for "Best Overall" either, believe me - I've tried. :smalltongue:

True, but I wouldn't need to argue for wether to exclude it or not, as that wouldn't change the verity of my statement (although it would become somewhat strange...), so I could safely skip that. :smallwink:

{{scrubbed}}Have you looked at them all? There's plenty past IAs with fewer and/or lower quality entries. And seriously, is this necessary? :smallannoyed:

No, it was an emotional reaction I should never have posted. Sorry.

I do believe I have seen them all.

Last contest looked ok to me. And I've been here for ten years. And really, round exam time, what do you expect?

Don't worry Elder Tosfu I think I lost a contest once too. Wailing heard for miles.
