The SRD lists that you can get the item you want from it as a move action that doesn't provoke AOO's, but many people when discussing it say that it is a free action. Has it been errata'd?

not as far as I know, or have sen... we always run it as a move action. there are few item that provide free actions when drawing other items from them... a belt of potions from a Forgotten Realms book, swift action for Wand Bracer from Dungeonscape, a few, rare, others.

but not a free action for Handy Haversack.

There's one way in which you might get items out as a free action: if they're weapons and you have Quick Draw (or in combination with a regular move). The properties of Heward's Handy Haversack and scabbards are the same: a move action to draw, without provoking any AoOs.

Draw or Sheathe a Weapon

Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like objects carried in easy reach, such as wands. If your weapon or weapon-like object is stored in a pack or otherwise out of easy reach, treat this action as retrieving a stored item.

If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take you to draw one.
When the wearer reaches into it for a specific item, that item is always on top. Thus, no digging around and fumbling is ever necessary to find what a haversack contains. Retrieving any specific item from a haversack is a move action, but it does not provoke the attacks of opportunity that retrieving a stored item usually does. The D&D rules simply make retrieving a weapon, if it's in easy reach, faster than retrieving other types of items. (It's almost as if they assumed you might be doing that a lot in the game. :smallwink:) This speedup only applies to weapons, though.

That was a 3.0 DMG errata.

So, to recap:
3.0 DMG: Move action.
3.0 DMG errata: Free action.
3.5 DMG: Move action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Edit:
@Curmudgeon: Wait... so the HHH isn't subject to the BoH's "sharp objects pierce it from the inside" clause? Can't believe I spent this long being paranoid over avoiding sticking sharp objects in a HHH.

No, a HHH has different construction from a Bag of Holding (well-made leather instead of common cloth). The resemblance to a Bag of Holding is purely in the nondimensional storage aspect; other parameters (construction, capacity, weight, speed of retrieval) are all different.
