custom imperial guard army

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who, when introduced to the world of the 41st millennium, exclaimed "thats not the future, it's just WW2 with laz cannons and bigger guns!"
ever since seeing the cadian, vostrovian, and death corps imperial guard troops, i have been thinking about just buying a bunch of WW2 models for cheep, and converting them using pieces from the space marine kits i already have.
i would probably still go with the GW models for the infantry, but for all the 'Hevy metal models i would use convertedtank models from WW2 kits.
would this be something that i could conceivably run in a GW sanctioned event?

Long story short, for a GW Sanctioned event, you wont know if it's allowed until they see it. Most of the time, the best advice for using other company's models in GW Tournaments is, don't. It never hurts to try, but, be prepared for them to 'No.'
