Posting Guidelines

Hi thanks for showing up.
How to post 101. Try to avoid open out of character here.
If you need, put a spoiler tag and label it OOC.

When posting IC, try to choose a color unique to you. It easy a lot to me (and other readers) to identify who is who.

Using Italic to non-verbal speak (thoughts, telepathy, mime language...), keep bold and underscore to a minimum, only to show importanting things (like number resultus for rolls...).

Let's try to avoid large walls of text (well, you can do, i'll try), but you should post with substance anyway.

Do dice rolling at end of your post and describe what they're for.

When I post metagame stuff it will be in a spoiler box at the end of the post.

Well that should cover it. We will see about post frequency later

Chapter 1
To move things

The Imperium now rules the entire continent in peace for two hundred years. And the last decade is indeed ten golden years. No famine or no wars. Banditry and corruption are fought merciless in all corners. Education is spreading fast in all continent.

There's no Enemy at all, but still plenty of work to do mapping seas (oceans) and caverns (Underworld). Lots of archeological treasure to claim and history to rediscover.
A very normal citizen only need to work two seasons a year, the income sustain him for another two.

You are all in your confort, having, having not adventured for months. A safe (and even boring) life is almost getting to you, and at your status quo, your attentions are directioned to bigger things. Stranger things. Things that almost no one would even notice.

There's something wrong. Here and there, things are happening. Bad things. REALLY Wrong things. Or maybe is just a hoax. There's no proof. None at all. But something is happening, you all feel in your guts. Hell, you all probably got some weird dream about those things. But not a recurring one, just a single nightmare. A disturbing twisted nightmare.

To raise your concerns, you got contacted. A imperial messenger, that's odd. It's common knowledge, if they really need to contact people like you, they would just use magic to be a lot safer and faster.

(now you can develop your scenes if you want, until the moment of the messenger's arrival, use it to make debut and describe each character)

About the First Imperium

Even among the scholars there's not much to know about the past of the Imperium.
Only the continent was held before by a few dozens of feuds split with 3 major factions. These factions never went an all-out war agains each other, actually they never got a chance, needing to make an alliance against Underworld and Overseas enemies.

This alliance survived five great wars, under the Flag of Augustus the First Caesar, Supreme General of allied armies.
Augustus also made a Senate for rule the people should he retire.
The first Senate was made of 10 people. Augustus himself,
the 3 rulers of those major factions, and 6 Augustus' worthy comanders. A senator must retire at certain age, and always choose
TWO sucessors. The senate numbers always grow that way, allowing more participants and more voices to be heard.
The actual number is about 120.

Those three factions don't exist anymore, but their culture still there, so its common to call a region by it's old name.

* Morana: North-east part of continent. Religious People, otherwise called Land of Saints. Got notable amount of temples,
religious edication, rituals and sanctified librarys. Also got the richer mines in all continent. Most of the Law system that works
on the Imperium was made using Morana's Law as base. Demographicaly had the biggest variety of races. All races were treated
equally.

* Ardeus: Center West. Neutral Good. The geographic region was made by vast forests and fields. Their habitants are mostly
wild races like some subraces of elves, centaurs, and humans. This people had "The way of living from the Earth" exercised everyday,
it was culturaly rich. Music, Arts, Poetry, you name it. Got the biggest farmable area of all factions. A.k.a Land of Wild.

* Sosseth: South. Chaotic Good. Land of Honor. Not much religious, but a "bound by honor" code was strongly reinforced.
People with willpower to move mountains, literally. Its the part of the continent that got entirely civilized. There's no wild,
forests, caves. There's only roads, cities and farmland. Its honor also was different of traditional honor codes we know, specially the part of dieing for honor.
Insted, you're not even allowed to die. You need to survive and repair what you break. People here are proud of survival and overcoming the natural hazards.

About the Empire (now).
The Empire got two captals. A Eastern and a Western one. Both equally home half of the Senate and the imperial army.
Comunication and tranport between those two capitals use magic for time saving.

Both cities got all the traits of normal big cities... Lots of people and things that people want. They got run tight by the Guard
(just normal Law enforcers) like any other cities, but in the capitals there are two more Law enforcer groups:
The imperial Elite, a small task force equivalent of multiple adventure partys in terms of strengh (levels 12 to 16).
Their jobs is to protect againts higher menaces and enforce the Law on the administrators, people who could fall to corruption.

There's also the Guard of Heroes, a army sized official Bounty Hunters Guild. All dangerous jobs are filed to them. A high risk high reward job.

The hills of Morana provided an adequate stage for the beauty of the dawn in the eyes of the tall man watching it from the balcony of his family estate. Below him, the tenders were busy with the morning duties associated to the running of the champion stables of their lord. From their pins, horses, hypogriffs, and gryphons called forth to the dawn with varied voices.

Marcus took the moment to think over his day, and was overcome with the mundane tone of his routine. His wife had traveled to her own family estate for the remainder of the season, which was a mixed blessing, but it left him with little on his plate beyond maintaining the household and the stables, which, honestly, the staff was capable of without his guidance. He sighed and dressed, eating his breakfast in silence without much interest. He stared at the walls of his chamber, to the banners of his past, and reflected on older days.

Marcus Tiberius Rex was a hero of the Imperium. In earlier days, he was a faithful servant of Jupiter, one of his greatest champions, but the gods had called for his aid less and less as the years stretched on. He was an Eques of the Imperial Army, decorated in campaigns for the Empire, but those days, too, seemed to be behind him. For several years now, he had spent more time at home than abroad in the name of noble causes, and he was beginning to understand that home life really didn't agree with him.

He finished his food, and walked out into the courtyard of his stables, flanked by his household routine each reporting on the unchanging status of his home, his investments, and his staff. He feigned attention while watching some of the stable-hands running animals through their morning exercises. Amidst the noise, all the man really wanted to do this morning was to ride his blessed mount, Callidus, into the clouds, and away from here. He knew that was irresponsible, but it was his heart's desire, none the less. He was not happy to be an idle man. Better to die in battle than to retire.

Just as he was contemplating the appeal of death on the field, one of his servants reported that a rider was approaching the estate under Imperial banner. It was an unusual event, as the Empire generally used magic to transmit messages, but, as it was a break in the bleak everyday, Marcus welcomed it. He moved to meet the rider at his gate, hoping that his action would be read as dedication to duty rather than escape of the mundane.

Quintus felt the wind beneath his wings while soaring over Ardeus to Sosseth.
At moments like this he felt truly free. Duties forgotten, work forgotten, the nagging of the Head Templar forgotten, he dived and rose again. He glided to a halt and lied down beside a small lake. He had an 'urgent' messenger capsule, but if it was truly important, they would have sent it by magic. Surely, it could wait... for a moment... he would soon be on his way again...

...

He woke up with a start when it was already dark. "Damn..." he thought.
He rose, beat his wings and made haste to arrive at his destination. He was surprised to find an imperial messenger there, since Who sends messages to messengers?

The castle's courtyard lies quiet, only servants milling in it. They transport the day's load of laundry, firewood and raw food to where it will be needed within a few hours once the day begins anew.
But they are not the reason for us being here.

The shadow of one of the yard's tree lenghtens and out steps a figure garbed in a cloak that resembles the sky.

"Merely 200feet this time it seems, I wish I could attribute this to my advances with the technique."

The figure gestures for a moment, then takes flight towards one of the lower towers of the castle, landing on its balcony. Repeatedly gesturing at the door it finally seems to be satisfied and enters.

Sadron Cromos

Today had been terrible. The Baron had no ... knack for magic at all yet still wanted to learn. Usually this would have been an utter waste of my time that I could have easily declined to pay any attention to, but the Baron also was one of the foremost collectors of ancient literature. And as distasteful as bribery is, it works.

Putting down Zarmak's "Higher Geometry of transplanar Travel" I look at my various instruments that should denote anything unusual. Well, in the tower at least, I still have to somehow achieve access to more of it through official channels, a small warning time if someone enters the tower simply is not enough.
Thats odd, apparently there still is someone on my level and labeled "no threat". Considering my rules imprinted on these detectors, that is quite a feat.

Turnin myself invisible, I walk to the door, and open it. If I had anticipated this in any way I would have prepared the arcane eye, but with my current lifestyle its simply not all that useful. And not necessary at all it seems.

In the chair outside sits an imperial messenger, fast asleep. Not that he can be blamed as I had the chair made for just this purpose myself. Still the messenger itself is rather strange though not completely out of context, considering what happened last time when they tried to get in contact through more direct means.

Deactivating the chair with the command phrase the messenger first wakes, then jumps up apologizing profusely for his apparent misconduct. I assure him that it is fine as I only just now arrived and having signed for the delivery, our ways part after a scant half-minute of interaction.

Now let us see what they want this time.

Needle forward, needle up.
Needle forward, needle up.

The half-orc's gaze was focused on Titus' hand. And he couldn't help but smirk, since he knew exactly why - the half-orc couldn't afford to give even a moment of assumptions - a half-orc couldn't trust anybody, really. Reputation or not, the nagging question was always 'So what's he getting outta this?'

After all, half-orcs learned very early on that, as far as everyone else was concerned, they pretty much exist to be exploited. Even another half-orc may be out to bolster themselves, and reasonably so.

He could convince this half-orc that he wasn't going to do that. He had a knack with words, and was in fact genuine - he really just wanted to help out.

But he didn't want friends recieved through words.

"That about does't. How'zat feel?"

The other half-orc shifted a bit, in his new shorts. "Pretty comfortable. 'ow much y'want for't?"

"Told ya - nothin'." Titus stood up. "Glad y'like it."

And after a longer stare, he shrugged. "Really. We's both 'alf-orcs - gotta 'elp each odder out, y'know? This place's got twenty four hours 'fore it vanishes on ya, but it's yers 'till den. Stay strong, brother."

And he was back to walking. It was a little thing, but if you asked him, little things were the most important things in life. Not to mention, he always enjoyed his tailoring.

Word around, however, was hesitation. There was always the doom and gloom types, but lately there's been more of them. Huh.

...was that an imperial messenger?

He shifted a bit - his ears were always a bit focused, but he wasn't terribly concerned. As he joked, he was at least half Imperial.

But he hadn't actually been adventuring properly in some time. Not that he minded too much, given his penchant for the 'little guy', but that was itself unusual. Calm before the storm, maybe? Especially since this messenger was coming to him - obviously coming to him - and not by magic instead. Curious.

Still, he waited - no sense rushing ahead. He'd see what this was about...

Yeah, its official business.
The imperial messenger handle to you a discrete scroll, sealed with the unmistakable Imperium seal. He/she/it say that tomorrow will be back to the Eastern Capital, and could carry any answer you should want to give.

Scrolls, huh? how archaic can we be nowdays...

The scroll is actually a very well made one, the finest paper rolled over two silver rods, sealed by a very special wax band branded with an infinity symbol. If you stop to think a little it could made a very nice paper weight.

If you break the wax band and read...

When you reach to crack the seal, it breaks incredible easy as soon you touch.

It's written in common, in black ink:

"
To the most excelent specialists, the most elite and unique of all people.

There's a possible potential problem that demands pre-emptive actions from us.

I, Senator Medice Andre, humbly request as a servent of the empire a meeting in my office, at the next week. Same time of Caesar's Night Festival

The reason I simply didn't teleport right there or use long distance communication is directly tied to this potential problem, I wish I could tell more but soon you will see that we should not take this as a light treat.

We got... casualities already, so please don't ignore this message.

Medice Alphonse Andre
Casa Quintus

At the very least it's a political reunion, but really sounds like a request.
The deadline is not a issue, you got good seven days.

OOC

Well, we still short of people. Don't worrying, anyone can afford to lose some turns in the start

A little more history
The Caesar's Night is the close we got of an independence holiday. It's pretty much the only official holiday, all other dates having a religious meaning and being celebratead in different fashion over the empire.

The Senate members divide themselves in houses (casas), these houses are named after numbers, representing one to twelve, the number of the first senate members.
Today it's a pratical way to designate the address in capital, specially in the inner circle of the capital, home of all polical power.
Casa Quintus means House Number Five

The beautiful temple dedicated to Minerva never loses its impact to Aberis. After his recent pilgrimage, he was content to return to a place he considered a home to him. The culture of Sosseth seemed almost backwards in some respects, but this wasn't the time to think about that. Coming home to Morana was at the front of his mind.

"Almost home at last," he says to nobody in particular as he entered Morana and went towards temple dedicated to Minerva. His routine would probably be the same upon returning. Teaching religion and spending time in the temple's library normally took a large portion of his time.

Spending some time in thought, Aberis didn't notice the messenger approaching him until the Imperial Messenger stopped before him with the message.

"I was unaware they still used scrolls for messages." Aberis thinks to himself.

Eques Rex offered his hospitality to the rider, allowing him to eat and relax while his mount was attended to and giving the old paladin time to contemplate the message. In essence, it was an answer to his longing to leave his home life for a time, but it was also a warning with dire ramifications. The nature of the communication indicated that he was just one of several to receive such messages, and, if more heroes were needed to deal with this mysterious threat, it may be dangerous indeed.

Marcus wasted little time in escaping... that is, in answering the call of his Empire. He returned to his villa, taking the time to write a message to his wife telling her only that he had to return to the capital on official business, and a dispatch to his commander in the army, explaining that he had been contacted by the senate and ordered to report to them.

He set out a stipend to his staff so they could cover expenses in his absence, and had his equipment gathered and prepared while he went to his home's shrine in order to pray to Jupiter for guidance. He meditated on the dire ramifications of the message for a few hours, giving the household time to prepare for his absence. He thought over the potential enemies of the Empire, and what he knew of Medice Andre, looking for answers to the mystery.

Finally, once everything was in order for his departure, he summoned his blessed gryphon, and took to the air. He knew that there was time before the scheduled meeting, but he wanted to spend time in the capital gathering information from old friends and contacts before he was to meet with the Senator.

OOC:
Marcus isn't a scholar, so he has little detailed knowledge of the Empire's potential enemies or of the Senator, however, he will spend some time going over what he does know about each before setting out.

Knowledge: History roll: [roll0]; Knowledge: Nobility and Royalty roll (in this setting, I would hope it would apply to politicians as well): [roll1]

Quintus pockets the scroll and wonders what the "possible potential problem" might be. After giving it a moments thought, he just decides to go find out!

"Still have to drop off some messages, but I'll guess I have to speed up a bit... Wanna see who's faster to the capitol?"
Quintus smiles, and before the messenger answers he rises, releases his disguise of humanity and goes to run his errands.

OOC:
Is the sample of handwriting enough to forge the handwriting of the senator in the future? I still miss a few letters (j,k,w and z if I'm correct), so I'll try not to use those ;P

And for the rest of the journey extended haste (42 rounds is about 10080 ft / casting with constant run actions = 235 km/day, if I use all my 4th and 5th level slots.) He drops off some messages along the way, and returns to the capital on the fifth day.

I will not be able to post for about three days, will be somewhere without internet.

"...hrm?"

Titus cocked his head to one side, after lowering the scroll. Not what he expected at all.

He glanced up. And half-smirked - the messenger probably presumed he couldn't read. Or perhaps he did - he wasn't even slightly attempting to read the man - but shrugged and pocketed the scroll.

"Tell the senator I'll be there, then."

He then returned to walking, but now he was moderately more in a hurry. After all, he didn't know anything about this particular senator. Thus, he wasn't sure what he was walking into, nor if he could trust this person.

As it was better safe than sorry, he wanted to poke around a bit ahead of time to try to know more about what he was about to trot into. As a half-orc especially, knowing more than other people thought you did was vital.

And, as he whistled to himself, he spent up to the day before doing a little research. Not attempting to dig too deep - he wasn't terribly interested in finding every little secret about the senator - but enough to hopefully know what he was getting into.

Rolls:

Not sure what rolls to make, so here are a small slew of the ones I think are most applicable. I'm using the spell improvisation to augment my checks.
