View Full Version : Do I award 3.5 xp differently when using a 3.0 module? Need some help.

So I'm running the Sunless Citadel module (3.0) for my 3.5 group. In our first session they have encountered:

3 cave rats (CR 1/8)
3 skeletons (CR 1/3)
2 Twig Blights (CR1/3)
1 Water Mephit (CR 3)

Now, using the 3.5 XP chart that would put the rats at 28xp per character, the skeles at 75xp, the blights at 50, and the Mephit at 225 for a grand total of 378xp per player.

378 dosen't seem like a lot but for a module that is around 40 pages and meant to take you only as far as through level 2 this seems like a ton for the first 2 or 3 rooms in the dungeon.

Does 3.0 xp work differently? Am I doing something wrong? Help!

Thanks : )

Are you remembering to translate the rest of the stats?

I believe XP is handled differently, especially if you go the route whereby PCs at different levels would gain different amounts of XP from one another.

But run it through an encounter calculator and compare it with the book value and see for yourself. One of the better ones online that's near the top of the list shows the difference between 3.5 and 3.0 calculation.

Anyway, my party ended up getting just barely to level 3 from Sunless Citadel, so you have to remember to take their figures with a grain of salt and not freak out.

What do you mean translate the rest of the stats?

I took the CR that the monster index has in the back of Sunless Citadel and plugging it into the CR/XP chart in the 3.5 DMG.

Also, in 3.5 skeleton is a template, so they should be skeletons of something.

I don't remember 3.0 and 3.5 XP working differently. I'd just go ahead with those numbers. Sunless Citadel is supposed to get the players to 3rd level, so they can still get roughly 10 times the amount of XP they've already acquired.
