And so we begin our series of battles!

The cast of characters:
Rocky (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=288909), master of the defensive arts of the shield!
Altera (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=289144), the daring, swashbuckling, outlaw cleric of Oghma!
Wacko (http://www.thetangledweb.net/forums/profiler/view_char.php?cid=47315), wielder of one of the most exotic weapons known to man, against whom few can stand...quite literally!
Isten (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=289615), the supreme mentalist, commanding the powers of the elements with merely his thoughts!

Remember - the party will have the opportunity to cast all-day spells, then 2 encounters, then a chance to rest and refresh spells/powers/sleep for the night, then 2 more encounters.

I'm copy/pasting your sheets as linked in the first post to have for my reference. If your stats change in a non-temporary way, please tell me.

Go ahead and pick out a color that'll signify your character. Then choose a spot within the 3x4 grid on the left (A4-C7) to start in. You have 1 round for preparatory actions (but don't move out of the starting area), then roll initiative!

Each square is 5 feet by 5 feet. The arena is 100 feet tall, from floor to ceiling. The X's represent solid stone; the W's represent a 20 foot high wall. The arena is magically lit from an unidentified force, providing evenly-lit conditions throughout the arena.

Sheet update: i noticed i'd forgotten the +1 shield AC bonus from shield specialization, so i noted that in the character sheet.

I'll make Rocky blue. my preperatory actions will be ready my shield and flail for combat, but as i have no buffing that's it.

I'll take the square C5.

Color is Dark Red..

Question: I have two powers that are 1 hour/per level.. So 6 hours long. Would those count as all day buffs I'd have active before entering the arena? Or do I need to put them up.. Also do I have focus going in? Lastly, in this round of prep, I use precog, defense, spending 4 points, to gain +2, which my sheet will soon reflect. I'll start in A5.

Your 1 hr/lvl buffs can be active, but you'll have the power points spent. And you can assume that you have your focus going in.

Initiative order is the following:
Isten
OpFor
Altera
Wacko
Rocky

So Isten, you're up.

Trust me, I plan on staying by your side.. Alright that means, my armor is up as well.. Before I take my turn.. Do we see anything hostile? Do we notice anything? Should we roll spot and listen? Currently you haven't told us anything.

Provengreil

looking at the map, i'd think the pillar in the middle prevents sight to the other side, where the enemy is deployed, so we wouldn't see anything yet. readying an action or delaying might be good ideas, unless you have more buffs you wanna put up.

as for tactics for my character, any square he threatens is difficult terrain for enemies, greatly restricting their movement near me. i can't help anyone much farther than that, though, so staying near me and wacko would be a good idea for sure. beyond that i'll try to get the heaviest hitter stuck on me with knight's challenge, and keep as many of them as possible attacking me.

IthilanorStPete

Yeah, you don't have LoS to the enemy.

I don't think I've ever delayed before.. Can I delay until a threat presents itself? Or do I just have to ready an attack?

I don't think I've ever delayed before.. Can I delay until a threat presents itself? Or do I just have to ready an attack?

Delaying and readying are two different things. Delaying means you wait to take your turn until any point in the initiative order, at which point you can jump in and take your full turn. You'll go at that point in the initiative from then on.

Readying takes a standard action on your turn. You specify an action (that takes a standard or less to make), and a condition. If that condition is met before your next turn, you take that action. This does not change your position in the initiative order.

mrcarter11
2011-04-11, 10:56 AM
I'll delay then until something of a threat appears..

Skullcrusher 1 takes a double move to I1-J2.
Skullcrusher 2 takes a double move to I9-J10.

Opposing Forces
Rounding the center wall come a pair of short, brutish ogres, one on each side. Each carries a morningstar and a heavy spiked shield, wearing half-plate with more spikes on it. They also have large sacks slung from their waists, with what appear to be large rocks in them. You can make Knowledge (nature) checks for more info.

Isten, you can choose to take your turn now. If not, it's Altera's turn.

Altera jogs her memory for anything Ogre-related ("their armor is weak at the neck and under the arm"... no, that's Uruk-Hai). She then moves into the main room and sideways, as not to interfere with anyone's charge, while drawing her bow, and lets loose an arrow at the ogre in front of her.

First things first, Knowledge (Nature), also to fuel Knowledge Devotion [roll0]
Move to E9
Attack [roll1] + KD bonus 1
Damage [roll2] + KD bonus 1

Edit: KD bonus is +1

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-11, 12:21 PM
Altera can't recall anything about this particular type of ogre. Her arrow hits the ogre between the plates of its armor, dealing a minor amount of damage.

Since a threat has most assuredly presented itself, I imagine Isten would like to take his turn - he's up next.

mrcarter11
2011-04-11, 12:27 PM
OOC: Yes, I'd like to act now.. Sadly the srd and my sheet is blocked by the filter here.. I'll have to wait until I get home.. Unless someone would like to help me. I need the range for Energy Cone and Energy Missile.

Vladislav
2011-04-11, 12:28 PM
It's in the SRD

Cone is 60', Missile 100'+10'/level

mrcarter11
2011-04-11, 12:36 PM
OOC: As I sad, the srd is blocked by the filter where I am currently.. Thanks though.

Isten deciding that leaving this wall of protection would not be the smartest idea, decides to stay where he is. Calling upon his mental prowess, he launches 4 missiles of pure energy at the southern group.

My first time with psionics.. So if I have goofed, let me know. Also seeing as how I can't look at the srd, I'm just gonna manifest this and hope for the best.
6 points for Energy Missile. Should hit all four. Going to go with electric damage. I don't believe an attack roll is needed, if it is, let me know.
Damage [roll0] I believe it is a reflex save, of 17. And then I think electric increases that by one..

Provengreil
2011-04-11, 12:38 PM

Provengreil

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-11, 12:45 PM
Energy missile doesn't need an attack roll.

DM/obs:
[roll0] needs 23 to pass.

EDIT: The ogre fails his save, and electricity courses through its body.

Incidentally, the save DC was 23 - 10 + 5 (Int) + 1 (first lvl power) + 5 (5 pp spent augmenting it, which also increases the DC for energy missile) + 2 (effect of electricity).

Isten, I'm assumign you would have taken your delayed turn right after the ogres appeared, so the new initiative order is:
OpFor
Isten
Altera
Wacko
Rocky.

Wacko's up.

mrcarter11
2011-04-11, 12:52 PM
OOC: I could have swore Energy Missile was second level.. And the PP you spend to augment adds to the DC? I didn't know that.. Can you tell me where it says that, so I know?

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-11, 12:53 PM
Err, second level. So the DC's...10 + 5 int + 2 for lvl + 3 additional pp + 2 electricity = 22, then. Don't worry, the ogres still failed. And it depends on the power - Energy Missile has the text:

Augment

For every additional power point you spend, this power’s damage increases by one die (d6) and its save DC increases by 1

mrcarter11
2011-04-11, 12:57 PM
I had forgotten that text.. Well much thanks. And I'm guessing it didn't drop the thing but he's hurt? And chance of descriptive text so that we know how injured our opponents are?

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-11, 12:58 PM
Between the electricity and the arrow, he's still got over half health, but not by much.

IthilanorStPete

Clarification time. Nine, when you make a trip attack, you don't automatically deal damage. So is your first attack a bona fide attack, or a trip attempt?

NineThePuma
2011-04-11, 04:58 PM
I possess the Knock Down feat: any time I deal at least 10 damage, I automatically receive a free trip attempt. Improved Trip lets me attack anyone I trip.

Ergo, an attack from me is "Attack, trip, attack!" at my foes.

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-11, 05:00 PM

Actually, given my 20 ft speed and lack of reach, E6 would be a better starting position for me, if it's allowed.
And to isten, don't worry about a lack of buffs. If a wizard isn't involved, no group of four is really gonna have everything, so we'll make do without buffs.

Well, I'm glad it was entertaining!

On the subject of arrow demons, they do seem somewhat under-CRed, though I don't think by that much. It just happened that you guys didn't really have ways to take advantage of their weaknesses - no detection, low AC, slightly below-average saves. I definitely shouldn't have thrown two of them at you, so I'm sorry about that.

If you want, we can go ahead and do some more fights, and I'll try to find something that's a bit less overwhelming while still being interesting.

Time to invoke the most powerful school of magic - Retconjuration!

We'll go ahead and start as if the party had just rested; full HP, PP, and spells for everyone. Isten, go ahead and put up your hr./lvl stuff as you like.

Also, I'm going to change my character a bit, juggle some feats.

Yeah, changing characters around a bit is fine.

mrcarter11
2011-04-18, 03:08 PM
I didn't mean level up now.. I meant may it happen in the future.. Sheesh. And if we can change characters a little, I may take a closer look at my feats and powers.. I mean, is focus really good for anything at low levels? And alright I'll have my sheet reflect such things.

Vladislav
2011-04-18, 03:12 PM
Just realized that having the Trickery domain, Invisibility is actually an in-class spell for me, so bought a couple of scrolls. Replaced Weapon Focus with Animal Devotion, and I'm done.

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-18, 03:12 PM
Probably no leveling up in the immediate future; there's not that much of a difference between 6 and 7 for non-casters, and 4th level isn't nearly as crucial a level for powers as it is for spells. I might be up for doing some fights at, say, level 9 or 10 though.

Altera focuses for a moment, and translucent wings grow on her back.
She reads a scroll of Invisibility, then flies above the walls, while drawing her weapons.

Standard action: cast Invisibility from a scroll

IthilanorStPete

Isten seeing this new foe, has no idea how to tackle it. In the end he decides blasting it is likely the best answer. He sends a series of fire missiles. Each missile targeting a head.

I have no idea how to fight this thing.. Going with fire though. Not sure how many heads there are, but I think I can hit up to 5.

[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]
[roll3]
[roll4]

So 5 fire rolls, one per missile that can hit.. If I'm right. Add 6 to each of those, since I forgot..

IthilanorStPete
2011-04-20, 12:05 AM
The heads don't count as different creatures, so no shooting them all with one energy missile. Nice try, though!

EDIT: I'm going to c/p from the SRD the relevant text that you guys should know OOC for the sake of handling this encounter:

To sever a head, an opponent must make a successful sunder attempt with a slashing weapon. (The player should declare where the attack is aimed before making the attack roll.) ... An opponent can strike at a hydra’s heads from any position in which he could strike at the hydra itself, because the hydra’s head writhe and whip about in combat. An opponent can ready an action to attempt to sunder a hydra’s head when the creature bites at him...(note: Provengreil, this overrides what I said earlier to you in chat. Sorry about that.)

A hydra’s body can be slain just like any other creature’s...Any attack that is not (or cannot be) an attempt to sunder a head affects the body...

Targeted magical effects cannot sever a hydra’s heads (and thus must be directed at the body) unless they deal slashing damage and could be used to make sunder attempts...

NineThePuma
