So today (well, it's 4:30 AM on the east coast so really yesterday) I got laid off from my job :smallfrown:.

Journey, Billy Joel, The Beatles, La Roux, and an assorted Pandora-chosen mix of techno has failed to get me back to cheerful so I'm looking for playgrounder recommendations: what albums/songs do you recommend to pull me out of a post-firing funk? (Songs need not be post-firing specific, but I'm looking for an auditory pick-me-up wherever I can get it).

Anything will do. I'm feeling musically adventurous so suggest whatever comes to mind.

Thanks in advance! I'll be fine whatever happens, so I better not see any pity posts. There are better things to worry about

There is only one song and one song only, that can pick you up from that. I present to you I Can See Clearly Now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtiXiYMS86U), sung by the wonderful Jimmy Cliff. If this fails to cheer you up then I have no choice than to suggest you go buy it and listen to it until it does.

When I got the blues, I watch Interstella 5555 by Daft Punk (film + soundtrack). Also good is the Blues brothers soundtracks.

Hope it works out for you! Good luck.

For me, it's any very cheesy pop/rock song that I can sing along to in a loud annoying voice.

Call Me - Blondie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StKVS0eI85I)
Holding out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBwS66EBUcY&feature=related) (accept no imitations!)
Built this City - Starship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsdj9NRzqC4)
China in your hand - T'pau (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSh6SQd8UrI)

... and now I search for them I realise all the cheesy stuff I listen to is from before I was born. :smalleek: :smalltongue:

I tend to go for the more introspective stuff in situations like this: music you can get lost in. To that end, the album Transference, by Spoon, is terrific. Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InHtHX3l-sQ) a (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUJKOYTe2h8&feature=related) taste... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM-8zR9ftxI&feature=related) If your preference is more for the old-school stuff, Steely Dan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xaw0oDqDFlY)'s cool. Some jazz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEC8nqT6Rrk) is never out of place either.

If you're feeling adventurous and really don't care about subject matter, try Asian Kung-Fu Generation. They have a number of fantastic songs: Blue Train, My World, Rewrite, Haruka Kanata (to name a few).

Also, perhaps give Steven Reich a gander. He is considered the founder of sampling as we know it, a prominent member of the minimalist movement, and makes liberal use of phasing. Music for 18 Musicians is considered his hallmark piece.

And if you're feeling like something off the wall, give some 8-bit music a shot. I've been riding a Sabrepulse kick for well over a year. I especially like his later stuff since he samples Robert Monroe a bunch.

You know how long I've been waiting for another Minimalist fan to come along on these forums? A very long time indeed.

Inside In/Inside Out by the Kooks. Very happy music.
Vampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend. Incredibly energetic.
Maybe Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Ros as well. It's a more subtle than the Kooks, but it always leaves me happy.

The happiest song in the world is Mediational Field (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqCdptfpaTA) from the Paprika soundtrack. :)

"Shot Through The Heart" is Track 1 on Barney Stinson's Get Pumped Mix. May it serve you well.

And outside of my brother, you're the first person I've come across that knows of the movement.

Tell me, isn't Different Trains (Europe During the War) one of the most haunting songs you have ever heard?

wouldn't billy Joel make things worse?

Lets Dance by David Bowie, also for a lark you should check out the album version which basically predicts all techno music ever.

It's beautiful, yeah. Music for 18 Musicians will always be my favorite, though.

I'd say we should make a Minimalist thread, but we'd probably be the only two people posting in it. :smalltongue:

I take it you haven't listened to much Kraftwerk. :smalltongue:

Wow, I'm actually happy to have given my boss my two weeks notice yesterday, despite not exactly having a job yet. Anyways, a song that always cheered me up was "All Star" by Smash Mouth

More Bowie!

Young Americans
Changes
All the Young Dudes
Life on Mars?

And now that I think about it, Jim Croce might have some nice tunes for you. Operator, Rapid Roy, and Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown were always favorites to me.

Now that I think more on it, Chicago made a great, upbeat tune called Make Me Smile.

EDIT: I have more!

Caught up in you by .38 Special
Got My Mind Set on You by George Harrison (Best music video ever)
Mr. Blue Sky by ELO

Moff,

We may be having a two-person conversation on Minmalists and you would probably dominate the entire discourse. I've only started to discover the artists recently and I'm trying to listen to more of it.

Heh, for me it was It's been the worst day...since yesterday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDSud7vAH_0)...

I took it as one door closing, and another door pried open, forced my way in and making it work!
