Hey, I was just looking at this class (http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Gadgeteer_%283.5e_Class%29) over on D&D Wiki, and I'm not sure if it's balanced or not. It's meant to be a tier 2-3 version of the Artificer, balanced against Factotum, Warblade, well-optimized UMD-abuse Rogue, etc.

If you have to ask, it's probably not.

It looks to me like a hilarious parody of how broken core casters are.

Nah, it's tome material. If you've seen their version of the fighter (which is supposed to stand up against the batman wizard) that's the point where it gets funny. This is relatively tame by comparison.

Coax Device is very powerful for a 1st level ability. Permanent take 10 on Disable Device is going to make your DM cry if he plans on using traps what so ever.

Depend on how it's ruled, Confuse Magic Device could ridiculous for a Blastigadgeteer at higher levels if he picks up some wand boosting mechanics that burn charges for more firepower. If you rule that the +10 DC can only remove the first charge used, and anymore added after that still gets burned it should be fine.

Crafted Companion is potentially very abuse-able, I'm just not into construct abuses yet.

I'll just go through some of the galactic gadgets, can't be bothered with them all.

Doomsday Cannon will ruin games.

Gate-gun is gate, you know the abuse involved in this.

Actually no... I'm not going to go through them all. The lategame will be all centered on abusing this guy's stuff to avoid adventuring at all and suffer no risks. I wouldn't play it in a game I expected to be balanced.

That's my 5 cents.

You sure? Some of the feats are pretty good...

Darwin: you forgot the 20MT Bomb, which is essentially wightopocalypse 1/day.

Thanks for the help, everyone. According to my checklist, this means pretty much everything (other then the monsters) in the Book of Gears is completely broken. Yaaaaaay!

The Warmage and Alchemist also have that ability under different names. My favorite is the Alchemists though, "Good Strong Hot Strong Warming - But Not Hotting - Good Fresh Fresh Good Tea":smalltongue:

Well, there's yer problem, right there.

In seriousness, there's a lot of pretty terrible homebrew on D&D wiki. Pretty much nothing from the Tomes is at all good for any game vaguely describable as normal, for instance. Their attitude was basically, well...some stuff in D&D is broken. If we make it ALL broken, we will have balance.

Are you referring to the one with Green Dragon as the moderator, or the one with Surgo? Because the one with Surgo actually has some pretty good classes, Ghostwheel's stuff (http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/User:Ghostwheel), Fire Mage (http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Fire_Mage_%283.5e_Class%29), Meat Shield (http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Meat_Shield_%283.5e_Class%29), and Nomad (http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Nomad_%283.5e_Class%29) in particular look like they would be fun. It also has that handy-dandy balance point feature.

On Tome games... yeah you're pretty much right on the money there. It's meant for tier 1 campaigns where even the commoners are badass. Tome + killer DM seems like it might actually be really fun.

Yeah. dnd-wiki has bits of balance. dandwiki has little that even resembles balance.

And guh. Not a fan of Frank and K's material. I like some of their fluff, but most of their mechanics are not good ideas.
