Part 2: The Repercussions of Success

Recap
On a quest for your Shaman (the leader of your desert city) you entered into a vast ruins. Here you received a quest that would transform your barren wasteland of a home into a land of lush foliage and hearty game. You battled your way ruthlessly through hordes of goblins and demon-cults, through zombies and kenku, through mortal men and children.

The ruins were falling apart around you, but still you found the ten shards and opened the door into the world full of trees and water. But you let something else out. An Eladrin woman, ranting about taking control of the world, was released when you opened that door. Further, a middle-aged Tiefling man saw you do this.

He began to teleport away in jumps and you followed his trail. You are still following his trail, and have been for several days. There are giant trees everywhere, and the monotony of their presence has gotten you used to the change (if anyone can get used to such large plants).

The party goes about their numb task of following the only path for miles around. They have been walking for days and the boredom eats at their bellies. Crow, feeling brave or foolhardy, climbs to the very top of one of the massive green plants, deftly using branches as footholds and hand-holds. When he reaches the top all he sees is more forest in the distance. As he is about to descend he notices a plume of black smoke from the east. It seems as if their path will lead them straight to this place where a great fire smolders. But for good or ill?

Might want to avoid words like "tree" as you have never ever seen these things, or heard of them, or maybe even believed in them. Go ahead and start playing if you guys want. Chris will pop in when he gets here.

Keep in mind that he changed his character to a Bullywug Barbarian. We'll pretend he's been with you for a while and that Speeral Tiots died in a "tree"-related accident.

By the time the party reaches the fire it is dusk, and the flames have died away. In what might have been a natural opening of the strange tall plants, is the burning remnants of a hamlet. Black, smoking piles of ash are scattered around the ground. One building, seemingly made from the strange hard plants, remains. It is gutted and what is left is charred black.

Bodies lay strewn about everywhere. Women, children, men with axes and clubs. All are human, and all are dead. The smell of ash mixed with the smell of burned flesh. The devastation had to be recent; There are no animals yet here to scavenge the bodies of the dead. Not even flies.

The bodies have been thoroughly looted, and the sting of ash gets in your eyes as you search. There is a body dressed in fine clothing (excepting the large burned portions) that you did find something interesting on. It was a burned and tattered letter. It reads:

Yeah, you're right Professor Max.

So this next bit is a skill challenge. Since you have not done one before like this (certainly not on-line) here is my explanation of how it will work.

You are going to be asked questions. You may roll skill checks before you make responses to try to make more appropriate answers. The higher the check, the more likely success is. However, only one person can answer each question. I would prefer not going by initiative (because then the wizard might get stuck with the nature check and the fighter with the arcana check) so whoever answers first will be the only one with a skill check to roll. Others can pipe up to support or deny what the speaker says, but after 24 hours, I will be asking the next question.

Feel free to have one person act as envoy and answer all the questions, but if this is done, that person should consult the group. I would like you guys to all have a chance to participate in this.

Near dusk you take another turn down the trodden path, and are confronted by looming stone walls. Twenty feet ahead of you a city wall rears up over fifty feet into the sky.The large plants end about where you are standing. A portcullis made of iron stands half as high as the wall along the path. You can see houses and people through the gate.

A few guards stand atop the wall, and some are pointing at you. One, clad in a dull grey uniform without emblem, steps forward and yells out to you, "Who are you that would pass these gates?"

SpaceHamster15

He reaffixes his spectacles on his nose, then responds. "Oh, hello! I am Professor Emeritus Maximillian Markopoulos, of the Academy of Bulkor," he states with a hint of pride. Gesturing around the party, he names each man. "With me are Sciens the Bard, the warriors Crow and Raul, and there may possibly be another a day or so behind us."

Crixx
2011-05-21, 11:53 AM
This gives the guard pause. "You claim to have come from the desert and have escaped the clutches of the Ruined city. Now you say you know not of the blighted?" The guard shakes his head. "If it were up to me, you'd be shackled and thrown into the dungeons for such lies . . . however, you have agreed to peace within the city, so there is naught I can do."

The guard turns away from you then, and a few moments later the gate is raised enough for your party to enter the city. Beneath the gate the guardsmen bind such weapons as they can to their scabbards with a complicated knot of gold, red, and grey thread.

It is near evening as you finally enter the city of Orel. The common folk rush about their lives around you. There are wooden signs hanging from every storefront, and paths to your right lead down to colossal crafts made from the plants in the forest. They float on an expanse of water larger than you could have ever dreamed.

May I make an Arcana check to see if I gather any useful information about how magic is performed and studied in this area (i.e. important local magical figures, if the verdant environment plays a significant role in their magic, etc)?

Here's also an Insight check because I'm sort of inferring these things: 5 + 14 = 19

If I can find a scroll for it, I'd like to buy the Bloom ritual since everything is all lush and green around here, and as an Adroit Explorer, Max feels like he should incorporate some of this country into his magic to take it with him.

Deeper into the sprawling city, this time in a grimy alleyway, he finds another shop called Wizards and Nobles. Though this at first seems like a strange place for magic, the squat gnome patron turns out to be a wise fellow.

He leans in close over the counter to tell Professor Max what he knows. "The council will tell you that those who are blighted have caused the lands in the north to become a ghost of what they were. But some say, the place changes the people. If a mother eats the diseased fruit of those lands, her child is sure to be blighted." He leans back and begins shuffling through his wares as he had been when the wizard arrived. In the future it might be good if you guys had a plan as a party to get together somewhere or something. Creaking in the twilight breeze, a sign painted with the image of a sprawling, drunken bear catches the eye of Professor Max. From the doorway below the sign tumble the sounds and smells of an inn, lulling the hungry and tired mage closer and over the threshold. I'll stay here, he decides, and look for my friends tomorrow.

Raul, as if being guided by the divine hand of Erathis, finds himself standing in front of a sign with a sleeping bear upon it. Upon arriving, he knows deep down that either he will find his comrades here, or someone here will have heard/seen something of them.

With a stomach growling, he enters the inn as the last bit of daylight reflects off his peace-tied mace.

Sciens, Raoul, and Professor Max spend a restful night at The Sleepy Bear. They are awoken near dawn by yelling from the inn's lobby. Valda, the halfling woman Sciens saw the day before, is berating the innkeep again about his patronage. Words sift through the walls to reach the adventurers. ". . . care if they can't pay . . . peasants . . . no homes . . . filthy. You Hear me?"

Halfway across the city, Crow has a different sort of night. In the hour just before dawn he is awoken, after falling to sleep weary with travel, by the light of a torch. The man approaching is the Tiefling from just outside the ruined city. He is dressed in fine red robes with the symbol of a hammer sown in black on the chest. "I am sorry for the inconvenience Crow. There was a misunderstanding by the gate guards. Duke Octavio wishes to send his most gracious apologies for this grave error. You are released now from this cell. Your friends are staying at an inn called The Sleepy Bear near the docks south-east from here. May I see you again under better circumstances." Without giving Crow time to respond, the tiefling opens the cell and teleports away. Crow finds all of the guards inside the jail-house to be sleeping.

Crow looks about the jail-house (without moving, just looking, so as not to make any noise) for any sort of small blade. Not a dagger or sword or any sort of real weapon, just a kitchen knife or something of that sort. Something that wouldn't be missed.

Assuming he finds such a blade, he then discretely attempts to cut through the cords on his maul, then loosely re-ties the severed cord to disguise the fact that it's been cut.

Crow shifts his carriage of the maul so that the knot is as well concealed against his body as possible (e.g. if the knot is on the head, he turns it so that the head rides against his hip rather than overtop his shoulder) and sets off for the inn, discretely remaining clear of any pedestrian traffic he might encounter.

Upon arriving, he offers the requisite coin to the innkeeper for a room.

After the awkward and interesting conversations with the halfling woman Valda and the fat innkeep of The Sleepy Bear, the group of adventurers begins its journey to the east. As they pass through the eastern gate, they are informed by a guard on duty that they may cut their peace knots.

About half a days walk from the city walls, they come upon a deserted town. A few buildings are half-burned, but most seem intact. Strangely enough, there seem to be a few tracks heading toward the north-east, further away from the safety of the city.

Following this trail brings on dusk. The adventurers follow the tree-surrounded path, and soon hear voices in the distance. Fires can be seen through the foliage.

All right, 2 things. 1: the town that you passed through had some farming supplies, but was pretty well raided. There were some plates and other household items. Professor Max winces at the sickening blow Raul delivered to his target. He quickly turns his attention back to the campful of bandits around them, and casts a charm to lull some to harmless unconsciousness.

I apologize for taking so long.

SLEEP: Burst 2 within 20 (the transparent purple box)
Int Attack: 9 + 16 = 25 vs Will

Hit: The target is slowed (save ends). If the target fails its
first saving throw against this power, the target becomes
unconscious (save ends).
Miss: The target is slowed (save ends).

**I'm popping my Orb of Imposition power to give the top-rightmost one -4 (wis mod) to his saves against this power.
**I'm also using my daily weapon power to make his buddy right next to him roll twice when he attempts saves and use the lower result.

A crash comes from inside the largest building as the bandits targeted by Professor Max's spell become increasingly sluggish. There are many shouts throughout the bandit camp and many of the bandits begin to converge on the group of intruders. The comrade of the fallen man swings his club viciously toward Raoul's exposed face, but the blow rebounds early, having hit the barrier provided to Raoul from the divine Erathis. Two of them men in the spell's area then fall unconscious, while the others seem to recover from the effects.

Well, that makes it Raoul's turn. After this battle I will be switching map programs.
