View Full Version : What System Rulebooks would you suggest?

So, I'm continuously reading about all these other settings, like Exalted, and Hackmaster(I think?) and other ones, that all follow 3.x Rules, but obviously have several differences. Which settings would you suggest finding Rulebooks/Handbooks for(ie: which settings are really fun). I ask because I'd eventually like to branch out and try out these other systems, but there are so many different ones, I have no idea which ones to try. Like, I did a search for exalted, and I found the 2nd edition rulebooks, but there are like 30 different rulebooks. Are they all needed? How come I don't see any player handbook for it(ie: a section that details the various races and classes you can choose from)?

Actually, both Hackmaster and Exalted are their own roleplaying systems and don't follow 3.X. They aren't even D&D, so there's no "Player's Handbook". They don't even really have races and classes as D&D does.

For 3.x, official settings were Greyhawk (which didn't really get any books though, I think), Eberron (newly introduced for this edition) and Forgotten Realms. There's also semi-official ones like the Pathfinder setting (forgot the name) and Ravenloft, though these are a bit more difficult to find.

Don't know about Exalted, but HackMaster certainly DOES have Classes and Races.

HackMaster 4th Edition is actually a continuation of AD&D. It uses the AD&D game engine with additional rules. There IS a Player's HandBook and a GM Book, Class splatbooks and Monster books.

HackMaster Basic(aka HackMaster 5th/Advanced). So far the only thing produced for this version is HackMaster Basic, one book only, everything you need in one book. It has Four Races and Four Classes.

Good to know about HackMaster, I'll have to eventually look into finding those books.

So, if exalted doesn't have a players handbook or classes/races, how do you decide what kind of character to play? Feats/skills? Do you just make them up as you go?

Also, what other Systems are there? Doesn't have to be 3.x, could be it's own system like Exalted/HackMaster, or anything else. I'm interested in learning about all types of them.

So, if exalted doesn't have a players handbook or classes/races, how do you decide what kind of character to play? Feats/skills? Do you just make them up as you go?

It's a point-buy system. You can buy any ability you want from a list, with lower powers leading to more powerful ones, and with a few prerequisites.

I don't know how comprehensive it is, but this list (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TabletopGames) might be helpful in learning about other systems.

...you don't have those. Many games don't have those. Exalted uses a completely different system, which does not require all those things. A lot of games use systems that are little like d20 System. Most of them are better than d20 System, in fact (though my favorite game is M&M, which is based on the OGL, so I don't know if I'd be willing to say it is unsalvageable). In fact, AD&D didn't have feats and skills, so they are not even an intrinsic part of the whole Dungeons & Dragons franchise.

This (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=3671&it=1) is Exalted 2nd Edition core rulebook. It has everything you need to play (Solars, that is). Other books add many options that are helpful, but none are strictly necessary to play (they are, however, necessary to understand the setting).

1: Exalted is not only completely different from D&D setting wise, it uses the Storyteller System.

2: You want to know "What other systems there are?" You do realize that D&D is not the be all and end of RPGs right? Let's take a quick look at a list of the other systems:

Just to put it in perspective, that list is hardly comprehensive.

((I do find it strange that you posted this thread in the d20 subforum, and the first post is about two systems that have nothing to do with the d20 System.))

You'll have to forgive me, as I've only ever known about D&D, and i guess Warhammer 40k(though I always thought that was a tabletop strictly game until recently). That list is certainly an Eye Opener, I never realized there were so many totally different systems out there. Absolutely incredible to see that vastness of choice.

Also, I posted here because it seemed the best place to ask, and also because I thought Exalted and HackMaster were kind of off-shoots of D&D. Lol, goes to show how little I really know ^^

The thing is, you really need a general idea of what kind of game you want before you can make a choice.

There are, I'd say, more or less two areas you should have an idea on: Rule-heavyness (clunky term, I'll try to think of a better one) and Genre.

Genre is easy: there are superhero games, pulp action games, historical games, fantasy games of all kinds, science fiction games, horror games, detective games. Really, anything you can think off.

Rule-heavyness is more complicated. D&D 3.X is at the more rules-heavy end of the spectrum, with detailed rules for many situations. Other games will have much shorter rules, with some more freeform-like systems having as little as three to five pages. FATE can really be explained in five sentences, Exalted has dozens of books.

Then, in an increasing number of games, there's the question of how you want the game to be structured and who you want to have narrative control. As in: Can players introduce plot elements outside of their characters, or is that only up to the GM? Do you even want to have a GM?

But regarding the original question, since it looks like you're specifically interested in fantasy games and are coming at them only knowing D&D and Warhammer, I'd recommend checking out Mouseguard for a fairly common game with a distinct setting and a very different take on how rpgs work.

One thing that I suggest is to attend a Game Convention. You can usually find quite a few different games to try out, and meet some new people at the same time.

There are these fancy things called free systems, some of them are worth looking up. Off the top of my head, here are some that work well for fantasy, which can be easily transitioned to from D&D (The second phrase is the limiting one here, there are a lot of options):
GURPS Lite
Savage Worlds Basic
Fudge
Nemesis

BRP is pretty good.
