"The original war of the worlds was 100 years ago. Although the aliens were eventually defeated the battle for survival has left half the globe as uninhabitable wasteland. Much of the land still inhabited is little better, some water sources still run black with the alien's poisons, once fertile plains are now arid deserts, massive mountains that once concealed great Dwarfern cities have been reduced to rubble.

Having finally won the war the allied races faced a struggle simply to survive on a planet that was no longer suited to their survival. But the aliens left a parting gift, their power source. A metal that produces massive amounts of heat when exposed to water.

Some turn to magic, others turn to steam. Humanity (And friends) rebuild. The elves seek to heal the remaining sacred forests by arcane arts, the dwarfs adopt steam power as a way of taking the farmland necessary to support their new cities etc.

Frictions were inevitable, especially as the shorter lived races birthed new generations with no memory of the war that forced dwarfs to cooperate with goblins. New social structures form, based around geographic location and mutual support rather than the traditional racial barriers.
