So I'm looking for songs that would make you picture flying over Vietnam in an old helicopter. Songs like Fortunate Son.

Four Dead in Ohio.

I read the title and I immediately thought "Eve of Destruction."

Four Dead in Ohio.

You mean Ohio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SswXJX6X-ow)?[/recovering CSN&Y fanboy]

Hendrix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK92W2RzbjE) is always appropriate. I've always thought Sludge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq9CglF086o) Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WkaeBZ1kGU) was well suited to the more horrific aspects of war, as well.

I do, it's known to Ohioan's (myself) as Four Dead in Ohio, because there are other songs known simply as Ohio. Helps to make a distinction on which you're talking about. It's also known as that at Kent State University (which I attended). My parents were also there at the shooting.

What you're looking for is Ride of the Valkyries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpvLCptAHT8).

Which'd be fine if the OP was Ohioan, but I think it's pretty safe to assume he's not. :smalltongue: But! Pointless nitpick is pointless.

The Mars Volta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzRFlXbq-cY) always felt thematically appropriate.

I concede the point :P It wasn't something I thought about when I posted it. I saw the title, came and posted. Twenty lashes for me.

I'll probably think of others later too.

This song should be what you are looking for The Black Angels - Young Men Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvKjpGP6P5Y)

The soundtrack to Battlefield Vietnam, pretty much:

1. Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Fortunate Son" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBfjU3_XOaA)
2. Edwin Starr - "War" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d8C4AIFgUg)
3. Martha and the Vandellas - "Nowhere to Run" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQRIOKvR2WM)
4. The Troggs - "Wild Thing" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qHX493bB3U)
5. Rare Earth - "Get Ready" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agWpGKg0u3g)
6. Canned Heat - "On the Road Again" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF0LLfm2bns)
7. The Guess Who - "Shakin' All Over" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koArHqulo3A)
8. Count Five - "Psychotic Reaction" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9a4W2FZnpc)
9. Deep Purple - "Hush" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLzqQupzzmA)
10. The Kinks - "All Day and All of the Night" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMWNwHof0kc)
11. The Kinks - "You Really Got Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHIBzztd2Vs&feature=fvst)
12. The Box Tops - "The Letter" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toBl4rvTgs8&feature=related)
13. Jefferson Airplane - "Somebody to Love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIkoSPqjaU4)
14. Bobby Fuller Four - "I Fought the Law" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0sI6eFarFE)
15. Budapest Symphony Orchestra - "The Ride of the Valkyries" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmo54D1_3Mc)
16. The Trashmen - "Surfin' Bird" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB_fDwBMkCQ)
17. Jefferson Airplane - "White Rabbit" - (Instrumental with quotes) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chk7DPsahN0)

Now, I may be thinking of these because they showed up in the game, and you could play them while flying around in a Huey, and the other players could hear you coming...but I do think it's a good selection of tunes nonetheless.

Really confused as to why White Rabbit is on that list. The only reason I can see is that it was out during that time period.

Because it may have been popular with the troops (the subject of the song would have been familiar as well, that sort of thing seems fairly stereotypical in depictions of the period and situation in question - though that's getting close to board no-no discussions)?

But like I said, it makes me think of the OPs request, probably mostly because it showed up in the game.

Hades, you forgot Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones, as well as The End and Break On Through by the Doors.

Hades

I think those are actually from the Eve of Destruction mod add-on, rather than the original game, but they work as well:

18. The Rolling Stones - "Paint it Black" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNvl19RDqbI)
19. The Doors - "The End" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGmAmJFUvzM)
20. The Doors - Break on Through (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dLAv0NklTg)

There seem to be two ways to go about this: looking for songs that are sort of iconic in this role from films and whatnot (Ride of the Valkyries etc.) or songs that evoke that sort of iconic feel, and then on the other hand what the soldiers might actually have been listening to (popular tunes, rock, etc.).

One hell of a lot of country music, unless Joes changed a whole lot more than I think in the past half-century or so.

The only reason it's left out of these collections is that it's associated with bikers, and Hollywood can't handle the idea that things can have multiple connotations or associations.
It's the right time, 1968, and it has that gritty, hard driving, badass sound that you can't quite get anywhere else.

My dad told me about how some creep was singing that when he was getting a check-up to see if he was fit for service back in the 70's.

Four Sticks, by Led Zeppelin. The rhythm always made me think of a helicopter, and if you take a look at the lyrics...
