You've probably seen the shows on Discovery Channel, detailing the most deadly animals on the face of the planet based on different categories. So I thought I'd explore the same concept in D&D and gather the opinions of the community.

We could decide which ones are the best within their CR, but overall is going to be "Biggest/highest CR."

For instance, CR2 is pretty much Leopard in core.

good point, CR by 3s seems best, as in 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-19 and 20+.

^: Challenge Rating. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/intro.htm)

Well, I'd say first off there's the

Fleshraker (MM3) @ ~CR5

Battletitan (MM3) @ ~CR16

Dire Tiger (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/direTiger.htm) @ CR 8

Giant Crocodile (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/crocodileGiant.htm) @ CR 4

This list (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=1354.msg35416#msg35416)of druid animal companions might be a handy place for baselines of comparison for animals.

The categories animal companions tend to be grouped as far as I can tell are A. meatshields, B. flyers, C. grapplers, and D. (pouncing) chargers with some overlap. Might want to expand upon this or exclude some of 'em. I dunno. Maybe just focus the categories a bit more into sub-ones?

I would suggest "control" to put trippers in there with grapplers, since you can trip larger creatures better then you can grapple them. But most of the options are just renditions of charging (powerful blow, trample etc.)

added a few 'categories' for this

to be honest, I'm interested in the Poison and Assassin categories myself since they are the two I know the least about

Should the list include templates? AFAIK, there are only three templates that don't change type from Animal: Horrid, Magebred and Warbeast.

A definite competitor for deadliest tank is the Bloodstriker (MM3), which has acidic blood which hurts whoever manages to hit it and has a fair bucket of HP and natural armor as well.

This is D&D's way of saying all your bases are belong to us

Actually I think the best CR3 monster for Charger should be the deinonychus, it does an average of 20 damage on a charge and has a pretty good chance of all of its attacks hitting at that level.

I nominate the Giant Squid (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/squidGiant.htm) as a CR 9 grappler. 10 tentacle attacks, constrict on all of them. Omnom BSF.

I would say no since it would be a given that you could apply those templates to the creature, but which template is most Deadly could be a separate category.

I like the crab, but for some reason it's listed as a Vermin and thus TECHNICALLY doesn't qualify.

I do wonder why they made insects mindless in the first place. :smallconfused:

And, yes, deadliest template either as its own category or as a special mention for each category what template best augments a creature towards this capacity.... Horrid probably wins on a number of counts...

I really wanna figure out some way to get that on land with at least some ability to move about under its own power... possibly flight...

Something about Flying Squid monsters makes me warm and happy inside and reminds me of that one XKCD strip. (http://xkcd.com/520/)

you don't need to make it flying, really, just have a Druid with Wall of Water and you can summon one ALMOST anywhere, so long as it would fit...or Wildshape into it

I'm adding a few of my own nominations in there now, just to sort of fill it up a bit
