View Full Version : IronCraft I Minecraft Building Challenge

Forbiddenwar
2011-04-27, 07:42 PM
Judging is finished.

Awards are granted on Tuesday 9EST. Everyone is welcome.
Pics of entries as well as scores will be added here, in the OP and in the minecraft thread. Thank-you everyone for not disappointing the chairman.

Stay Tuned for IronCraft 2 competition announcement.

Do you have the brains, the skill, the genius to Challenge this week's Iron Craftsman: Scuzzball?

Welcome to the first building competition. IronCraft is a building competition taking place on Scuzzball's server. To participate you have to be white-listed and in good standing.

Prizes: What greater honor is there than to be named an IronCraft Master? Your name will be immortalized in diamond.

Rules (in addition to Server rules)
Teams consist of no more than 6 players.
Build only with the materials provided to you by the chairman
Build only within set boundary for each team.
Violating rules will result in disqualification

Additionally, each challenge will have build restrictions and a time limit. Breaking those restrictions will result in a lower score.

How to play:
Organize yourselves into teams. There will be no more than 6 teams. Name your Team and select a team color (which will correspond to your team built site border made from colored wool), and a team leader.

The Chairman will select 3 judges from volunteers. Each competition may have different judges.

After 6 teams have signed up, the build challenge is announced. Team leaders and judges will be given the secret coordinates and warps of build sites and equipment storage.
Teams are encouraged to use the /tell player1 command to communicate or use a google doc, or pm each other.

At the end of the time limit judges will grade each build on a scale from 1-10 on the following categories:

Creativity: Is the build original, creative or copied from someone else?
Aesthetics: Is the build appealing to the Eye and sense of fun?
Execution: How well does the build meet the restrictions given?

Challenge 1
Secret Ingredient: WOOL Any color.

Build anything!
However, build it in a set distance from the portal, no more than 100 blocks and no less than 30 blocks away.
IE: You can build anywhere in the IronCraft world. However, at least one of your blocks must be within these X,Z,Y coordinates:
X:-121 to 81
Z:-76 to 136
Y: 114 (top of cloud layer)
(Sorry for the confusion I didn't realize that y was the vertical axis)

It must puncture the cloud barrier. Whether you build a mountain, build a dungeon inside, and add a small tower or build a roller coaster that pierces the heavens, it's up to you!

You have 1 week
Block restrictions: none: ask the Chairman (forbiddenwar) or any mod to spawn you objects for your build. For this first challenge, there is no secret equipment stash (unless you want to make one) and the secret ingredient will be announced at the start of the competition.

You can build anywhere in the IronCraft world within:
the coordinates given in the OP

I may expand it once teams are official, but I want each creation visible from the portal.

What happened to the specific areas bordered by colored wool for each team?

Edit: Also, "Must pierce the cloud layer" seems like a kinda random and potentially restrictive rule. On the one hand, it might be fun to see how everyone fulfills that rule in a project that wouldn't have done so otherwise, but on the other hand it could be simply annoying for other builds, like ones that are wholly underground, or underwater, or simply projects that don't have any use for that much vertical space.

Also, if you make a building with only a 100 blocks, there's no way you can have more then two vertical rows reach the skybox.

Challenge 2 will begin this. each site will be identical, however for the first wide open whatever build, I though teams should be able to pick their own sites.

It is not a rule, but a build restriction, to encourage creativity in the build. If you decide not to breach the cloud layer you will only be docked a few points in your execution category.
However, imagine a build, then imagine that same build 50 blocks up in the air! I never said it had to touch the ground.

Challenges will come which will be entirely underground or underwater, or not have need of the vertical space.

If teams can start giving me block requests, I can start generating them so they will be ready for the official start. You can do this in a PM or here. I will keep them in a secret chest until the launch or Teams can also give me coordinates on where they want their team chests, and I will place them and fill them with the tools and block requests prior to the start of the competition.

at 5pm EST the chairman (me) will be at work. I will only be on for 15 minutes during my break. I will announce the secret ingredient, the block that must be in your build. (so far every teams block request has it) and then I have to go. I will return at 8pm EST.
So those who have given me block requests already have a significant lead! After the start you can request blocks from any judge or moderator.

EDIT: Note on TNT. It is Permissible. However it was decided that TNT will not be stored in chests, for fear of hundreds of blocks migrating to the real world if any of the protections on the chest fail. That being the case, It was decided that TNT will be given directly to the team leaders, 1 block at a time, and only when they need it. Also note that if your build blows up before any of the three judges see it but after the close of the competition, you will not be allowed to rebuild it and a smoldering rubble will result in a low score. So if you are considering a self destruct in your build, make it so that at least the three judges see it before it blows. You can do this by requesting that all 3 judges tour your build at the same time.

Additional: Denver is having internet difficulty. I may not be able to appear at all today.

No, I want it to start today. The players are chomping at the bit to play. They have a week to build. And the opening isn't as important for judges. Memnarch also knows the secret ingredient so if I'm unable to appear, It can still be announced.

Actually, it's for the best that we aren't all there at 5pm. I think the server only allows 20 people at a time. And this contest may stress that limit. (6 teams of 6 players+3 judges + Chairman + Scuzzball +spectators= 40-150 people= HaHa Fried server.)

Considering how much building there has been in the last 8 hours, I wonder if 1 week is too much time. What are your thought? (Don't worry, it will stay a week, but feedback is good when planning the 2nd challenge)
Will the building ferver die down, become dull in 2 days or will it wax and wan?

Also, I think the challenges will be announced before people sign up, but the secret ingredient remains a secret until the start, it seems to be going well that way. Thoughts? Comments? Insults?

Well, I know that I was able to devote a lot of time to my project today, but will not be able to for the next few, as will Raven, so we both need to finish it later this week. I think having the time flexibility is an asset; though having the one gathered time for all players is nice, we are dealing with real life scheduling problems here. I suppose weekend competitions could work, but I favor full week ones.

I like the way that the challenge/secret ingredient were handled. I wonder, however, if future challenges will provide more limitations. "Must break the skybox" is very open; if I hadn't had my concept already rolling around in my head I probably would have spent a lot of time floundering in indecision. I like the idea of more restricted builds, especially if the time limit on said builds is shortened. Maybe lowering the total block count/selection, or maximum size of the project. Limitations such as those might also equalize the playing field between those who can devote long hours to their build and those who can only spend a few—it might emphasize creativity over persistence, at least for a couple competitions.

All in all, I'm having a good time at this.

Lady Tialait
2011-04-30, 02:30 AM
With the number of people on each team the week means that the server doesn't get full. This means more time for each person to work on their project. I think a week is a lot of time, between a week and four days depending on the theme.

AgentPaper
2011-04-30, 02:37 AM
Yeah, a week sounds like the perfect amount of time. Start on a sunday and end on a Saturday. I also like the idea of the secret ingredient not being shared right away. It might be fun if the secret ingredient were only revealed mid-way through the competition, once everyone's started, but then again that might just encourage people to not do anything until it's revealed, since they have plenty of time.

A limit on the size of the projects doesn't appeal to me all too much, but some large-ish restrictions like giving people a 100x100 area to work with would be fair. I don't like the idea of having blocks be restricted, since I'm afraid I'd run out mid-way through the project. It would also be rather difficult to monitor, compared to standard size restrictions.

At any rate, I think the whole point of this competition is to generate very large, very cool structures, not to see who's the "Best" at building. Sure, a winner will be chosen, and prizes given out, but it's just part of the fun, not a serious competition. I know I don't really care that much whether I win or not, I just want to make something cool and partake of some poorly ad-libbed japanese parody action TV happy fun time. :smallwink:

Also, this first competition was intentionally broad. I suggested that we run the first round with little to no restrictions just to get a good gauge of things. Come the next week, I'm sure everyone will have a better idea of the scope of this.

Finally, status update for Team Blue: Progress of the currently planned construction is at 40%. I'll probably build a bit more than I initially planned, though, so more likely that's closer to 25-30%

more restrictions will be added during the second compertition and afterwards, (unless seen as completely counter intuative after the first week)

as i see it, basic block types will be free to use as much as you like. but rarer block types might be limited just so people cant go "look at my gold block toilet!" for the sake of it, they will have to really think what they are going to use it for effectively

that way, one team can be directly compared to another in its use of X block type too.

thats how i see it anyway, thats not fixed yet so dont panic.

Perhaps there should be competition types? For example, this is a building contest, perhaps there should be Redstone Machine contests and dungeon contests? Or is that too specific?

Also, Team Phr4ck has almost passed the 50% completion mark. Help on the next 50% would be appreciated.

i think thats a nice idea, but would be difficult to put into practice, since not everyone is adept at redstone circuitry, but it being a prominent feature of a build may be one of the challenges, even if its only on a basic level, thus allowing for the unsure to learn, and the sure to make a great redstone machine, perhaps?

Forbiddenwar, don't know what you want to do about IronCraft due to this.(Server down)

My math is that it was down only for a few hours. I think IronCraft should still end on schedule.

However, I am seeking input from our impartial judges. Should we still end at 5pm EST? Or 9 EST?

Additionally, I am seeking input for start and end times. Saturday might conflict with the Starcraft group and D&D, however Saturday Morning might work better for players and judges. Thoughts?
Keep in mind, that has to be a time Mem, or another admin, has available to unlock and then lock the map.

Edit: also check the OP everyone. For clarity I've named Scuzzball as this challenge IronCraft Masterru. Which team, if any, can topple him? Find out soon!

I was kinda hoping there'd be a nice big official ceremony, with everyone showing off their project in turn to everyone, not just the judges. Then again, I suppose that would require letting on more than just the normal limit of 20 people on at once, so I guess that's probably not possible. Perhaps it would be better if one or more of the judges simply streamed the judging so everyone could see it, including people that don't frequent the server.

Since there's no mods on, whenever a mod does come on, could I get the following materials placed into the 4 chests on top of my project? I need:

32 stacks of glass
16 stacks of iron blocks
16 stacks of planks
8 stacks of wooden stairs
8 stacks of ladders
4 stacks of signs
8 stacks of redstone
4 stacks of torches
1 stack each of beds, chests, and dispensers.

I'll also need a large amount of swords, armor, and bows. 2 stacks of each type/material should suffice.

Feel free to add additional chests if need be. This should be the last of what I need, short of a few bits here and there.

End of Challenge Schedule:

Here is what I'm thinking:
On Friday at exactly 5 EST Mem locks the world so there will be no more edits. Then Judging starts. (Judges can get a preliminary idea of scores now, but remember nothing is set in stone until the world is locked. A team may decide to level they're entry and pull an all nighter to build something better.)

Judging will need to be finished within 1 week of the close of the challenge.(next friday)

Meanwhile I will gather Screenshots of each entry.

Judges, post the scores here or PM to me.

I will edit the OP to include scores and screen shots.

If that is done early, I will post the time for the award ceremony, giving at least 48 hours time so people know when to be on and make arrangements for streaming, or Fraping.

If the Judges need the full week, the closing ceremony will coincide with the start or the next challenge on Saturday Morning, May 14.
I will be on, award prizes put names to the trophies in the trophy hall, then announce the secret ingredient for the next challenge.

While the judges are judging I will start the next challenge thread

You should take some screenies of the projects while they're in progress as well. I guess it's a bit late to start doing that for this week, but it'd be fun seeing how the projects progress over the course of the week.

I think that it would be best to announce the winners and state the scores at the award ceremony instead of posting them here. More suspense that way.

Of course, once the awards thing is done, then the scores will be posted here.

Okay, I'm stopping work on my project, as I started a bit early as I didn't think I was going to enter. Also, I remembered we have a wiki.

Here. (http://uf.serveftp.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)

Unnamed, unmaintained, no logo, and with little content, I forgot it existed. If you want, you can create a few pages, and I'll give anyone who wants access to the main page.

Oh, and the people who also get credit are JBovee, and... Dammit, who helped me build?

Agreed. Judges PM me your scores.

Are we set to lock the world for everyone except judges and myself at 5 EST? (3 MST)

I'm afraid due to RL, I have to resign Team Baxter from the challenge. Maybe in the future, I'll finish the Webbed Towers.

Once judging is complete, just ask and we'll unlock ironcraft for you to finish the towers.
I hope you can participate some time in the future.

I have judged them, and given my scores. they add up to 100 total spread between the 6 teams (i think i was being evil because i ended up only giving out about 70 points at first and had to go back and make up for it)

good luck teams

One thing to note: In SMP, each player potentially sees the world completely differently from others based on what texture pack they're using, unless I'm mistaken, so a great stone brick tower with recessed candles might look to someone else to be a great heap of jumbled stones with jack-o-lanterns randomly placed in the walls.

In the interests of making sure everyone is seeing the same thing, perhaps we should have a specific "official texture pack" for ironcraft? Perhaps it could change each week even, to fit with the week's theme.

This is a good point. I'll make sure when I photo these entries, I'll use the default pack

I've only used custom texture packs when an adventure map wants me to, so I judged on the default textures.

Final description of my entry:

Airship The Coliseum
The Coliseum is an aerial, mobile staging ground for gladiatorial battles, complete with multiple viewing platforms, a lobby, and an ultra-high security prison to keep the dangerous combatants contained until the battle begins.

As a prototype of the Arena-class airship line, it is small and not outfitted for any voyage longer than a day, but is fully functional in all other regards, capable of flying over any desired battleground for it's competitors and deploying them. Only minimal preparation of the battleground itself is required.

Other than that, I'd also like to officially request that I be allowed to make a few minor adjustments to the airship now that the judging is done. I just want to finish off the last two towers in the arena itself and to add some engines to the airship, which I forgot to do.

A note about scores:
The competition was fierce. in places just a few points separated contenders.
Part of the fierceness and range of scores was the open ended nature of this contest. Future contests may have more restrictions, which while make things more challenging, will also make judging easier. For how do you compare a 3d maze adventure with a blue sculpture with an elaborate minecart delivery system? In short, you can't, and all the entries are worth exploring.
