Bwahaha, that's awesome.

Of course, Binders don't typically worship Vestiges nor were most of the Vestiges ever gods, but that's besides the point. That's still awesome.

It's part of the founding ethos. Hipsters hung out in coffee shops and used Macs before either was really big.

Go back 15 years, and you won't see a coffee bar on every street corner. Back then, apple was used by people who scoffed at those IBM-compatible fools with their viruses and their plethora of different programs and games.

Bohemia hasn't been part of Germany since the days of the Holy Roman Empire. Like the rest of the Czech Republic it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the Trianon treaty in 1920, which was the part of the Versailles treaty covering the surrender of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Per that treaty the nation of Czechoslovakia was founded and Bohemia came to be part of that, with its largest city and historical, Prague, becoming the national capital. With the division of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1991, Bohemia became part of the Czech Republic still keeping Prague as the capital. As a further note, the Czech word for Bohemia is Čechy, which is of course the word that Czech is derived from.

I think an important part of "hipster" is the idea that they, unlike the goths or emos or whatever, wouldn't avoid mainstream social circles — they would just be standing their all ironically, making fun of it. Or something like that.

Yeah with some very minor tweaking, this could easily be made viable.

The only problem I see in there is "any grid direction the Gust of Wind blows" being too long.

"Any grid square Gusts of Wind blow" would befit better in terms of amount of syllables, but doesn't sound as right.

These are the only places I have trouble...-10 is pronounced Negative Ten...and that adds 4 syllables to a line that is otherwise very short. The only way I could see it being done is to have another singer come in at the end and add it as an after thought.

Mama, just brought a man (to minus ten)

I'm really not sure how to preserve that line without making it way too long.

And Bahamut...is it a long U sound? Or is it a short U sound we'd use? Bahamut(e) or Bahamut(t) because I think the short U sound is the correct one...though that wouldn't flow nicely. Ehlonna would work here though very nicely. And given that we're discussing an Ascetic Monk with VoP...a forest god fits the fluff pretty nicely.

I use the short u for Bahamut and meant -10 to be pronounced "minus ten".

Ehlonna isn't as "known"/popular as Bahamut is though, plus considering we're talking Asmodeus, the big ol' dragon fits perfectly.

Pffft...you worship Bahamut? That guy is way mainstream. What does he do for the people man!? Nothing! He's all about magic items, and he's made of freakin' platinum dude! He's so corporate! My god? She supports my way of life. My power is organic! It comes from the earth man...she loves the forest and trees, and my VoP. She's the perfect fit for this awesome song. Au natural man.

Ehlonna fits the cadence of the song better. She also fits the VoP concept for our monk friend better. As she is NG, our Lawful-good monk character is but a single step away on the alignment ladder. :smalltongue:

How does that even strike you as odd? Ancestor worship is, or was, a pretty common thing to do. Worshiping the dead has plenty of real world examples.

I mean in a D&Dverse. Goids grant clerics their powers right? How can a worshiper of a dead got have any powers whatsoever if the god in question is too dead to grant them?

Not quite, Clerics can also worship ideas or ideals and it gives them power as well. So worshipping a dead god is really no different than worshipping a live one with the notable exception of not having them talk back when you get a high enough level.

Two classes do this mechanically:
Ur-Priest: The Ur-Priest is about stealing gods' divine power. Normally, this is associated with some great evil heresy, but there's a bit in the Adaptation section for a Cleric of a dead god using Ur-Priest's techniques to continue using Divine spells while he searches for a way to resurrect the dead god. He's not using his god's granted abilities, but stealing spells from other gods.
Binder: If the god became a vestige upon death (as with Amon, arguably with Eurynome, sort of with Geryon, maybe with Savnok, definitely with Shax, and most famously with Tenebrous), a Binder can gain powers by entering into a pact with these vestiges. Binders don't necessarily worship the vestiges, but some do, and there's a prestige class, Tenebrous Apostate, that's all about worshipping Tenebrous and scheming to bring the Shadow that Was back.

On the topic of D&D songs and being ironic and liking things that aren't mainstream...my gaming group and I came up with this little tune a year or so ago when reminiscing about the 2e/3e transition and all the edition wars that it brought about. When I saw this thread I knew I had to transcribe it from my old notes. Hope you like it.

It's Still D&D To Me
With apologies to Billy Joel

What's the matter with the cloak I'm wearing,
Can't you tell it's Cha +5?
Wishin' I could buy more magic items....
Welcome back to the Sigil Hive.
What's the dark on where you've been lately, cutter?
You can't buy magic, are you some kinda nutter?
Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new game,
Funny, but it's still D&D to me.

What's the matter with the mount I'm riding?
That you pulled it from an Upper Plane.
Should I get a set of +1 flaming horseshoes?
Oh, sure, why not add demon bane?
In the old days, it was more than just a pony;
Now that it's a summon, it's just plain phony!
2nd edition, 3rd edition, either way it's my edition,
Still D&D to me.

Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in Dragon,
'Cause it's always been the same old scene:
There's a new game in town
But you can't get a run-down from reviews in a magazine
Aimed at your average teen!

How about a charge-spec Paladin 5
With some dips for a feat or three?
You might really like a plain 10 Fighter...
...well, it always worked fine for me....
We didn't need feats from a half-dozen splatbooks,
Our Fighting-Men thrived on a good set of plot hooks!
THAC0, Base Attack, the difference don't mean jack—
It's still D&D to me.

What's the matter with the spell I'm casting?
Don't you know it has a range of touch!?
With the new rules I can cast in melee
And not worry about miscasts too much.
Don't you know new casters have it easy?
The thought of any damage used to make them queasy!
Armored mages, spellbook pages, even with all these changes
It's still D&D to me.

Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new game
Funny, but it's still D&D to me.

Robes of archmagi and petrified kittens
Cloaks of resistance and spell-storing mittens
Bags of devouring tied up with string
These are a few of my favorite things

Rings of evasion and iron bands of binding
Ioun stones and fire staves and potions of finding
A deck of illusions that's missing the king
These are a few of my favorite things

Bracers of armor and rings of protection
Shields enchanted with arrow deflection
Those funny horseshoes that can give your horse wings

"DM, I've made many, many human characters.
I realize, of course, that there's nothing wrong with being human.
But it's not that interesting either!
So would it be so terrible if I had just a +7 LA?"

If I were a mind flayer,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy brains,
If I were an il-li-thid!
Wouldn't have to learn things,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy squid,
Yidle-diddle-didle-illi-thid.

I'd build a great stone statue with thralls by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A twenty-foot monument with blasphemous runes below.
There would be one rune that's a four-sided pentagon,
And one sphere with 350º,
And a triangle with two right angles, just for show!

I'd eat my fill of wizards and leaders and rich men,
Just to absorb their juicy brains.
And each great sec-ret and PIN number and artwork,
Would further my long and glorious reign.
They would say "There goes an illithid."

If I were a mind flayer,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy brains,
If I were an il-li-thid!
Wouldn't have to learn things,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy squid,
Yidle-diddle-didle-illi-thid.

I'd see my party, those morons, suitably enthralled
With eyes fogged, blankly white and glazed.
Obeying my whims to my heart's delight.
I see them giving their lives many times to protect me.
Oh, maybe I'll even have them raised!
Scrambling to my bidding, day and night.

The most important people in the world would have to fawn on me!
They would need me to advise them,
Because I didn't leave them free will.
"If you please, Lord Illithid..."
"Pardon me, Lord Illithid..."
Giving me power that would give a devil chills!
And it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong;
When you're a mind flayer, you don't have to care!

If I ate brains, I'd have the knowledge that I lack
To cast spells and sneak and Know: Nature.
And listen to the gods gossip in their halls.
And I could suck secrets right out of anybody,
As an at-will ability.
That would be the coolest thing of all.

If I were a mind flayer,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy brains,
If I were an il-li-thid!
Wouldn't have to learn things,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy squid,
Yidle-diddle-didle-illi-thid.

DM who governs the options of the players!
You decree when we go and where!
Would it spoil some vast detailed lair?
If... I were a mind flaaayeeer?!"

I'd apologise for taking this thread off-topic, but I don't even know what the topic ever was in the first place. Anyways, here we go:
I don't get the rampant hatred of hipsters. As mentioned earlier, hipsters have replaced emos as the butt of stereotypes and jokes (and don't get me started with "emos." Whomever decided to take a social group based on exclusion, emotional sensitivity, and depression, and focus the hatred of a generation on them was pretty messed up.). Not all of this is directed at this thread, but it seems like the underlying pattern in real life. I've been labeled a hipster. Many times. Why? I don't know. I tend to have different musical tastes than the majority of the population, so it would make sense that I like bands most people don't. Is it because I'm a hipster? No. When I point out I like people like Lady Gaga, I'm told I only like those groups ironically. I don't do things because they're "cool" or "ironic," I do them because I like to. Unfortunately, this means "I was into it before it was cool" which is another stereotype. There is literally no way out of it. I live in Berkeley, which is considered a "capital" of the "hipster world." Sure, there's a lot of people who listen to alternative music and the like, a lot of people who wear plaid shirts, a lot of people who do whatever. But they do these things because they want to, not because they feel pressured into it. It's like criticizing people on this board for playing D&D. People don't play D&D because it's the "cool thing to do" among nerdier crowds, people play because they want to play. It's enjoyable.
Which brings me to a larger point. Everyone is going to fit into a stereotype if you simplify matters enough. People everywhere like beer. But if you live in the American South and drink a lot of beer, you're a redneck. People everywhere fry food. But fry food in Scotland and suddenly you become a stereotype. I could go on and on. These stereotypes do have roots in reality, but they grow until the stereotypes become more powerful than the actual characteristics of people being labeled. Then, these stereotypes become a prism through which any and every action of a social group is viewed and it becomes a self-fulfilling and self-strengthening prophecy.
For the tl dr crowd: What's wrong with liking things others don't?

...wait, you're so unconformist that you like hipsters? Wow. that's so Hipster.
[/completelynonseriousjoke]

Also, Causation != Correlation. People who drink a lot in the south aren't auto red necks. People who are red necks also tend drink a lot. People aren't hipsters cause they like some obscure stuff, EVERYONE likes something obscure that most others don't. Hipsters like it because being unknown gives them a high horse to look down at people on, cause obviously if you like anything popular in a non-ironic way you are a sheep and don't get the joke. And it's damn annoying.

Having very little notoriety or fame. Being not especially good but appealing to limited degree of tastes etc...

I'm sure everyone has a band they like thats too niche for radio play, or a 2 star movie that they really like. Maybe an uncommon activity that they do as a hobby. To paraphrase Cracked, mainstream stuff is mainstream because it applies to a very broad group of people and tastes, which is why Transformers is more popular overseas than, say, Brokeback Mountain. Giant robots appeal to a larger audience than the perils of homosexual cowboy love. NOT that either of those is obscure, but it shows the rationale.

I'm sure everyone has a band they like thats too niche for radio playWell, they almost never play anything good in radio (or at least I haven't met anyone who'd say otherwise).

or a 2 star movie that they really like.2 stars by what system? I often read a movie review site that pretty much hates every movie I like, but then again they use phrases like "politically correct" (not even "too politically correct") and "strong humanist values" as slurs. (I read it for kicks. :smalltongue:)

Maybe an uncommon activity that they do as a hobby.Define "uncommon". How many people have to do/like something for it to be "uncommon"? :smalltongue:

I almost missed that and I was thinking, MAN this guy is really agitated about something. :TokenNonthreateningSmiley:

Obscure is a subjective term (The "i'll know it when I see it" defense comes to mind) so its meaning can vary person to person. I never go by professional movie reviews because lets face it, "oscar bait" is a legitimate term, but on the generic scale of 5 stars we can all agree that two-star is mediocre. If you live in an area that has a college radio station you'll probably hear the awesomest music ever that won't hit the main stations. Guilty Pleasures didn't mean Bad=Obscure but rather a reinforcement of Mainstream != Like or Quality != Like, although I agree that for it to be a guilty pleasure it must be at least a little famous or infamous, either as a work or as part of an identifiable group/genre. You reading the CWar for build help isn't a GP in that many people know CWar, but you trying to make a good Dungeons and Dragons character might be (thinking larger populace, I realize this is a DnD forum) for an example of Genre Fame but not Individual Fame. Guys.
- Almost everyone here is into Dungeons and Dragons, which is not something enjoyed by the mainstream.
- What's more, a large number of people from this forum will talk about other, less popular, alternative systems, which are less popular but better than Dungeons and Dragons.
- Another group of people love to talk about how much better D&D was before 4th edition, where it made the mistake of appealing to the more mainstream video game audiences, ie selling out.

I know we all love to make fun of hipsters, but by the loose definition of hipster we have chosen to adopt, this forum is mostly hipsters. You could easily tell me the difference is the reasons for these behaviors, but since one of the key aspects of hipsters is not being self-aware, it doesn't rule this out at all.

So yes, I make fun of hipsters. I make fun of hipsters sarcastically.*
