Take Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a), it specifically says that it's tracked as a separate ability from an Animal Companion class feature, but it doesn't say that the same critter can't be named the beneficiary of both. It would be an extra +7 HD and other benefits for your otherwise weak Animal Companion, though if you get a 'Level -X' companion the Wild Cohort benefits would be at an additional -3 levels.

I'd get Brutal Throw (CV) and some Gloves of Endless Javelins (MIC) to make him a very capable ranged combatant as well.

With any sort of stealth skills you'll want Darkstalker from Lords of Madness.

You might want to reread the Wild Cohort rules.

Special: Druids and rangers who take the wild cohort feat gain an animal cohort in addition to their animal companion. Although the two abilities are similar, they follow different sets of rules and must be tracked separately.

Edit: OP, are you interested in hearing alternative class suggestions that maintain the flavor?

im open to hearing it all, hey if you feel that you know a PRC that shoul fit the concept SHOOT...

Concept: mercenary who when accepted a job finnish it, specialises in scouting, recon jobs but is still kick ass in combat. LN human

Wilderness rogue//hit'n'run fighter seems to do what you wish with less overlap between the two sides, getting most everything a ranger//rogue would gain and then some.

What sort of fighting style would you prefer? Archery (sniping or volley), melee (TWF, THF or S&B) or something else altogether? Or a mix?

My concern is that Ranger doesn't have much to offer a Rogue, mainly full BAB and a slightly better HD. Warblade can do the first while helping the second much more, and Tiger Claw works well in place of the Ranger's TWF style; you'll have to get the TWF feat the old-fashioned way, but it's really worth it. Wilderness Rogue (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#rogueVariantWilderness Rogue) gets your nature skills back if you're interested in those.
