Let's Play Fallout: New Vegas (Diary of Elryia)

Welcome to my playthrough of New Vegas. I will be going through New Vegas, this time with a character who isn't exactly the cream of the crop. The nicest of fellows. To be blunt, she might be the one to kick you in the head.

I'm sure you've seen other playthroughs, and I see one already on GiTP. The other one I see however, is one of a goody-two-shoes wastelander, helping the weak.

There will be a story behind this character I am writing for. She will have a background before her incident with the 'man with the checked suit.' That, however, will be discovered along the journey. It would be far too boring if I told you right now.

I am playing with a 'few' modifications, to add to the flavor of the game. If you have any to suggest, you can do so by posting, obviously. The ones currently active are:

EPISODE 1: Sunny Smiles Way Too Much
Day 1:

I remember only a few things from the days before the incident. I get an aching headache whenever I think about it. My name is Elryia. I was a courier for the Mojave Express. That's... everything.

The nice doctor here told me that I was shot in the head. Twice. By a man with a checkered suit. Some robot dug me out of what was going to be my grave. Fantastic...

He had me go through some tests, to make sure my head came out alright. I'd say he did a lousy job... all I have is a splitting headache.

After all of that, he gave me my old outfit, my courier papers, and something called a Pipboy 3000. Keeps track of my health, and even has this convenient journal feature.

He told me I should keep track of what I do, in case I get shot in the head again. Like that'll happen.

I wandered about the room I woke up in for a bit, and found a damaged gun. I had a familiar feeling when I picked it up, and it took just a few minutes of tinkering before I had it working again. As if I knew how to fix it...

I headed out into the storm to meet someone named Sunny Smiles. Ugh... what a fruity name. The Doc said she could re-teach me how to survive out in the desert. Since he figures I already knew, and my brain was just scrambled by the bullets. Fine, fine...

That's right. The dog better not bite, unless it wants a head full of bullets... that I don't have... because all I have is the gun... wonderful. I dropped the Doc's name, and she immediately offered to help me out. The Doc must have some kind of reputation around here.

She handed me a rifle of some kind, and looked surprised. I knew how to hold it, even aiming down the sights, without a word. She said that the body remembers what the mind forgets. Fine by me, guess it means I won't need much training.

I head up the hill with her to get some real practice. Something called Geckos. Aren't they small lizards?

I heard some screaming from further down the way, so I made my way up there without Sunny. I found three Geckos, large lizard things, around some woman from Goodsprings. I think.

I took aim down the sight at the Geckos, lining up a good shot, but my hands shook. My aim moved from the Geckos to the woman, and before I knew it...

I... shot her. The Geckos started trying to rip off pieces of her body, so I filled them with led too. Why did I aim at the woman... I don't get it...

I head back to Goodsprings. On the way, I come across some man wearing an NCR uniform. I felt a tinge of resent for him, but it faded. I don't know what it means, but he made me an offer.

Said that he wanted to take over this town. Can you even call it a town? It's more like a collection of buildings. More of a village.

He said there's a pretty penny in it if I help him take over the town. I need to take out some guy named Ringo, who's been hiding in the town, and then help with the militia.

These people haven't helped much in finding the man in the suit... and I'm sure the caps will help me on my way. So I agreed.

I shot him right between the eyes. He didn't even get a shot off. I... I didn't feel any remorse this time. At least, it wasn't as bad as before. Is it this easy to kill?

He had quite a bit of a stockpile up here. A few guns, some whiskey, food, and water. I'll live well tonight.

I stopped by the Doc's office and asked for some medical supplies. If I was going to be on the road for a while, I'd need some. He was... kind enough to relinquish some of his for the 'kind injured man on the highway.'

Well, if I want those caps, I'll have to take care of my part of the deal. Aside from Ringo, we have to deal with the militia. The rifles more fit for this than the 9 MM I've been carrying around.

Poor Sunny. She smiled 'till the day she... well, you know. I'm not being realsitic though... someone's missing. The shop owner agreed to supply the 'NCR' with equipment in exchange for being alive. But... the Doc!

The moment I opened his door, I heard him shouting "You're a Coward."

He had a laser pistol! Have I told you how much those burn? Well, if I didn't, I'm telling you now. They burn. ALOT.

But it was ironic... I thanked the Doc for patching me up. I told him that the NCR offered much more in the way of finding the man in the checkered suit. The caps I need, and a direction to go.

I took care of business with the Doc, and had myself a new Laser Pistol. Well... kind of new. It looked pretty beat up actually.

Heh... looks like the NCR is short some hands. He told me that not all of them would be as kind as him though, so watch out on the roads. They might shoot first, and ask questions later.

I usually don't play evil; my next playthrough will be more neutral (and my other favorite character; the energy weapon nut).

Anyway, I strongly recommend all the mods I have on my mod list.

Day 2:

I woke up in Doc Mitchell's house... or what was his house. I figured I would rest before heading over to the prison. And leaving Goodsprings, of course.

I talked to the shopkeep and picked up a new modification for my shotgun. Will keep it in better condition, hopefully.

I took Cobb's advice and donned one of the extra NCR outfits left after the fight. He said the residents would trust me a bit more.

Took some time to find the prison. By then it was starting to get dark.

I told the nice gentleman that I'll work for caps and a place to sleep. I'm on my way to to Primm, since it's the only lead I have, but having some money in my pocket can't hurt.

As of currently, I don't intend to introduce anything magic-wise into the New Vegas playthrough.

It was much more simple than that. Dream Sequence. Figured it would semi-obvious with it happening before Day 2 thing. But I understand.

That's how it is in a lot of New Vegas stories. The Courier doesn't exactly remember his/her past, but may recover those memories over their journey.

I let the nice man know that I can handle myself. I've dealt with convicts... just not the way he's thinking.

I head into the NCR camp first though, to try to weasel some information out of one of them about anything on the prison.

That said: Was it really required to slaughter an entire town? I mean.. come on, powder gangers SUCK.

Aww well I shouldn't be surprised folks, this is the same guy who betrayed his entire party in his frist D&D game EVER and got most of them killed, not shocked he plays homicidal maniacs that make Glados look like a sweet innocent girl.

She said she had an implant that could stabilize them. They were an amazing creation... had they been working properly, I'd have 20/20 vision. Perhaps even better.

I started my trek towards Nellis... it would be a long... long walk. I decided to have Veronica stay behind on this one.

Deus Ex is... hmmm... well, fun? In many ways it's well-done, in others not so much.

It's more an "action game with RPG elements" like Mass Effect; as opposed to an "RPG with action elements" like Fallout or Elder Scrolls.
You can run through the game using a "cover" system shooting up all your enemies if you wish, but that is not the preferred nor recommended method.

The best way to play is stealthy... sneaking around, choking out your foes non-lethally. It also has a great little hacking mini-game that I find loads of fun. If you like Metal Gear or Splinter Cell, you may appreciate that kind of style.

The RPG elements are more about choosing your characters "augments" and taking on side-quests in city hubs where combat isn't an urgent thing. Of course talking to NPC's goes along with that.

The music is particularly good and atmospheric, but the graphics are a bit dated. Looks like a really good last-gen, but a just-above-mediocre present gen game.

The story is a big grabber... very sci-fi, sorta cyberpunkish. Makes a lot of allegories to financial sector government takeover and the dangers of a corporate media... if your into that sorta thing.

PS3. It doesn't belong to me, so my progress is a bit slow. Playing any modern game on my current laptop is pretty much out of the question.

Overall it's a fun game, heavy on the eye candy compared to Fallout 1 and 2. Sometimes I just wander around and look at the scenery. Aiming outside of V.A.T.S. is tricky for me, since I'm more used to shooting with a mouse.

*Nod* Yes, I'm playing quite the terribly evil character. And it does infact seem like it is "Evil for Evil's Sake." I'm not the best storyteller, but I will say that there is a reason this character is actually evil. Hinted at briefly in earlier chapters, and will be more so in chapters coming.

But honestly, part of the reason "I" am doing it this way, is because... well, I've never done a truly evil playthrough. And I wanted to try it. I'll be attempting to work it further into the plot so it doesn't seem arbitrary.

And Side Note, I am enjoying Deus Ex... it is fun.

To be honest, I never play evil. I don't think I can put myself through it. I simply don't enjoy making jackass decisions since in my experience such decisions usually don't pan out as well as making otherwise more reasonable decisions.

Granted I take some pragmatic decisions if I think it's more fair that way. For example, in the sidequest where you deal with the Follower guy who took water from the NCR, I chose to extort him for his silence since while I wanted to let Westside have water it also felt like not letting them off the hook.

Same here. I'm happy to swipe unattended items, but major evil decisions just don't feel natural. My favorite character archetype in the Fallout series is thief, btw.

I generally play a game once as a good guy and then if I like it, I'll play again as a bad guy, just for the contrast. Lawful Good does feel natural to me, but sometimes it's good to break out of the mold, stretch myself characteristically.

What's nice about this LP is i lets me see a unique playthrough, as most LP are goody goodies, perhaps in part due to peer pressure of the audience. Please don't cave to this pressure, I like reading this character's wild, unpredictable evil diary.

I find that when I play evil, I just end up killing everything in sight, which in this sort of game gets really boring, really quickly.

I.... I just killed the entire Brotherhood at Lvl3... It was so easy it hurt.

Here is How it Happened
I was doing the classic grab the Stealth Boy and run past the Deathclaws with it but was using Hidden Valley as a Short Cut and saw the Patrol entering the base.. So I followed 'hey I thought lets go do the beginnings of their quest line!'.
I go to the NCR Ranger, then I tell him the Brotherhood is here so he removed the explosive collar at which point they 4Brotherhood Member enter. There is a pair of those insta-kill grenade traps in the hallway their going down and I have a Frag Grenade. Boom all 4Brotherhood Members are dead and so is the Ranger... I don't get any Infamy for that from either group. So I take the Brotherhood Gauss Rifles, 3in total and the 1Gattling Laser. I put on the Ranger Armor because it better then any armor I have. Then I go back to the Brotherhood Base expecting them all to be neutral... Nope all hostile.
So yeah I have a high science so I can talk past the Securitron at the Vegas Gate and the entire brotherhood hates me. I waited 1week no change their permanently hostile. So I kill Ramos and turn on the turret system.... Yup all it cost me was a programmers digest and some mentats. So yeah in the End with a Gauss Rifle, and a Hunting Rifle I killed all the Brotherhood and dragged theirs bodies into a pile taking all their stuff and putting it in Ramos filing cabinet for later. And only when I kill this one member I missed, aka the guy that spawns when you leave did I get 'Vilified' status. Yup so no Veronica.

I killed them all. And I dragged myself back to the Auto-Doc, to get healed up. He may not be able to guarantee it, but I'd rather be reunited with my brain, than without it.

Episode 21: Memories

Vault 106.

My home. At least, it used to be. I was young back then... twelve, maybe thirteen. At least, those are the earliest memories I can remember even now.

My mother... heh. Down there, it was a game of survival, just like in the wasteland. Everyone in that vault had some kind of condition. Always paranoid, like a bunch of crazy people.

We had it too... my mother and I. But we were different. We trusted eachother, and that made all the difference. She used to tell me, "It wasn't always this way."

But... she died protecting me. The vault had opened, and someone from the outside came in. Another vault-man... but he had "101" printed on his suit. A lot of the crazier residents just tried to kill him, but mom ran out to reason with him.

He shot her, in the head. Really... I don't blame him. I wish I could... but if I were in his situation, I might've done the same. He came in, he looted, and he left. He only looked mildly interested in anything that was going on... but he didn't notice me.

I got my things together... I was 16 now... we'd survived for so long in the vault, I didn't really know what to expect. But there were weapons... pistols, knives in the vault, and I took them with me, out into the Capital Wasteland.

Giant mole rats... scorpions, and even other humans had tried to kill me out there. But I found friendlies, people in a place called Arefu. I stayed with them for a while; we supported eachother, like mother and I.

I kept hearing stories about this "101" guy, and his 'heroics' in the wasteland. The radio spoke of him often, this Three Dog person.

Arefu was nice and safe... but I couldn't help but want to travel. The world was pretty desolate. I wanted to see more of it... find something. Anything better than such a miserable place.

The more I traveled, the more I was attacked. Raiders constantly trying to kill me for my possessions... or God forbid, capture me for... worse. I killed them all. Not one would live if they messed with me.

I found this during my travels. It only got worse from there, since my curiousity got the better of me. There was... actual aliens. Well, a dead one by the ship. It's not impossible. I saw it with my own eyes.

I was going to investigate more... but suddenly, I was lifted into the air... they had another ship.

Aliens... they were experimenting on me. Something.. .about my face. No... my eyes. I could see them for a while, then everything was dark.

When I woke... the world just... looked different. Clear. They did something... to me. ****ing aliens.

I was locked in a cell with some security guard from Rivet City, called herself Jessica. She was freaking out... I mean, I was too, but I guess I remember it more clearly now.

But... wouldn't you know it, I spent... I don't know how long there. Maybe a few weeks? But... they brought in a new prisoner. HE just HAD to be involved.

Mr. "101" himself showed up. Staged a fight with a girl down the hall, and escaped, letting us all out. Thanked him kindly, cursing him internally, and helped him and his gang fight their way to the bridge, to take down another alien craft trying to take on our home. Really?

I was allowed to leave the ship, and I just... left. That was too much for me... I was done.

A few weeks later, I was back at my vault. My original home. Vault 106. I found out the entire Vault was in an experiment... some kind of drugs in the air that drove us all insane. **** him. **** the damn whole thing for creating such a system.

As I was studying all the files... everything left behind, more people came to the vault. They wanted... something. No... someone.

A bunch of men in some sort of powered armor, claiming to be "The United States Government." A man in a trench coat stepped out from behind them, calling himself "Colonel Augustus Autumn," and telling me that I'm going to tell them what they want to know.

Right... piss off.

They wanted to know what happened at the "Alien Spacecraft." Somethin about advanced technologies that could put an end to the "Brotherhood of Steel," whoever they were.

I didn't tell them anything. I took out a parting gift from Mr. "101," some sort of flaming sword, and tore straight through his armored goons. Mr. Autumn took off running, claiming I'd regret committing treason. Right.

I moved on, trying to never stay in one place for too long... the "Enclave" decided I was a threat, and often sent more armored goons after me.

Eventually, I left the Capital Wasteland, and headed west. It wasn't worth risking my life against the Enclave when they wouldn't stop coming.

To New Vegas...

I picked up a job in New Vegas, and started to make a name for myself as a Courier for the Mojave Express. Something simple. I still carried a gun, but I didn't expect to be shot on sight by every other human out there, or expect to find Supermutants around every corner.

Well, I finally got a job to deliver a package TO New Vegas proper. I'd never been there... you need a lot of caps to get in. That, or you need friends.

Some sort of Platinum Chip was to be delivered to a Casino. I set out... and I ran into Benny and his groupies. But,.. you know the rest after that, don't you, diary?

Shot twice in the head, and I couldn't remember a thing. I guess this is where **** gets real, eh?

Exposition in regards to Elryia:
Angry mostly. A generally bad life before New Vegas gave her a pretty 'angry' or at the very least depressing outlook on life as she knows it.

She lost her memory from two bullets to the head, but she kept this nagging angry feelings in the back of her head since then. Glimpses of her past in flashes simply added to it, showing her the terrible things of the wasteland (such as Raiders, and even fellow residents of a vault trying to kill her) without giving her any real context.

She started viewing everyone around her as a potential threat. The drug treatments from Vault 106 remained as conditioning, keeping her pretty paranoid at all times in regards to it. She ended up deciding that she'd surround herself with the 'biggest, baddest threat in the Mojave, Caesar's Legion.'

She proved herself pretty effectively, and it worked out for her, because people are less likely to screw with someone who has friends. At the end of the day, she's got some major mental problems, but some of those will clear up with her memory back.

Also... **** Lonesome Road. It completely contradicted the memories past I wrote up, so I've got to do some clever image-use and re-writing to make any of it make sense.

I returned home from that hell hole, armed with my memories once again. But as I walked up the stairs to Lucky 38, I found a package waiting for me.

Regardless, I snuck around, using a Stealth Boy to avoid all of the Rangers, and snuck up into one of the towers. Took out the ranger up there from behind, right in the head.

You do need to head for the Long 15 out past Mojave Outpost and introduce yourself to the NCR Colonel there if you haven't already, I've fought his Legion counterpart, 'twas a great fight won by a .50 Match bullet between his eyes and my trusty Assault Carbine.
