View Full Version : If you could have ANY creature in the whole game as a Familiar, what would it be?

If you could choose ANY creature at all, any size, any type, as a Familiar (lets say you were a God or something) what would it be.

(Oh and I know I said any, but I'd prefer if you didn't list Constructs.)

Depends.

If you're *actually* a god or something, then it's... mostly irrelevant.
What's your cheese tolerance? Deities in D&D have stats. Pick one. Or the Sarruk, which can get you there.

Otherwise, it does matter what you are - because you'll want something that either covers your weaknesses, boosts your strengths, or both.

A half-orc?

Half-orcs are awesome. ^_^

What I would do with a half-orc familiar is another question. Probably play cards. Or Brawl.

There's a divine ability that makes all creatures of a given type within a mile your familiar. This ordinarily limits to standard familiar-type animals.

With this, though...

Go human. All humans within a mile are your familiars, and use your skill ranks, as well as some other properties. Imagine what could be done with this...

Are we assuming D&D or RL for this?

Eh, whatever.

RL: A talking cat. Whether that's a Tibbit who stays in kitty form or an Awakened Cat or simply a cat with a Pearl of Speech on her tongue, I want a talking cat.

D&D: Pseudodragon. Yeah, it's not particularly 'out there' or 'special' and you can acquire it already, but I think they're kinda cool. S'all cute and attention whoring and stuff ;p

Also the obligatory Succubus/Incubus/Nymph suggestion.

A zombie, so when my lazy character is tasked to do something and pawns it off on his mindless zombie familiar--not only is it not done--but then he can yell, "Stupid zombie!"..and it won't take offense..because its a zombie.

And it'd be way cooler than a skeleton because you'd be able to groom it as you liked.

This man speaks the truth. Kids, stay safe. Use protection (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/deathWard.htm), and don't bring just one.

There are anti-blindness goggles in the MIC, so the Nymph can join too. Alternatively, have sex in an AMF.

IRL: I'd probably go with a Blink Dog. Sure, they're not really 'familiar'-ish, but damn. It'd be nice to have someone around who I could count on to watch my back.

In D&D, I'd probably trade my familiar for another ACF.

The part where one reduces you to a blob of smoldering dead drained flesh, and the other makes you blind just by looking at them.
There are ways around that. In fact, both abilities can be ignored by the creature simply choosing to not use them, and presumably your familiar would obey your orders in that regard.

As a mortal (both in D&D and real life) I'd have to go with Puck, because Robin Goodfellow can make for an excellent ally and rather entertaining friend. Also I have a tendency towards plotiness and he might still have some Xanatos's notes (or better yet access to his computer).

As a god... Shadows. All of them. Even yours.

Any creature as a familiar... there are the obvious (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101587) power (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/dragonEpic.htm#prismaticDragon) choices. (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19869366/The_most_powerful_character._EVER.) but I'm not certain that I would want my familiar for power reasons,

Hmm... well If I were a character, even with all the crazy options, I'd want a Siberian Weasel large enough to rest on my shoulder.

But if I were building a character with access to any familiar... Well a Demilich familiar would be fun, even if it was nerfed from being to a high powered wizard to a simple gem filled flying skull/hand/small set of bones. Although that may not fit thematically... Elemental could be a fun familiar... Question really seems to me what type of Character/God am I and how can my familiar suit my theme.

Yeah, the Savage species version is different. I was going to make a 20 headed Styx dragon for an enemy in an online game. That many heads+a breath weapon that scales according to HD equals 1260d6 or an average of 4410 damage in one turn. My Paladin would have been Soooooo screwed.

Well, Mark Twain said it best. Familiarity breeds contempt- and children.

In this case, potentially Half-Celestial/Half-Fiend+ Half-Fiend/Half-Fey/Half-PC's race children. If you play with BoEF anyway, which, well, if one is going to have that kinda familiar...
