Its unclear in the DMG, if you take this do you still get spells like you would normally for a sorcerer, besides the bonus spells?

No. Compare to the actual spellcaster PrCs, which have a feature of "+1 level of existing spellcasting class." Dragon Disciple is a melee PrC, inasmuch as it works for anything (well, that or a post-Epic choice when you can assign the bonus slots as extra level 9+ slots.)

Dragon Disciple doesn't advance spellcasting. All it gives you is bonus spells of whatever level you can cast. Say you go with Sorcerer 5/ Dragon Disciple 1. You would have 6 cantrips known, 4 1st level spells known, and 2 2nd level spells known from Sorcerer and one bonus spell known of either 0th, 1st, or 2nd level from Dragon Disciple. Your caster level would only be CL 5 (from the 5 levels of Sorcerer.

Hence why Dragon Disciple is good for an Arcanamach. Take the Mage Fighter ACF which gives spells (no 9's), then dip into Knight just before going Arcanamach. Take Arcanamach to its usual break-point, then take Dragon Disciple. Now, you are a gish

The DMG does note that the class is mainly good for melee though. If you go the sorcerer route it's best after dipping only 1 or 2 levels of sorcerer. Other advantages of the sorcerer dip are wand/staff usage (of any spell level), feather fall and true strike. All of these may be used while wearing armor.

No. In pathfinder, the answer is yes, at least for 7/10 levels.

If you want to be more caster/gishy, consider begging your DM for the pathfinder version.

The 3.5 version is mostly only suitable for a melee fellow with a one level sorc dip.
