Is there a weapon that doubles as a musical instrument? I'm trying to create a character who wields something along these lines.

The instrument/weapon in question isn't an axe, is it?

Realistically, the qualities that make an effective instrument also tend to make a poor weapon (mainly, being hollow). You might be able to justify it with magic, though.

That was my first thought, but I was wondering if there wasn't anything that could be bought as starting equipment.

Also, it's supposed to be a flute that can be used as a club.

I haven't seen anything that does what you're looking for, but I found a few things that might come in handy.

A Harmonizing Weapon (from MIC, +1 enhancement) maintains a song you started for 10 rounds.

By fluff, you could probably justify using the Songblade from CAdv as a separate instrument, using precise movements with it to create a melody.

Also, I've heard of people using a light mace to play the drums before, though I can't find anything in RAW to back that up. Might be allowed by a DM.

For the flute, you might be able to have the instrument made of out mithral. With such a material it would be easy to explain that it would resonate properly and still be sturdy enough to bonk people over the head with.

I'd say it'd cost about 1600 gold, 1500 for 3lbs of mithral, plus the cost of a masterwork instrument. It should be treated as both a masterwork weapon and instrument.

If only you were playing Pathfinder. Bards with the Summon Instrument cantrip and the feat Catch Off-Guard can be quite amusing at low levels.

On page 110 of Complete Scoundrel there is a blurb about an Instrument Blade. It's basically a dagger hidden within a music instrument though.

The steel flute is in Secrets of Sarlona. But yes, essentially a club.

Also, the all-mighty lutebow (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070314a).

And I believe there are rules for adding stabby-bits to musical instruments in Complete Scoundrel.

A large enough drum-stick could be used as a club.

So that's a flute about 8 feet long then?

Just play a bagpipe and ears will bleed.

I know this was asked YEARS ago...but I saw it and couldn't help myself. Bow of the Virtuoso (3.5e Equipment)

If you are open to 3rd party material, the Book of Eldritch Might has at least two instrument weapons iirc.

One is a harp/bow. The illustration that goes along with it has someone pulling one of the harp strings back with an arrow in it.

Use light maces and bonk enemy heads in, because thats music to my ears.

Complete Scoundrel has an instrument blade that can be added to a long handled string instrument.

Get DM permission to have a sword with a flute built into its hilt or something. Maybe a Scythe with Harp Strings, things like that. IF the DM allows it, you're good to go. Heck, fight with a one handed weapon (rapier?) and have a one handed instrument in the off hand. Or sing/oratory/dance. Those are good ones. Don't need hands.
