So, here's the place to chat, metagame, dice roll, fight over speech colors for yourselves and your pokemon (not mandatory, black works) and do other OOC stuff.
...Note that you can still do that in the IC thread, just keep it in spoilers.

16 Questions:
1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?
Pokemon Tabletop Adventures!

2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
Sandbox game.

3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
3-4. Yes alternates.

4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
These beloved forums.

5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
3rd level trainers, with one pokemon of choice. Just tell me what pokemon you want, its nature, and egg moves, and I'll tell you what level it will be. Quite arbitrary. Will likely be around level 5-10. This is to make up for a certain disparity between choosing, say, a charmander as your first pokemon... and choosing a scyther as your first pokemon. It is also to encourage pokemon like charmanders as opposed to pokemon like scythers. And also to allow for things like egg moves. So yeah!

6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
You will begin with 10,000 poke. You can spend it on whatever you want pre-game, and keep whatever's left over.

7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
Yes, actually! No coordinators. I doubt anyone will care.

8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
No legendaries, of course. There will be a "guaranteed" list of pokemon you will have a chance to catch that will be negotiated after the game starts. As in, not a list of a bunch of ultra-rares. More leeway will be allowed to giving those pursuing type ace choice pokemon, as it just kindof sucks to have to catch a mediocre pokemon to fill in a rare-ish type.

11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Eh, standard rules.

12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Do as much die rolling as you can, and I'll do as much die rolling as I can.

13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
Yes, actually! I want to make it clear that, as a trainer, you are capable of a lot more than just ordering pokemon around, regardless of class. You can scare pokemon off, you can tackle them to the ground and tie them up if you run out of pokeballs:smalltongue:, you can try to do feats of acrobatics and such. All will simply use your attributes.

Ultra balls are 1,500 poke, not 1,000.
Net balls give a -10 modifier if the pokemon is water or bug type, not -5.
And you can buy custom balls from ball-smiths. Tacking an additional -5 to any non-standard ball (everything but pokeball, great ball and ultra ball) costs an additional 1,500 poke (for 2,500).
Additionally, you can buy special pokeballs from pokeball designers.
For an additional 1,500 added onto a ball, you can add a nature keyword. Choose a nature when the ball is bought. If the ball is successful in catching a pokemon, roll 1d20: if the result is 15-20, the pokemon becomes the nature chosen. You can reduce the required number for 250x the number reduced by, to a minimum of 5-20.
For an additional 2,000 on a ball, you can add the tutor keyword. If the ball is successful in capturing a pokemon, roll 1d20- if the result is 18-20, you can choose a move the pokemon is capable of learning (whether by egg or level or TM) and add it to the moves learned. You can reduce the required number for 500x the number reduced by, to a minimum of 10-20.

Pokemon center stays cost anything from 100-2,000 poke, depending on the place and accommodations. The vast majority of the time you'll be able to set up somewhere for less than 500, though- the expensive ones are usually located in the same city as the cheaper ones, and simply offer more luxurious services.
Healing pokemon at a pokemon center costs (amount healed*5). Status conditions or Center moves cost 200 each.

Natural healing rate for pokemon is HP stat/day. Natural rate for trainers is Con stat+ 1/2 trainer level/day.

Pokemon Center rate of healing: If KO'd, 1 minute per HP+10 minutes per status condition or Center move+Pokemon's level. If not KO'd, 1/10th this time.

14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
Yes! And those who I admit to the game will be chosen based on backstory. Make it interesting & meaty, eh.
You'll be starting in the coastal town of Heartshome, and can go from there as you please.

15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
Depends on whatever all's'yall's want. It's a sandbox game, after all.

16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
I'm... not sure if there is any! If so, run it by me.

The Aschen region:
The game shall begin about 150 years after the trainer Red became The Very Best, Like No-one Ever Was. Yes, the regions of Kanto & Johto also exist and have their own Gym Leaders and Elite Four, but don't bother.
This game shall take place in the Aschen region.
Things are a bit different than in the games. Being a Pokemon Trainer, going for the Pokemon Championships, is much like being an actor or artist: yeah, you can try doing it... but all things considered, you'll likely never reach much greatness and need to abandon it for a real job. Those who do reach the top, however- much like great actors and artists- are surrounded by a great amount of celebrity and even mystique. Of course, breeding pokemon or training them for utilitarian purposes has and will always be a stable career.
Aschen is south to the northern Kanto & Johto, and primarily desert, though in a Southern California kind of way, not a sand dunes and bones kind of way.
The only requirement, backstory-wise, is that your characters begin in Heartshome town, a small little coastal suburb on the southwestern peninsula of Aschen. Heartshome is much the same as all the starting towns in all of the Pokemon games to date, with one difference: there isn't even a laboratory. Just a little town. How you got your first pokemon is up to you, whether you bought it or were given it from a relative or hogtied it and crammed it in a pokeball later.
Northeast of Heartsome is a nice little mountain range that keeps much of central Aschen quite cool with a natural coastal fog barrier. Along the east of this mountainside is a route littered with small towns much like Heartshome that many aspiring trainers will come from. It is flanked by a forest to the east, and leads up to Sandberg, a small city with the nearest gym leader- to Heartshome, that is. Most will travel this route- route 423- to reach Sandberg. However, intrepid explorers will trek the Garin desert directly north of Heartshome, which is a much more direct route to Sandberg... and also a much more dangerous and barren one. Many, many desert pokemon can be found there, most of which are cruel and antagonistic. Beyond that, they get progressively more powerful as one nears the center of the desert, and sandstorms become more frequent and fierce. There are cathedral like temples that have been viewed there by satellite, though few have braved the deep Garin, and fewer have come back to tell the tale.

Both pokedexes and pokemon centers are all manufactured and run, respectively, by the Pokemon League. Pokemon Centers not only offer items for sale (pokeballs, potions, etc.) and pokemon restorative services, but also offer room and board to trainers, all at cost. This is to encourage upcoming pokemon trainers to, well, become pokemon trainers. There are two ways they capitalize off of this, as it most certainly is a business:
First of all, they make loads off of televising important battles and such. Think all the sports in a country rolled into one. Yeah, lots of money.
And secondly, the state offers subsidies to the Pokemon League because pokemon trainers offer a vital service as a sortof militia. Pokedexes are rather advanced devices, and act as both a pokedex, phone, and essentially a laptop/PDA. Not only that, but pokedexes receive broadcasts much like a police radio: in times of crisis, all pokedexes within a certain radius will ring out and tell trainers where to go to respond to said crisis. And most trainers are clamoring to do so, gaining fame and recognition for such acts, as well as testing the mettle of their pokemon and gaining experience (always important).

The team of this region is Team Eclectia.
They have a sort of jester persona, often wearing venitian or harlequin masks and, well, eclectic clothing. Each one is essentially a Batman Joker, living to sow chaos and discord. They have absolutely no scruples, and if they lose a pokemon battle, rather than giving up, they'll just shoot the opposing trainer. Most of them are dirty fighters or tag battlers, using whatever they can to gain the upper hand.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket lives on in the Kanto & Johto regions. They are (and have always been) a very pragmatic, mafia-esque criminal syndicate. They dislike Eclectia, and have come to blows over it. However, they rarely actually fight anymore, as their bases of operations are removed from one another.
Note that Team Rocket sticks to Pokemon battles, and have gained a reputation as pushovers because, unlike Team Eclectia, if they lose a pokemon battle they will always surrender- it's really more of a code, though, and despite this they are not to be underestimated. Their organized, disciplined nature is what gives them their strength.
In a nutshell using D&D terms: Team Eclectia is Chaotic Evil, Team Rocket is Lawful Evil.

That should be enough geography for now. Any more setting questions beyond this are welcome and encouraged!

Name: Adela Wyatt
Gender: Female
Level: 3
Classes: Martial Artist

Sheet: New and Improved! (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoyOW8c1ElyEdGtGb25pQlRFcUlEUGJnWkczNWZ1c 0E#gid=0)

Appearance and Personality
Description: Adela is small for her age, lithe, and compact. Her dark blue hair (naturally blond, but she prefers to dye it) is pulled back from her angular face, and her expression rarely varies from its typical state of muted disdain. Combined with her...abrasive...personality, it is quite easy to see why people tend to avoid this prickly trainer.

Personality: Abrasive, in retrospect, may not have been the best way to describe Adela. She uses brutal honesty and scathing sarcasm in turns, usually at the worst possible times for each. The worst bit is probably that she tends to be right. She is not stupid; indeed, her ability to find and attack people's flaws and insecurities is trumped only by her physical power. She knows that people avoid her, and she knows that she leaves more enemies in her wake than friends. She's never been persuasive. If she wants to scare someone, she's laughed off as a kid who doesn't know what she's talking about. If she wants to get someone to listen to her, the harsh words she says will frequently shut the other person's ears to her plight.

She must work harder to get every single achievement, use her sheer skill to overwhelm the invariably negative impression she makes. To Adela, life is a series of battles. Social, mental, and physical, it's all the same. Pokemon battling was a logical next step.

Background: Adela never found a place she fit. Her family found it hard to constantly deal with Adela's absolute lack of tact. She got in trouble at school for her insolence. Her cruelty, both intentional and unintentional, drove her peers away. Adela ended up spending more and more time at the gym. Every hit she landed drained her anger a little. Anger at her family for leaving her out. Anger at her peers for ostracizing her. Anger at herself for never being able to say the right thing, never being able to hold her tongue.

She won prizes for her fighting, but her family rarely acknowledged them. To a family of almost pacifist artists, a trophy based on who could hit the hardest meant nothing. And Adela 'learned' that her achievements meant nothing, in the end. She had no friends to tell, and her family didn't care.

Recieving an egg on her fourteenth birthday was possibly the best thing that ever happened to her. With the egg came the silent understanding that, with this Pokemon, whatever it was, she would leave Heartshome Town on her next birthday.

When it hatched as a Riolu, Adela was pleased. At first, anyways. Vichi, as she named him, turned out to be impatient, frail, unable to even figure out how to get food from a bag without being shown how. In Vichi, she saw a little of herself. And that little bit was too much. She was not kind to Vichi at first, constantly driving him to be better than he was, perhaps better than he could be given how young he was. When she was attacked in the middle of the night by fifty pounds of angry Riolu, her first thought was I should have seen this coming. Then she acted, slamming Vichi straight into the ground, breaking ribs and nearly killing the tiny Pokemon with one well-placed chop. Seeing his shocked, betrayed look in the instant she attacked hurt, more than the disappointment and scorn she faced constantly from her superiors and peers.

She snuck out in the middle of the night to get him to a Pokemon Center, accepting a scolding from the Nurse, and then another from her father when she came back, without complaint. After that night, she protected Vichi a little better, didn't cut him down farther when he failed. They built up a partnership, and slowly they began to rely on each other again.

Adela isn't sure if Vichi will ever trust her again. Or if she deserves that trust after what she put him through. But she has decided to trust that Vichi will always do what he thinks is the right thing, the best thing, he can do, and hopes that will be enough.

Bad Situation:
Your wishlist... problem is, those'r a lot of rare pokemon. You should be able to find a drillbur in the Garin desert relatively quickly, but the rest will prove challenging to get, and catching each of them will be a quest in and of itself.
Riolu is impossible to find in the wild on Aschen. They're only on mount silver in Johto. You'll have to either find a breeder (will be expensive) oooooor make friends with Adela and put her Riolu out to stud.
Scyther and Piplup are going to be weird to get. See, they're mostly extinct in the wild. The only places you can find scyther are in safari zones (where they've always been a very popular pokemon for sport catching, as they're fast and mean and deadly) or as a prize, or for a good cost (though not that high cost, as while the demand for scyther is high, breeders have ensured that the supply is very good too). Of course, you CAN find some in the wild... but don't count on it.
Meanwhile, Piplup can't be found in any of the regions, period. All "starter" pokemon are a pretty inbred bunch among professors and talent scouts, and most of them don't want to readily give them away, so you'll likely have to make good with one of those folks. Or get a ride to the south pole.
Beldum can only be regularly found in the mountain range by the Garin desert, at least 2/3 of the way up. Metang'll be even harder to catch.
So, aside from drillbur, you'll have problems finding any of these. I might throw a scyther at you, but that's it.
Sooooo, we can handle this in a couple of ways. You can either expand your wishlist to more pokemon and wait until you get these ones... you can just make do with 2-3. Or you can just catch whatever I throw at you as placeholders. Whatever works for me, and just sticking with 2-3 won't be impossible, just a little harder.

Ajadea: Knowing how I've responded to Bad Situation's wishlist, what do you want? Note that I will make any non-legendaries available... but the ease of getting the pokemon you want, and how far into your adventure you'll be able to acquire them, will vary.

Here's a list of fully evolved forms, though anything that could get there is good as well:

Pick one from each row to work with:

Gallade (specifically)
Scyther/Scizor (And I'm willing to buy it)
Garchomp (or Flygon)
Weavile/Mamoswine/Cloyster
Jolteon/Gyarados/Roserade Received. Technically.

I'm pretty adaptable when it comes to the Pokemon, overall.

1st row: Hmmm... both abra and ralts shouldn't be too hard to find. Not a problem.
2nd row: Absol is rare. Expect to wait a while before finding it. Any place you can find Deino will be largely inaccessible for the moment, as with Sneasel. Pawniard should be easy to get.
Snorunt... well, there's no really "icy" areas in Aschen, so ice types are hard to justify. See above for weavile. Eevee are much like starter pokemon: they're popular first choices, and so have largely disappeared from the wilds. Now they can be bought from breeders, primarily, or are given as gifts (probably the most popular pokemon gift- excellent pets, and with a simple evolutionary stone, excellent and versatile battling pokemon).
Magickarp are pretty common. Hell, just rent a rod while you're in Heartshome, or by a creek or lake in route 423, and go fishing.
Budew are "uncommon", all over route 423. As are vulpix, though only in the grassy areas. Numel can be found at the base of the mountain by route 423.
So, should be a simple enough matter except for your ice type. Though just getting an eevee for glaceon should do the trick.

Name: Timothy “T.J.” Saunders
Gender: M
Age: 14
Level: 4
Classes: Psychic

HP: 72/72
Str: 8 (-1)
Dex: 12 (+1)
Con: 14 (+2)
Int: 16 (+3)
Wis: 10 (+0)
Cha: 8 (-1)

Description:
In his early teens, Timothy is not physically impressive. Looking at him, you’d think he’s rather short and scrawny, though the polite thing to call him would probably be svelte or lithe. For someone who spent most of his life at the beach, he shouldn’t be so pale. His brown hair is impossibly messy and it looks like he either doesn’t care what it looks like or doesn’t know how a comb works. He also constantly slouches making him appear even shorter than he already is. Despite his looks, constantly training his psychic powers has given him impressive stamina for someone his size.

Personality:
He’s a sensitive kid, so much so that he comes off as very wimpy to other people. He’s easily bullied and has a hard time standing up for himself. He has very few things that actually make him angry and is normally more prone to running than fighting. How sensitive he is also makes him sensitive to other people’s feelings. He takes great care not to offend people. He’s always courteous and if he thinks that he’s insulted or hurt someone, even if he hasn’t, he tends to be overly apologetic. As wimpy as he is, he has a firm moral code when it comes to both his own powers and Pokémon. In order to avoid being used he’s keeps important rules about his psychic power use. First is that he never uses them needlessly and second is that he never uses them to hurt people. Pokémon abuse is probably the only button he has worth pushing. He’ll drop any civility if someone is mistreating their Pokémon. This probably comes from his relationship with his own.

Backstory:
Timothy Saunders was born with his powers. From the day he could speak he’s been able to hear people’s thoughts. It was actually a few years before he knew there was a difference; children say whatever’s on their mind to begin with. He accidentally revealed what he was in middle school when he was practicing floating pencils. Being telekinetic got him a lot of attention, with people always asking to see him use his powers and do little tricks. It wasn’t until he revealed his telepathy that things started going south. Being a mind reader made him untrustworthy, other students stayed as far away as possible and teachers made him take tests in other rooms.

It was rather quickly recommended that he be transferred to a psychic school, rather than staying where they couldn’t do anything for him. The nearest school was Delphi Academy, a decent sized commute away from Heartshome. It was essentially a psychic private school. It was an interesting experience, to have and use powers like everybody else. A lot of the conversations had at the school were entirely telepathic, and cheating wasn’t a worry as the teacher could keep an eye on anything that went on in the class. The general curriculum of his first semester, alongside all of the academic subjects he thought he’d be leaving behind, was mostly spoon bending and Zener cards. It felt like a semester long screening process to him. He was partially right; the tests were to train his abilities, yes, but also to gauge his attitude, endurance, and diligence. He had apparently done well enough to enter the advanced class the next semester, though he couldn’t help but feel he was hopelessly out classed.

Whether outclassed or not, it was inspiring to see psychics with so much more power than him, and learned a lot from his time with them. He was learning to move objects with greater weight, and to implant his thoughts into a targets minds rather than just let his own be read. His teachers impressed him to no end, showing off abilities he never thought possible. If he had that kind of power, he could really make something of himself. He’d be able to go back to Heartshome and show people just what he could do, maybe even change his old schoolmates’ minds. He began to dedicate himself, day and night, to growing stronger.

His first meeting with his Pokémon, Dancho, was less than auspicious. He often went to the rocky part of the beach during the off season to practice with his psychic powers. It was almost always empty, so he could practice telekinetically lifting the rocks without attracting onlookers. About half an hour in, T.J. noticed a little pink lump of a Pokémon, watching him from a rock a few feet into the water. Embarrassed, and admittedly a little shocked, he tried to shoo it away. When it didn’t respond he decided to get a closer look. The Pokémon just kept staring at him. He poked it right between the eyes and it stayed motionless, lying there on the rock. After a few seconds, it rubbed the spot he poked on his head. A shocked looked had appeared on his face, as if it had just woken up with T.J. in its face. The frightened Pokémon rolled over into the water.

The next time, T.J. noticed that the Pokémon was back on its rock, but it seemed much more attentive than last time. When he approached it again it got scared and rolled into the ocean again. T.J. decided to bring it some poffins from the local market to make amends. A few days later, with a bag of poffins in hand, he and the Pokémon literally broke bread.

The two had a close friendship from that day on. T.J. and the Slowpoke, who had revealed its name in a rather long yawn, would spend their afternoons together, whether training or not. T.J. was no stranger to psychic Pokémon trainers. Several of his upperclassmen and teachers had Pokémon. They would often talk about how their powers had improved from training with Pokémon. He also knew the school allowed for Trainer’s Leave, so he only had to put his education on a temporary hold, if necessary. Because the two had grown so close, T.J. had decided that if anyone was going to be his partner, it would be the Slowpoke.

He had enough money for a pokéball, so he decided to buy one and ask the Slowpoke to be his partner. That day he ran to the beach, excited to get his first Pokémon. The excitement drained away quickly when he arrived. Two men in clown makeup were standing above the beaten Slowpoke, talking about “how much money they’d make for his tail”, and how they “were sure to be let in.” T.J. was absolutely enraged. They beat up and were about to mutilate a Pokémon, his friend, for money. He yelled at them and demanded to know what they thought they were doing. They demanded right back and asked who the hell he was. Without a second thought, he threw the pokeball, captured the wounded Slowpoke, and telekinetically floated it back to him. “I’m this Slowpoke’s trainer,” he said as he began to float rocks around him, as he had been practicing for weeks. “Do you want to make something of it?” For the first time in his life, T.J. felt genuinely intimidating. It seems the clowns agreed, running for the hills from T.J.’s show of power. Psychic power was always impressive the first time a person sees it, and they can never tell just how much a person can do from first glance.

He took his new Slowpoke to the Pokémon center and told the nurse there what had happened. The nurse informed him it must have been a pair of Team Eclectia members, or at least hopefuls from their talk of “getting in.” After the Slowpoke was healed he returned to his usual self, begging the slowpoke to forgive him for capturing it so unfairly, and he would return him to the wild if he wanted. The slowpoke grabbed onto his leg as a way of telling him he wanted to stay. T.J. named the Slowpoke Dancho, and the two of them began to plan out their journey to help each other grow stronger.

Features:
Trainer Features:

I’ve Heard About This Place Before: Trainer Feature
Prerequisites: Pokemon Trainer, INT 12
Daily
Target: A Town or City
Effect: Roll 1d20 and add your WIS and INT modifiers. If you roll higher than 12, you know local lore, Gym specialties, major sights, and the names of important persons related to the town or city.

I Can Take a Hit: Trainer Feature
Prerequisites: Pokemon Trainer, CON 13
Effect: When taking damage from anything reduce that damage by 5. This does not reduce the cost of activating Features that require HP loss.

Arms Features:

Thrown Weapon User and Polearm user are gifted but won't be used as they conflict with the character concept.

Class Features:

Telekinesis: Psychic Feature
At-Will
Target: Any object that you may lift.
Effect: Add your INT and CON modifiers and multiply the total by 5 pounds. This represents the weight you may lift and items you may target with Telekinesis. Multiply your INT and CON modifiers then multiply that product by 3-meters. This is how far the target can be.

Telepathy: Psychic Feature
At-Will
Target: Any other human, some may be immune to Telepathy
Effect: You may read the surface thoughts of other humans, as well as project your surface thoughts to other humans.

Probability Control Psychic Feature
Prerequisites: Psychic, 16 INT
At-Will – Drains 5 of user’s HP per use.
Target: Any roll.
Effect: You may reroll any die, or have any ally reroll any die. For every time you use this ability per
day, past the first use on any day, your GM gets one Murphy’s Law point. They may use this point to have
you reroll any die that you haven’t targeted with Probability Control, the GM may only target your dice
rolls with Murphy’s Law Points.

Pyrokinesis: Fire Breather Feature: GM Granted
At-Will
Effect: You may target fire up to X meters away with Telekinesis and redirect it. X is your CON
modifier multiplied by 5. You can also generate fire in the air with Telekinesis to produce short, but
powerful, bursts of fire.
Mechanic: Kinesis Features function without applying your base Telekinesis; they replace
Telekinesis when targeting certain elements. In the event that a modifier would be 0 or less when
using a Kinesis Feature, your modifier is 1.

Meditite, common further north, but it'll be a while before you can get that far.
Ghastly: common in the right places. Crypts, haunted mansions in the middle of forests... so you'll know where to go.
Abra: simple enough.
Exeggcute: common up route 423.
Taillow: same.
Solrock: Again, further up north, and then more rare.

Description:
Gavin is a short man, standing at only 5'9". His gray eyes are hidden behind a pair of glasses, and his dusty brown hair is cut short. He wears a simple outfit - a pair of jeans, and a blue button-down shirt. Over the shirt, he wears a brown jacket, with special pockets sewn in for easy access to Pokeballs or other items.

http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa167/BluesEclipse/GavinWalker.png

Personality:
Gavin tends to view others from a detatched standpoint, focusing more on his work. While he won't go out of his way to hurt someone, he might not necessarily go out of his way to help them, either, instead continuing on his way. When he does help someone, he expects something from them in return - even if it's merely a bit of money to compensate him for the time he took away from his work. He rarely looks at others as equals, instead barking out orders and expecting them to be followed. This philosophy extends to his Pokemon, as well - he makes no real effort to bond with them, but upon capturing one he expects unwavering obedience, and is likely to discard a disobedient Pokemon should he have a viable replacement.

Background:
Born in Pewter City, Gavin was always a studious individual. His parents praised his intelligence, and at the same time pushed him to greater academic excellence. After graduating from school, he found a job working at the Pokemon Museum there - assisting one of the researchers who was studying the fossils. For several years he simply continued there, growing bored with the job, believing that he would never be able to advance there, but at the same time not certain where he could go.

This all changed one evening, as he was working late there. A member of Team Rocket broke into the museum, expecting nobody to be present, and intending to steal the fossils. Gavin, without even a Pokemon, decided it wasn't worth it to fight, and allowed the man to take the fossils and rare stones that he came for. The next morning, after reporting the incident, he found himself without a job. They couldn't keep him on, he was told, due to the losses. Gavin knew, though, that they were firing him because he didn't fight the thief, despite not having a Pokemon at all. Frustrated, he gathered his belongings and left Pewter, intending to find a job more suited to someone of his intellect.

A couple days after leaving, doing his best to avoid wild Pokemon as he made his way towards Viridian City, he found himself approached by a man - the very same thief from before. The thief introduced himself as Drew, and told Gavin that his boss had heard about what happened. His boss, Drew said, felt that Gavin's knowledge might be more useful, and he was interested in offering the young researcher a job - specifically, Gavin was to seek out rare fossils, as well as other items, in other regions, and acquire them for Team Rocket. Initially protesting as he didn't want to do anything illegal, Gavin accepted only after being assured that it wasn't required, or even expected, for him to commit any crimes. The hope was that he would simply seek out the fossils and either dig them up himself, or acquire them from others - buying or trading for them. Upon bringing up the fact that he had no Pokemon, the man explained that he would be provided with one if he accepted the job.

Gavin accepted the offer, in his own mind believing that he was approached due to his intelligence, and pleased to finally have such an opportunity. Armed with a Rattata, he found his skills quite useful in acquiring evolution stones and other objects, which he would sell to any interested party - though he had specific items he sought for Team Rocket, he made a decent living selling evolution stones to other trainers, as well. He continued in this vein for fifteen years, occasionally being asked to apply his knowledge to other subjects, but primarily continuing with his role of acquiring items for Team Rocket and other interested buyers. Over that time, he has wielded a handful of Pokemon - he had caught a Pinsir, a Magnemite, and a Machop at various points in his travels. While not truly abusive towards his Pokemon, however, he viewed them as nothing more than tools, being at best dismissive, and at worst neglectful. The Pokemon eventually became disobedient, and when that happened, Gavin held onto them for long enough to acquire a new one, before abandoning the disobedient one.

Gavin finds himself now arriving in the small port of Heartshome, in response to a new request from his contact in Team Rocket - to investigate rumors of Pokemon fossils of a new species that can be found in the desert there, and if they prove true, to acquire them. Carrying with him a Munchlax that he caught recently - and having turned the Machop that he caught it with over to Team Rocket - he hopes to find truth in the rumors, as such a discovery would allow him to prove his genius to the world.

As is customary for me, my speech will be in light blue. I won't use any specific speech color for Pokemon.

Oh, also, Orchestra: you should have 7600 poke, not 2400.

Also, everyone: I've made a few tweaks to items.
Yeah, I just extrapolated on the pokeball designer. Anyways, I'm going to add these to the OP, in the 16 under homebrew stuff.

See above for eevee and pawniard.
Sableye should be easy to find in the caverns in the nearby mountain range.
Ponyta is mainly just on Kanto, though some can be found further to the east.
Elekid/electabuzz is rare, don't expect to see any for a while.
Carvahna, either get a boat or get a pokemon with surf, as they're deep sea pokemon.
Starly should be easy to find. As would solosis.
And I'm going to declare that foongus do not exist. Stupid, stupid pokemon. Same with trubbish.:smallyuk:
Bonsly should be easy enough to find in the forests.

Right. Not having easy access to Carvahna/Sharpedo or Foongus/Amoongus isn't really an issue for me. To be honest, I just randomly rolled the bottom half of that list - but I figured a wishlist consisting of nothing but Eevee forms would've been shot down. Besides, having not played Black/White, I didn't even know some of these Pokemon existed...

Though I wonder who I'd have to killbribe to get my hands on a Genesect.

EDIT: Fixed it. Thanks for catching that, Orchestra - when I initially applied, I was going with Diglett, but someone else had an app in with Diglett already. I changed to Munchlax because, as you can see from the background, the specific Pokemon doesn't really matter - not at the beginning. Depending on how this plays out, Gavin may wind up learning to respect his Pokemon - or he may simply remain cold and uncaring, viewing them merely as tools which exist to display his superiority over those less intelligent than he is. :smallwink:

2011-05-17, 11:26 PM
Do note: don't bother saying "I scan this! And that! AND WHATEVER!" Your pokedexes have a passive mode that just automatically scans and logs any pokemon in the vicinity. Mainly, it's there as a phone/web browser/etc. Also note that I don't consider looking at the PTA pokedex metagaming, as I will consider your pokedex to have these things.
As for things like the researcher ability,
However, at the same time, what it has there is for most pokemon. You can and will encounter 'mons that, for example, have certain moves that it could otherwise not acquire.

BluesEclipse

2011-05-17, 11:31 PM
Yeah. Just add whatever pokemon you've seen to your "pokemon seen". Which includes, thus far, Aron, Pidgeotto, and each of each other's pokemon.
EDIT: Oh, and ONE MORE THING. I don't grant levels for catching pokemon. All that does is increases clutter. So, if you aren't actually going to use any given 'mon, then don't bother catching it. In return, I'll be granting "story" levels much more often.

A friendly tip: there's a reason I'm letting you have an in-game metagame device, and that's because I will ALWAYS mix things up. Always. And sometimes I'll not mix things up just to mix things up. Things like elemental ace and pusher and so on are going to be very common classes you'll find. And, of course, wild pokemon might vary from the norm.
So, your pokedex is a handy guideline. Hell, it's even already predicted one thing accurately. But don't call it word of god, and don't start freaking out because ursaring should be level 30.

Ursaring rolled a critical hit. With an attack that dealt 7d20+Atk+STAB.
I remember the result. Sortof. Didn't write it down. It was either 102 or 112.

68*2 is 136, even if she took 112 damage, she'd be at -64: Not quite -100%, thankfully.

Is there still a crowd outside? Maybe we could call for help?

Also: How much training does it take to stabilize someone bleeding their life out? The closest thing I can find on stabilization is the Medic feature.

Stabilize: Medic Feature
Prerequisites: Medic
At-Will
Target: A Trainer.
Effect: When a Trainer suffered an injury that renders them immobile due to a broken bone, a torn ligament, etc. or is constantly losing HP pay 550 . The Trainer’s HP stops falling and they can be moved again, they will still need assistance moving.

I mean, there's no reason you can't stabilize someone without the feature. But I guess it ultimately depends on how Gorgon decides to rule it.

I mean, there's no reason you can't stabilize someone without the feature. But I guess it ultimately depends on how Gorgon decides to rule it.

Wisdom check.

Indeed. Also, what arms feature would apply to using the rifle(as intended)?
Guns proficiency.
Guns are... both common and uncommon. Common, in the sense that most people are carrying around weapons as deadly as any machine gun on their belts, so there really doesn't need to be any restriction on guns. Uncommon, in the sense that most people are carrying around weapons as deadly as any machine gun on their belts, so they don't need guns.
There are two kinds of people who use guns: people who use them solely on pokemon, and those that use them on whatever. Those that use them on pokemon are the people who don't have pokemon of their own, and so need SOME sort of protection. Those that use them on whatever are criminals.
Trainers, for the most part, do not use guns. This is because while trainer intervention in pokemon battles is allowed, trainer intervention with anything more than your fists or maybe a rod is most certainly not allowed. Things like swords and spears are a bit of a grey area, but some people use them. Anyways, there's a lot more martial artists than gunslingers.
Again, gunslingers are generally criminals, or those who don't have pokemon. And the latter usually carry around a handgun or something. Rifles are often used for sport, but not the automatic sort you're carrying.
So, if you're carrying that thing around... expect to get some shady looks. Especially if people see you're also a trainer. It's not illegal, but it is EXTREMELY offputting.
Also, pokemon centers do NOT allow guns inside, so you'd need to find a place to stash it.
It's viable, and with proficiency it'll be a SUPERB weapon. But it's also expensive and not too practical.
You CAN use it now, as you can use any weapon... but you'll likely not be able to hit the broadside of a barn. At least

BluesEclipse
2011-05-28, 01:45 AM
Alright, so not practical, and definitely unwise to carry if I'm affiliated with a criminal syndicate and don't want to draw suspicion to myself(even if my actions are perfectly legal). Well, I'll probably wind up looking for a thrown weapon of some sort anyway, once this is done. Gavin isn't the kind of person that would carry one unless and until he feels it's necessary - and he figured the stories about Team Eclectia were exaggerated, so didn't consider it necessary before.

EDIT: Also... OW. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, though... Mach Punch, I'm assuming. Well, I can always bludgeon with the rifle, I suppose. I may not have Gun Proficiency, but I do have Blunt Weapon proficiency, after all.

On that note... do unconscious Pokemon gain XP?

Ajadea's post brings up an extremely pertinent question that I've been wondering since the beginning, and decided to take an "I'll burn this bridge from either side once I'm in the middle" stance.
Well, looks like I'm in the middle now, so it's time to get igniting.:smallcool:
After a short amount of internet browsing, I found this. (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=10929682&postcount=4) Sounds legit. More specifically, it seems to be quite legit, period. However, I don't like the sci-fi-y aspects of it. So I'm taking the gist of it, but adapting.
Now. Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science. Now, we're already dealing with pretty much explicitly magical beings, so I'm just going to say that pokeballs are magical too. Or, well, highly analyzed magic that is therefore indistinguishable from science. Anyways, I'm going to say the article is canon, but rather than "digitizing" pokemon, I'll say that the pokeball captures their "essence". This "essence" can and is uploaded into a digital form (computers), but unlike most digital entities, due to its pseudo-magical form (and being incredibly complex, comparable to the human genome and then some) it would take a truly obscene amount of processing power to do anything but transfer it. While on PC's, it's in essentially a zip file- compressed. And the only way we know how to decompress it is to release it.
Of course, there ARE companies that are attempting to copy the digital entity of a pokemon, much akin to companies today attempting to record the human genome. There are three competing companies doing so. One is attempting to copy a charmander, and another a pichu. Apparently Team Rocket, of course, has also taken extreme interest in this undertaking.

@Ajadea: Well, whatever, Vichi's out of the pokeball. Nobody is in sight. What do you do?:smallamused:

I'm not certain how much you need me to RP Gavin's communications with Team Rocket - I plan on assuming he's making regular reports on his progress(or lack thereof) as a matter of course, and get just a slight mention at best, but that when unusual circumstances come up - such as Gavin getting his hands on an experimental medicine that can expand a Pokemon's potential - it would be RPed. I'm also assuming that I don't have a direct line of contact to Giovanni(or whoever is running Team Rocket at this time) - Gavin's not important enough to be able to dial the boss directly. He'd generally deal with other scientists within the organization, or individuals that handle his supply and funding - individuals that generally aren't openly involved in illegal activities, so as to ensure plausible deniability. So, if you want to RP the entire conversation between Gavin and his contact, that's fine, or if you'd rather just summarize it, that's fine as well.

RP will come for anything more important than a general "Arrived in Sandberg, still looking for assistants" type thing.

I was looking over wishlists again...

Though I wonder who I'd have to killbribe to get my hands on a Genesect.

Oh, you already know. The leader of Team Rocket owns Genesect. THE Genesect.

Account of known legendaries (which can be found on the internet just by accessing your pokedex):
Genesect: Leader of Rocket Inc. Mewtwo could be considered a prototype to Genesect: they opted for less power and more control with this one, and succeeded in spades.
A note about Rocket: nowadays, they've "reformed". They're simply a very, very shady corporation. As in, doing illegal things all the time, but there's never enough proof to beat their team of lawyers, and when there is it's usually pinned on a lesser exec. Beyond that, many politicians are in their pockets, and shutting them down entirely would be crippling to the region's business sector, especially when you consider the fact that stuff like, say, protein? Yeah, that's primarily manufactured by Rocket Inc. They also make custom pokeballs, and have made the most master balls of any group. Think half-mafia, half-mad scientists, half-brutal, oppressive corporation.:smalltongue: There's bizarre research institutions that are probably breaking a dozen ethics and fair trade laws, there's literal mafias that even do the whole protection money thing, and there's pretty normal groups that don't do anything illegal at all.

Meloetta: 3rd of Aschen Elite four.
Darkrai: 4th of Aschen Elite four.
Registeel: 3rd of Johto Elite four.
Zapdos, Articuno & Moltres: 4th of Johto Elite four. Record legendaries owned by any one person, ever.
Regirock: 2nd of Kanto Elite four.
Lugia: 3nd of Kanto Elite four.
Latios & Latias: 4th of Kanto Elite four.

Mewtwo & Mew: Unaccounted for, after Red faced Mewtwo with Mew's aid. This was several years after Red had become the three-region champion and "defeated" Team Rocket. They really just went into hiding and made Mewtwo to defeat him, releasing it pointed at Red. It went wild, cutting a swath of destruction through the countryside (Celadon & Cerulean are gone, in their place a great gorge that filled up with water. It is now known as Red Lake). Red fought Mewtwo with Mew's help. This is the extent of what is known: they fought at the mountain range north of Cerulean, away from prying eyes, and all that could be seen for hours were flashes of energy. Finally, it stopped, and none of the three were ever seen again.
Ho-oh: Dead. Killed to draw in lugia.
Entei & Suicune: Dead. Both simply killed accidentally in the process of attempting to be caught.
Raikou: Private individual. One-time Johto champion. He's the one that killed Entei & Suicune, and is generally disliked because of it.
Deoxys: Private individual, the scientist who synthesized it. It's said he has ties to Rocket Inc., but this is unconfirmed.
Uxie, Mesprit & Azelf: Unaccounted for. Appeared flying across the sky at the turn of the millennium, but were scared off by frantic trainers and have not been seen since.
Regice & Regigigas: Unaccounted for. It is simply assumed they exist because two other regis most certainly do exist, and they have been seen on hieroglyphics.

Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus: do not ever expect to see these, due to all of the above having undefined world changing powers that I frankly do not want to deal with. Not even their names are known. Shut up and accept it.
All others: have never been seen except in legends.
Note that most legendaries are in the hands of the Elite Four. There is a reason they are the Elite Four. Yes, you'll be fighting them.

EDIT: Oh, also, Orchestra: I originally used Hardy as just neutral stat increases. If you'd like to switch it to that, go ahead. If not, I've always found the only +1 HP thing unfair, so you can up it to +2 if you'd like.

So the guy that signs my paycheck(more or less, anyway) owns Genesect. Good to know. And it's good to know the status of the other legendaries, though why do I get the feeling the Mewtwo thing is going to come back and bite us later on?

And the information on Rocket is good to know, as well. Gavin still tries to keep it quiet exactly who he works for - he'll tell if directly asked, but won't volunteer the information otherwise. I'm sure between their past experiences and their current situation, a lot of people are still distrustful of them. Though, it's nice to see that you're using Rocket as it should have been in the anime - really, the setup is the same, you just don't have characters that are utter caricatures of functioning humanity representing it. Though, if they make custom Pokeballs, I assume that means I could get those made fairly easily(still paying cost, but not having to jump through any hoops and possibly having a slightly faster turnaround)?

EDIT: Also, I gave my contact in Rocket the name Markus - the spoiler was just to let you know I had assigned a name. Still, he could be Markus Job, I suppose... it works just as well.

Remember that it's been 150 years since those days. Red's dead. Blue's dead. Giovanni's dead. There's still some dragon master guy named Lance at the head of the pokemon league in Kanto, though. Whether he's actually immortal or if it's just some kindof Dread Pirate Roberts thing is debatable, as whatever happens, he keeps out of the public eye.

And the information on Rocket is good to know, as well. Gavin still tries to keep it quiet exactly who he works for - he'll tell if directly asked, but won't volunteer the information otherwise.
Oh, well, everyone pretty much knows that Rocket is made up of criminals. It's just to what extent is debatable. Not even Gavin knows.

Though, it's nice to see that you're using Rocket as it should have been in the anime - really, the setup is the same, you just don't have characters that are utter caricatures of functioning humanity representing it.
Yeah. I mean, Giovanni was a gym leader. These are people who function in everyday society... but to be able to do that and pull off the stuff they do, they'd have to be pretty damn competent.

Though, if they make custom Pokeballs, I assume that means I could get those made fairly easily(still paying cost, but not having to jump through any hoops and possibly having a slightly faster turnaround)?

Yeah, I'll give you a discount on Rocket stuff. Remember that they're... a little like Nazi scientists, in the kinds of things they do- just replace people with pokemon. So, a lot of it is really experimental and frankly kindof silly (for example, making a genetically engineered super-pokemon). But, nevertheless, pretty much all the large advances in pokemon technology and an extensive understanding of pokemon anatomy is largely due to Rocket.
What I'm trying to say here is, even their lowest grade custom pokeballs are still really high grade experimental stuff.
Of course, saying all this, you can probably see they're going to be very excited by Gavin's little discovery.:smallcool:

EDIT: Ah. Markus Job works well. He just goes by his last name in a professional setting.:smallwink::smalltongue:

So, any legendaries that aren't dead or missing (Poor Ho-Oh :smallfrown:) are owned by the Elite Four or possible future antagonists, or have come down with a serious case of GM-isn't-in-the-mood-for-their-crap-itis. Hard to be a protaganist these days. I also like how Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova got the shaft and their legendaries are in the hands of completely different regions.

Also, the fact that the words "Current Champion of ..." never appear in that list at least make me feel like there's hope. That it CAN be done. It also makes the champs something to worry about if, by definition of their title, they are stronger than the guys with the Legendaries. So now I'm conflicted.

I love settings and concepts, by the way, so be sure to bring some out when it strikes your fancy.

That's because Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova don't exist. But, all accounted for legendaries are either dead or captured. That doesn't mean you won't get any! Hardly! Deoxys was synthesized not 20 years ago, as was the capture of Meloetta.

That means those cute half psychics they stick in the back of the dex are still available. Quick! There are no "regional starter pokemon". I'm operating on the assumption that the starters you get in each game are simply what the professor had available at the time. Starters are simply pokemon endorsed by the Pokemon League, which subsidizes breeders' efforts to breed them. They are chosen as pokemon that are intelligent, easy to train, have strong, interesting personalities, agreeable, powerful enough, and with a very noticeable power curve (it's very obvious that the more you train them the more powerful they get, unlike certain other pokemon who pretty much have all they'll ever need in terms of evolution and moveset by 20). The first three starters that were endorsed were the bulbasaur/charmander/squirtle trio. The other two have fallen into some small amount of obscurity, but the Char line is tied with the pika line as the most popular pokemon in the world. The next groups of starters released were the Gen II starters, and so on and so forth. The most recent starters were endorsed just 10 years ago.

That hope I was talking about earlier, gone. So to become World Champion you have to run through this guy at least three times? I imagine it gets easier after the first time, though.
...Kindasorta. He might step down from the third one once you've beaten him once. Or another person might beat him in, say, Johto, while you beat him in Aschen. Or he might even die, or disappear like Red did- after that, it's just the first person to beat the Elite 4 who becomes Champion of that respective region (but there's few enough people able to do that that there's not TOO much of a power vacuum).[/QUOTE]

Speed of course brought to mind Champion Rodric, one of the more prominent Champions of the decade. "Taking initiative saves lives," the man had said, and Nathan was inclined to agree. Rodric would excite the audience and opponent alike with his dazzlingly quick matches, but while speed was the cornerstone of his particular lineup, even the more balanced Championship teams held a great deal of speedsters.
In the past 15 years there has been one champion and one alone, the first person since Red to hold a championship in all three regions. That person is named Kamon Nero. Don't attribute inspirational quotes to him, as he's kindof a hermit, keeping out of the public eye.

1.23 came out. (http://www.mediafire.com/?jj3fb07vjuj9wou)It's most pertinent addition was adding some markers to trainer features. One of them was noting whether a feature is tournament legal or not. Many of these clash with my own ideas: as such, use them as a guideline, but ask me on each one. Also, certain features are legal in certain matches and illegal in others. I'll tell you.
Oh, and remember: pokemon marts, like in Gen V, are built into pokemon centers. They usually only sell generic stuff, though- potions, balls, healers, but nothing fancy. For really specific stuff (evolutionary stones, TMs, custom pokeballs, etc.) you'll need to go to specialized stores, or the department store in Volthselm.

Also, I'm not sure I like this rare item/stone hunting... particularly the stones. I mean, these are items that are each worth roughly 200 dollars each, and you're finding them just strolling around? Yeahno.
What I'd prefer to do is you'll find either shards (which can make the stones- 4 to one), or the single-use attack boosting gems from Gen V (PTA stats, held item, single use, adds a STAB dice for one attack of the elemental type).
Also, I'll only allow you to use the fossil hunting feature in specific areas (Garin Desert, mountains, seacliffs, and that's pretty much it.)
Rare items will be more... interesting items. I'll have fun with it. And so will you.:smallamused:

Those changes are fine. I can understand you not wanting to break the economy... those features were designed, I think, more for an economy that more closely mirrors the games - where you can, fairly early on(particularly in Gen IV with the underground), find things like the elemental stones just about anywhere.

As far as the Chosen Number stuff goes, it's down to how the abilities are used. When I use Stone Hunting, I choose a number and roll 1d20 + INT + WIS modifiers. If the result comes within 3 of my chosen number, the ability is successful.

For Rare Item Hunting, I choose a number and roll 1d20. The ability has to come within X of my chosen number, where X is the higher of my INT and WIS modifiers. In this case, 4.

I just listed the success ranges so that you wouldn't have to worry about calculating them yourself.

As for my having wasted levels on a crappy class, I don't see it that way - it still allows me to find things that have the potential to be useful, valuable, or both, and still fits my character concept. In fact, if you want to adjust Gavin's (subjective) travel time to account for use of these abilities, or just have the abilities result in an increased chance of encounters, feel free - it would definitely make sense that he travels slower when he's looking for things like that. And having to choose between safer travel and the chance of finding useful stuff not only makes sense given the world as it is, but would serve as a useful balance to abilities that probably should have some form of downside.

EDIT: Though... now I'm worried about what my successful Rare Item Hunting use will get me... did you know that you can make perfectly innocent statements seem utterly terrifying? :smalleek:

A couple of things:
First off, this is a sandbox game, so aside from stuff like gym leaders and a few planned events that will be able to be counted on one hand, everything is just made up on a whim/random encounters. So, if you just want to say "f*ck it, I go straight to Sandberg"? That's cool.

Second: Any non-evolved, non-legendary pokemon is available... for a price. You can seriously flip open your pokedex and essentially access pokemon craigslist.
In general, expect stuff like that. This is the pokemon tippyverse, and it does have internet... so get creative. You can find all sorts of websites with pokemon stuff, you just have to look for it.

Gavin mutters, before ordering, "Garan, use Curse!"

The Larvitar is flailing about
Practically frothing at the mouth.
It seems mad about...
something.
me: Where? I see myself, Garan, and a Dead Pidgeotto...
Gorgondantess: ...Really?
In red?
Anyways.
If anger equaled strength, you'd already be dead.
Thankfully, the thing is relatively small.
You're up.
Oh
By the way
Light grey is difficult terrain
Dark grey is nigh impassible.
me: Alright. Quick question: Does the Pokemon have to be conscious to be captured, or can I capture it after KOing it?
Gorgondantess: Here's the deal: yes, you can capture it after KOing it, but I roll death saving throws for wild pokemon at -1% HP or less
So, it's risky.
me: Alright. In that case...
Gavin takes a couple of steps back(to K7), wincing due to the injuries to his foot, and calls, "Garan, defend me, and use Counter." Garan nods, and shifts his stance, ready to move if the Larvitar tries to attack either him or his trainer.
Gavin's one row down, btw.
Gorgondantess: I knew that.
:P
me: ;)
Gorgondantess: The Larvitar falls for it, and attacks the nearest thing in sight: Garan. It leaps at him, shrieking at the top of its lungs, and...
As it's flying through the air, Garan raises an arm. It latches onto his arm, biting and kicking at it furiously.
Garan barely suffers a scratch, and hurls the Larvitar off of it and against a rock.
But the Larvitar is back on its feet in no time, and ready for more!
(9 damage to Garan.)
me: I assume that move used Attack?
Gorgondantess: Yeah.
You're up.
me: Alright. Since you already basically scripted what Counter does, the Larvitar takes 18 damage. How's it look?
Gorgondantess: Still ready to go.
me: Nodding to himself, Gavin thinks, 'Hmm... yes, he can take it.' "Garan," he commands, "use Double-Edge!"
Gorgondantess: ...'Kay.
Garan charges forwards, and clips the Larvitar against a rock.
And it's down!
me: Hmm... Guess the Larvitar couldn't take it.
Gorgondantess: Garan takes 16 damage.
Down as in KO'd.
me: Scowling, Gavin thinks, 'I had hoped it would be sturdier than that. Still, I can capture it now.' Pulling out a Poke Ball, Gavin quickly whips it at the unconscious Pokemon.
Gorgondantess: It's level 11, male, hasty nature.
me: Capture successful, then?
Gorgondantess: You horribly failed your check, of course.
Yep.
And I'm out.
Gorgondantess has left.

Also, character sheet is updated accordingly.

Well, the world doesn't specifically hate Adela. This is because the world hates all of you. Saying "the world hates Adela" is sortof like saying "this rock is incapable of conscious thought". It's such a broad statement, and you're making it very narrow.

I also said I'd be mixing things up a bit. Beyond that, consider this: the average common carp weighs 11 lbs. Largest one ever caught? 93 lbs. All species vary in size, pokemon included. Going from 22 lbs to 40 lbs, especially on a fish pokemon- and an exceptionally strong member of its species at that... what's so weird about it?

And Gavin is officially broke. Fortunately, he's a petrologist in a mining town, so hopefully he'll be able to find someone that can appreciate having someone of his skillset on the payroll. If not... I guess I'll just have to figure something else out.

Also, 2 more questions.

1.) Does the fee for the center count treatment of the Pokemon, or is that extra? Having the Larvitar active would be nice...

2.) Does the Pokemart buy things like evolution stones(or, in this case, the possible Oval Stone)? Or do I need to seek out a specific buyer for that?

Nope- too easy to make a fake. You'd have to seek out a specific buyer. At the same time, though, this is a mining town, and most of these stones are found underground...

So, minor Gyms: There are gyms with Gym Leaders, and there are those without. Both are places where you're sortof expected to go if within walking distance to conduct pokemon battles. They can be found near any pokemon center. If you want a quick battle, they're a great place to go, or if you're looking for trades or the like. Enthusiasts also sometimes go there to watch the occasional battle, though Gym Leader gyms, being much larger and more serious, draw larger crowds.
There's always at least clerk there who will act as a judge, and can provide immediate access to healing and the like (though for inflated cost).
Do note that until you pass the mountains, serious trainers are scarce. This is due to two things: first, you're in less heavily populated areas, and second, because this is the least popular time to go out on an adventure, as an adventure usually entails a lot of time outdoors, and it is hot as all hell.

Hmmm... a few things.
First of all, pseudo-legendaries are kindof a big deal. They used to be quite rare... and then they were nearly hunted to extinction, so now they're really rare.
And beyond that, they're a bitch to breed.
The larvitar line, for instance, is notoriously violent and prone to attack, and I've already described what their bite tends to do to people. They used to be able to be found in and around mountains across the world, but by now they're pretty much only found on Mt. Silver.
Deino and Bagon line is a similar story.
The dratini line is a lot like pandas- they're quite docile, but they don't do well in captivity, and it's hard to get them to breed. They can only be found in out of the way places in the wild- for the most part, underwater lakes.
Gible line isn't as volatile as the above, but they're quick and don't like being in captivity, and can burrow... but they also need deep sand to lay eggs, so it requires a special facility to breed them.
A beldum has never been born in captivity, and have been hunted up to the highest slopes.
In a nutshell, acquiring a pseudo-legendary either requires:
Going to a far, out of the reach, dangerous place to catch one;
Great expense to buy one from a breeder;
Or, extraordinary luck, like Gavin, stumbling across one.
So, yeah, kindof a big deal.

Also, I'm thinking that, in yet another change... I'm going to rule that only fully evolved pokemon can breed, or at the least, any pokemon that when it was introduced was the highest evolution available- thus, scythers can breed, magmar, electabuzz, onix, chansey, etc.

Finally, do remember I said this:

Oh, and one more thing: I just read the guide, and the part where it says that giving free arms features is optional, and dependent on the setting.
So, yeah... no arms features. None of you have actual combat training, except Adela, who doesn't use arms.

I understand that I am making a lot of changes on the fly, as we go. The frequency of changes should decrease as we go, though- it's just that, I didn't think of everything during recruitment, so I'm dealing with things as they come up. Is this acceptable to everyone?

By Arceus, even my Pokedex is trying to get me killed... You cruel, sadistic GM. And making him have a cheery ringtone, of all things! What kind of monster are you? :smalleek:

Why do I get the feeling I'm going to be ditching nearly everything I have to escape this alive? My escorts, my Pokemon, my Pokedex...

I had better get a LOT of money out of this job...

Sorry for the long wait on posts. Things have been weirdly busy lately.

Gavin:
Psssst. Arceus doesn't exist, but there are religions that don't involve pokemon gods. Just say god.:smallwink:
Also, I think this whole deal is dragging on a mite too long. Let's arrange some time to do this in real time, eh?

Gavin is currently just eavesdropping - though, mind you, he's not being THAT subtle about it. So if he's noticed, it's not that big a deal.

Also, I still need to know what the cost of treatment is at a Pokemon Center(since my spoilered requests in the IC haven't been answered).

Healing pokemon costs (amount healed*level of pokemon)/2. Status conditions or Center moves are considered to add another 10 to the amount healed.

It's in the OP of this thread. Most of that kindof stuff is.

So as to not hold up the game too much, and so there is still progress, I'd like you all to think of a plan of action that would take up about... a week of in-game time, and post it while I'm gone. When I get back, we'll discuss what happened "off-screen" for each of you.

BluesEclipse

Alright. In that case, Gavin's plan is just to travel to Moira Town, and spend whatever free time he has there training his Abra in the Gym, and scouting for trainers that might be worth recruiting.

He'll also use Radiate Stone's weekly use en-route to get himself a Leaf Stone, and will also use Stone Hunting and Rare Item Hunting once/day while travelling(though I assume it's only going to take 1-2 days to travel, I'll provide enough rolls for the entire week).

Stone Hunting Rolls(Chosen Number is 16 for all rolls, must be 13-19 for success):
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]
[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]
[roll6]

Rare Item Hunting Rolls(Chosen Number is 11, must be 7-15 for success):
[roll7]
[roll8]
[roll9]
[roll10]
[roll11]
[roll12]
[roll13]

Should Marcus deign to send me a couple doses of Omni, I will use those on my Larvitar and Aerodactyl to ensure their loyalty. Otherwise, I'll wait and see what it costs to buy a dose or two first.

Oh, right, the plan...

Adela will go to Axelo Town, get that Pidgeotto properly captured, and then go hiking in the mountains, though she isn't planning to go too far off the beaten path. If she can, she'll find a local lake to train that irritating Magikarp at. Boring work, but the payoff is well worth it. Of course, she will wait to curse said Magikarp until it is in its Pokeball and unable to hear her.

Nathan will train and battle all the way Moira town to get them up in the levels. I would prefer to start out the game with a wild encounter to either catch or battle.

T.J. will attempt to square things with the strawhat girl as best he can. When he reaches Axelo town he'll look through the tourist available sections of the mines, maybe even attempt to train and catch pokemon for a day or two, if any are availble to try with and he's allowed.

After that, train along the way till Moira town.

Sven will spend his week first picking up a notebook at a store and sketching things around the town. Sven will act with the intent of tagging along with his friend Nathan, which he has been reunited with oh so recently.

He will begin to collect data, make sketches, charts/diagrams, and notes of (not only) Pokemon, but also buildings, road systems, rarity of certain types of flowers, and other trivial things which catch his attention and could not possibly become important later on in the story. The charts themselves would most likely be about how common a certain Pokemon is in the area, how often it is spotted, ect. Sven, although naturally geared towards this kind of research, is not an actual researcher so his data is not completely accurate. If it means anything, Sven's art ability can best be described as "somewhat mediocre but all-in-all not too shabby"

Sven's attitude while traveling would most likely be laid back, observing and learning rather than taking action. He would avoid Pokemon battles if he could help it. However, if Sven notices a cool pokemon, something he wants (like a joltik), or if his friend Nathan is in danger Sven would do something about it.

Since I don't know the contents of the journey and Sven is going to be mostly traveling, go ahead and throw whatever random events at me, I suppose.

EDIT:

Sven will still be making the journal, but after second thought he will get a mining job in the mining town. Since Sven isn't all that strong (even with his robotic arm) he will be using his Pokemon to do his job for him (and thus also training the Pokemon this way.)

Crushing rocks and what not with psychic powers and physical attacks.

Also if any cave dwellers (such as Jolteon and Roggenrola) exist in these mines Sven would attempt to capture them while on the job.

Sven would also draw the structures and the layout of the mine inside of his research journal in order to better understand how mines are built/maintained while watching his Metang break apart the rocks for the mining job.

Also if he finds any cool rocks or something maybe a gem? that might be possible.

Also, do you remember the sum I was going to add to the recruitment fund?

I believe it was 2500/week. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - I've had to reformat my computer since we last met, and didn't save that anywhere, I'm afraid...

As for Pokemon levelling, I'm going to allocate XP as follows:

Lyle: 2450 XP, bringing him to level 15
Zen: 4100 XP, bringing him to level 16(and possibly evolving him - your call, Gorgondantess)
Archon: 3450 XP, bringing him to level 25

Characer sheet will be updated accordingly as soon as I get the confirmation on whether or not the Abra evolves.

I prefer IC over time skips, too, but if we agonize over everything we'll never get anywhere in this game.

EDIT: Also, I wasn't trying to criticize anyone here: I was just trying to say, YOU CAN DO THIS. You can do whatever you want. And it can very well pay to go with what YOU want, as opposed to the mundane "catch-train-fight" that's been in every pokemon game since the beginning. Not that it's a bad thing- it's what I love about this game, and it really should be the focus of the game- but there should be more to it than just that.

Don't forget the part where they chase you onto land, regardless of whether they should be able to move out of the water or not.

I'm not sure whether this makes you the worst fisher ever, or the best... you get them to come to you, with the intent to maim and kill.

You mean that the ones she encounters are large, special in some way, and generally want to rip her into tiny pieces and consume her? Yeah, I'm beginning to notice that myself.

Well, in my own defense, most of the pokemon y'alls will encounter will be "special in some way". How would you like it if, instead of finding what you have, you'd find a bland, level 5 magikarp, who only knows splash, and just flops around uselessly? That'd be boring! I've gotta make you work for it!
Oh, and while the magikarp was a cheap shot, tentacruel can go overland just fine. They actually have a pretty decent overland speed, which I'm sure Adela will certainly be lamenting here in a moment.

Speaking of which, I'd like to make it clear that the only reason Adela isn't currently in what's probably some weird Japanese guy's fantasy is because A: she has a high dexterity score and, just as importantly, B: she's a martial artist. Yes, your classes count for more than just features. For example, Adela is going to have much better reflexes and generally be more nimble than the rest of you. Meanwhile, notice that Nathan got more poke than most for his battles- courtesy of being an ace trainer. Meanwhile, Gavin, due to having probably one of the lamest base classes in this game, has likely the best ancillary bonuses- I tell him basically everything. For example, he would've known that the scyther Nathan was chasing was simply well camouflaged in the tall grass, and was likely just hiding somewhere nearby. He'd also know that if he pursued it into the tall grass, that while scyther are usually initially rather docile, if pursued they are quite violent and would likely leap out of the foliage and try to cut some parts off.
The more you know! Or, at least, in this case, the more Gavin knows.:smallwink:
