Would it be possible, without homebrew or DM fiat, to create a sword that cancels all magic it touches as per the Antimagic Field spell?

How powerful would such a weapon be?

The power depends on wether it provides you with a personal AMF or if it lets you disjunction/AMF people you hit with it. The former is useful because it blocks most forms of magic, the latter is less so because you aren't going to be hitting a caster anytime soon as a melee type. Now Disjunction/AMF arrows :smallamused:

That would need some sort of save associated with it, otherwise it would be far too powerful.

Spell-Storing + Dispel Magic is possible by RAW.

You can use that as a template to homebrew up something more powerful.

I think you'd be looking at a weapon that does on hit Anti-magic Ray.

Cost:
Caster Level Minimum (13) multiplied by Spell Level (7) = 91
91 multiplied by 2,000gp (Use activated spell), multiplied by 4 (Duration in rounds) = 728,000gp
+ 50 times the material component (100gp) = 733,000gp

That's been calculated using the DMG rules for item creation.

Final Item:
Sword of Negation
This Longsword seems duller than normal, almost as if it is draining the colour from the air around it.
Effect: Any enemy successfully attacked with this sword must make a Will Save (DC 20) or be affected by an Antimagic Ray spell. Caster level is 13, Duration is 13 rounds.
Cost: 733,300gp

I thought there was a magic item enhancement that allows just this sort of thing?

edit: Dispelling, targetted Dispel Magic on opponent hit by weapon, +6000gp, Player's Guide to Faerun.
Greater Dispelling targetted Greater Dispel Magic, +79,200, same book.
Superior Dispelling, area Dispel Magic centred on wielder, +3, Dragon Magazine #312.

That about what you're after?

The Holy Avenger allows a Paladin to use a Greater Dispel Magic once per round, at their Paladin class levels, but only the area dispel version. I've not seen anything else that even comes close.

Edit: You're right Serpentine, but those are 1/day, 3/day, and then I'm not sure about the last one. The 1/day is at CL 5, the 3/day is at CL 11, and again, not sure abotu the last one.

Yes, but it gives a RAW basis from which an at-will or constant effect price can be determined. If he really wants it like that...

The last one's CL was the wielder's level, I believe.

Of course, the wielder will have a hard time doing someting useful, if he cannot count on his other magical gear...

But then again, no one else can use their magical gear on the wielder either.

If that's what you're going for, try Runescarred Berserker with any kind of ubercharging build.

Bulwark of Antimagic: A +1 tower shield with an 1/day Anti-Magic Field. 27,580 gp. Draconomicon pg 118.

Karsus vestige: Gives you Greater Dispel Magic on touch, +2 DC to any magic item you use, and you can use magic items as if you were a Wizard with your effective Binder level (ie, auto UMD for Wizard spells). Tome of Magic.

Disenchanter Mask: This soulmeld lets you Detect Magic at will, and if bound to your Totem Chakra it can make a touch attack which suppresses a magic item or soulmeld.

You could also use the rod of cancellation/negation as a starting off point:

Cancellation
This dreaded rod is a bane to magic items, for its touch drains an item of all magical properties. The item touched must make a DC 23 Will save to prevent the rod from draining it. If a creature is holding it at the time, then the item can use the holder’s Will save bonus in place of its own if the holder’s is better. In such cases, contact is made by making a melee touch attack roll. Upon draining an item, the rod itself becomes brittle and cannot be used again. Drained items are only restorable by wish or miracle. (If a sphere of annihilation and a rod of cancellation negate each other, nothing can restore either of them.)

Strong abjuration; CL 17th; Craft Rod, mage’s disjunction; Price 11,000 gp.

Negation
This device negates the spell or spell-like function or functions of magic items. The wielder points the rod at the magic item, and a pale gray beam shoots forth to touch the target device, attacking as a ray (a ranged touch attack). The ray functions as a greater dispel magic spell, except it only affects magic items. To negate instantaneous effects from an item, the rod wielder needs to have used a ready action. The dispel check uses the rod’s caster level (15th). The target item gets no saving throw, although the rod can’t negate artifacts (even minor artifacts). The rod can function three times per day.

Strong varied; CL 15th; Craft Rod, dispel magic, and limited wish or miracle; Price 37,000 gp.
