So I was thinking... the name Swordsaint is pretty cool for people that fight with swords. How about spears?

I take it you have already considered Spearsaints? And then of course everyone names spear based character Dragoons.

So, spear-wielder, but flashier sounding?

Realistic: Lancers.
Following the pattern of swordsaint: Spearsouls.
Going abstract: Heartseekers.

Other: Speardancers, Spikes, Lancefiends.

You do know that Final Fantasy dragoons have zero connection to real historical dragoons, right? Yes, they were cavalry. However, FF dragoons have spears and jump everywhere.

However, Dragoon to me will always be this first and foremost:

The early Roman Republic fielded elite spearmen called triarii (triarius singular). I've always thought that was a pretty badass name.

Indeed. That's based upon their nature as the third rank in their battle lines though.

Oh. And I forgot about Phalangites.

or even Milites + X. Milites Pilum. Milites Sarissum. Milites Hastae.

He was referring to the other dragon. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blunderbuss)

(Musketeers are called Musketeers because they carry muskets. Dragoons are called Dragoons because they carried dragons. Both are similar guns.)

Also, the FF Dragoons were known as "Dragon Knights" (竜騎士) in the original Japanese, because the original incarnation rode wyverns. The translation "Dragoon" was particularly apt.

I'd always wondered what "Dragon Knight" had to do with jumpy spearmen.

That's pretty awesome actually.

Well if it were a bard.. HySpearical?

If Frostburn is allowed ... North Pole Armed Men?

If it is a fighter turned wizardy, scientist type ... The ExSpearimental Regiment!

For a name that is truly a breath of fresh air though, take ranks in Craft: Coin and call yourself a Spearmint!

Firechanter

"Light Hoplite" would be an oxymoron, Hoplite meaning "heavy infantry". ^^

Hastati (Roman) have already been mentioned, as Hasta means spear. The higher tiers of the republican army also primarily fought with spears (Principes, Triarii), though their names do not refer to the weapon as such.

I've read "Angones" as name for the Germanic equivalent of Hastati, although that's kind of a latinization. Ango is the Frankish light spear, equivalent to the Roman Pilum, but the ending -es is latin.

Another german light spear was the Frame (pronounced with long a as in father, has nothing to do with the english word "frame"), and was used as thrown as well as melee weapon.
