Hello!

I am trying to challenge my party and would like to have some ideas from the playground. :)

My party is a relatively well optimized, mostly caster group of friends who plan to take over the world/ end it/ just have fun. Yes, they are (mostly) evil but verging on neutral very often. Also, they are lawful, and quite pragmatic.

They are level 7-8:
Dread Necromancer 8
Necromancer 5 Incantatrix 2 or 3
Sorcerer 5 Academy of Arcane Studies Student 2
Cleric ? Crusader ? RKV ? I am not sure about the individual levels but the total is 7
Conjurer Focused Specialist 5/ Alienist 1 (Also, Half-vampire, long story)

The last session ended with them along with one other NPC porting to the Abyss to retrieve the Incantatrix and another NPC (sister to the first). The plot will involve them having to work together with the NPC (who will be taken over by the player whose character they are saving) to overcome some challenges and in the end steal the soul of the Incantatrix back from a Demon Prince. The sister NPC has already been found and will most likely suffer a terrible accident/death in combat along the way. (I am evil towards my DMPCs an the rarely make it through an evening.)

Now.. enough introduction. The plot is pretty clear and well defined in what comes afterward, this trip through the abyss is more or less a detour. I need some interesting and fitting encounters (combat or otherwise) for

1) The journey to the fortress of the Demon Prince

2) Rooms/ Encounters/ Interesting Characters in the fortress.

The demon prince has been deliberately left vague so I can have freedom of choice.

All ideas are welcome, and all sources are allowed. Fitting puzzles and interesting NPCs I welcome all :), combat ideas should pose a challenge. [My players tend to play ball hard.]

I hope you can help out a DM who has inspiration issues today:)
Thank you!

I don't have much to offer for ideas, but I'd like to feel I'm giving input rather than doing nothing but asking questions on this forum.

On the way to the fortress maybe there could be a large battle? Emphasizing the chaos in the Abyss? For some reason I thought of the idea of the characters being transformed into demons to pass through the massive hordes? They'd battle alongside some demons, and act as ranked leaders within the army. A different perspective of being within the ranks rather than the usual killing of demons. Maybe even getting a hireling or two? Would there be a sort of mess tent/inn for the urges of the demons? There the characters could mingle with exotic outsiders?

As far as inside the Fortress I'd think it would depend on the Demon Prince. If he's a warrior, he might have a gladiatorial Colosseum within that included many exotic and magical planar creatures or characters. What comes to mind is to think of the Demon and think of one of the seven deadly sins, and theme the Fortress on that? But since your party is evil, would the Demon need to be more evil?

Interesting encounter:

Demons escorting a group of devils to a collisseum, and the object being to defeat the demons. If the devils survive, they might give an extra boon or aid in the future.

Thank you both!

The idea with the demon devil interaction is really good.. I will build on it :)

The idea of disguise is also cool! But the jackpot is the idea of a sin :). I think i will take pride and see how I can develop it!

Thanks again and if other ideas are forthcoming please share!
