Calling those less technologically inept than myself!

Here's the deal, I have sound file, and I want to use part of it as a message alert on my phone, the problem is the sound file is to long as it currently stands (I don't want a three minuet bit of music every time I get an SMS) and I have no idea how to go about making it shorter.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to go abouts editing it to be the correct length?

First off, is this sound file on your computer or on your phone? If it's on your computer, you best bet is to download a program called Audacity, which lets you record, adjust, and edit sound files - such as, you know, the one you're talking about
