The dangers of space?

I was reading over the Alien creature template today and saw that it nets the creature +8 against Radiation and Cold&Fire Resist 20. The radiation effects are mentioned in the Environmental hazards for a Vacuum but not the Cold/Fire damage such creatures take. Or does this protect them from planetary re-entry?

As far as I know, they just ad hoc'd exposure to the vacuum of space as being party "vacuum damage" and part fire damage rather than deal with radiation in any extended bit for actual hard rules in 3.5, which makes me think that this is some form of homebrew.

There's no reason for a vacuum to deal cold damage. Even in total dead space with no stars within light years, you're only going to be losing a tiny amount of heat (with no medium for conduction or convection, all you lose it to is radiation, which is insignificant for the average creature). Near a star, heat might be a concern, but it wouldn't be on the same scale as fire damage, probably something that could be handled with Endure Elements. The lack of air is the only part that's really likely to kill someone.

Edit: and irradiation, but that's a different matter entirely.
