I'm rolling up a Sorcerer for a campaign some time in the future, and want to play a somehow dragon-related race (not a Kobold!), just cause it seems to fit and I like the concept. I found the Dragonborn race and I liked it. However, I have a question. If any of you have been in a campaign where someone has played a Dragonborn, were they forced to do the ritual thing to become a Dragonborn or were they just allowed to be one at first level?

P.S. also, if anyone could link me to a good CHA-boosting race, that would be nice.

Lesser aasimar are one of the few LA+0 races with +cha. It's entirely reasonable to be a 1st level dragonborn.

It costs money, so you do have to have it done. However, if you have at least 100 gp at character creation, it can have been before the game.

Incidentally, does the Darkvision from Lesser Aasimar carry over? I don't see it saying anywhere that it does or doesn't.

You lose all racial traits except those specifically kept.

Yep, your base race/templates are relevant pretty much only for their ability score modifiers.

Which is why Water Orcs (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/elementalRacialVariants.htm#waterOrcs) make such mechanically strong Dragonborn (they lose light sensitivity).

And as far as I'm aware, Lesser Aasimar and Spellscales are really your only options for +2 CHA without LA.

Also Star Elf and Hellbred (spirit).

warforged make decent dragonborn, but they have a penalty to cha.

Pull out your Races of the Dragon and turn to the chapter after Dragonborn. Spellscales. Dragon affiliated, Cha bonus, not kobolds... Sounds like exactly what you want. The blood quickening is nice, but you would lose that by going Dragonborn.
