I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this idea I have for an NPC to be used in an upcoming game. The game itself is set on a tropical rainforest-type island, with a small town set on the edge of it and used for forays into the wilds to see what's there. Political pressures from different groups of NPCs here will create the plot, but one of those groups is going to be people who are WAY more rich than they have any right to be, who come out to this island strictly to watch (via magic, most likely) as teams of adventurers go out into the rainforest and seek out whatever's left in the ruins known to dot the island.
As an extension of this, I want to make a sorcerer NPC, who for now I'm naming "Concierge". This poor sot is one of the sorcerers who literally had no choice in the matter of what spells known he received, and his first two spells were Endure Elements and Evard's Floating Disc. When he found out about this island, he immediately marketed himself to the people there as a "people pleaser"; His job is basically to show up, and cast spells that make the rich people's lives easier on a daily basis. And he hates it, though he tries not to let it show (ranks in Bluff).
If you encountered an NPC like this in a game, what would you think of him? Would you hate him? Love him? Be mildly amused and torture him for no particularly good reason? I'm considering making him either third or fourth level - third to add another spell known (Comprehend languages, naturally), or fourth for additional spells per day and either Whispering Wind ("Tell my husband he's late for dinner!"), or Locate Object ("Now, where did I put those keys.."). I don't think I could justify anything higher than that.
