So here's the fourth thread.

Older threads can be found here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150356), here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186632), and here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190052).

Okay playgrounders, here's a bit of a challenge for you. Instead of the regular old fantasy art, movie still, or anime, use a picture of yourself. Still should be game-related captions, though.

Here's mine:

Beware the Jabberwock, my son
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch.

He took his vorpal sword in hand
Long time the manxome foe he sought
Then rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood a while in thought.

I don't believe it ever actually says he got the sword from his father...

I don't believe it ever actually says he got the sword from his father...It's always seemed implied to me, though. All the illustrations I've ever seen for the poem depict the protagonist as a very young man (late teens or early 20s). So, those kind of support it, too.

Yeah, although it implies the father has all the experience and the youth has so little he cannot even find them (the monsters). That would make the vorpal sword most likely his father's. i.e. a fair interpretation. Its not like you find a vorpal sword lying on the side of the road.

Mother: Don't touch that! It might have germs!
Kid: But Mo-oooooooom! It's so shiny and looks so sharp!

As such, I have made none of these and do not know sources of the original images, save that they may have been mentioned in the thread in question, but I am too busy reading the hundreds of motivators to copy and record sources as well. Then again, the knowledge of my fellow board-mates is ever-surprising and they usually seem to be able to find things.

So... have you read a lot of epic fantasy? I'm just saying, while getting it as a gift from your dad is certainly an option, it's far from the only or even the most common way for a young, inexperienced hero to get a fancy magic sword... (Not that the exchange above wasn't hilarious, cuz it was.)

In Northshield, we call it Spear the Beer. One spear, one spearholder, one cheapnastyskunkedbeer, one bear thrower.

If you stab the beer, the thrower chugs. If you miss the beer, you chug. Best played late at night by a flickering bonfire.

unfortunatly, not any more she's not. since that'd mean DC has to admit someone has one up on superman (and they even have problems with darkseid having that)

white washed under the simple explaination that Marvel is powered by Magic, one of superman's Cannonical weaknesses. Simply put, Supes is more powerful but when he fights with Marvel it's like fighting where you get tazed everytime you fight back.

More that Superman's invulnerability doesn't work on Captain Marvel. Magic just ignores his invulnerability, doesn't directly hurt him.

Captain Marvel's punches are not magic, though. Captain Marvel has about two magic powers: the ability to call the lightning, and flying. He cannot harm Superman any better than a similarly strong, non-magical superhero can.

((If they did change that when I wasn't looking, I'll be so pissed.))

In Superman/Batman Public Enemies Superman and Captain Marvel fight and its more or less an even fight for a while and Marvel mentions that its because he's magic. He uses the lightning on him once in that whole fight, I think.

Same in the Justice League tv series. They fought and it appeared more or less even, no mention of Marvel's magic in that episode, though. He hit Superman with the lightning a couple of times, though.

Both fights ended in Superman's victory, of course. So at least as far as animation is concerned Superman's still more powerful.

I think its the fact that his strength itself comes from magic.

I don't know if it's more powerful or the fact that Superman has had superpowers most/all of his life and is used to be a superhero, making him more skilled than the 10 year old Billy Baxter who's had powers only some of the time for maybe 4 years. :smalltongue:

I'm not sure about Mikuru and Kyon's class, so I just winged it. I figured that our resident ESPer works better as a cleric than a psychic because of his religious overtones and the fact he only has powers when granted them by Haruhi's Subconscious, and I figured stick to core. Heh, I've actually thought of something like that before, how I'd stat out some of the DBZ fights in D&D. Ginyu tells Goku to take him seriously, and then Ginyu's scouter tracks power level as Goku proceeds to cast Divine Power, Divine Favor, Righteous Might, Greater Visage of the Deity, Holy Transformation, Recitation, Righteous Wrath of the Faithful, Holy Star, and a whole bunch more. Refluffed Favored Soul buff-bot with no healing spells and all spell components consisting of flexing muscles and grunting. High physical stats and charisma, low intelligence, non-stellar wisdom. Fits pretty well, I think.

Supes still has ultra strong bones, skin and muscle tissue. Part of his invulnerability is supposed to be something like a skin level force field, iirc. Captain Marvel's punches ignore that, and Captain Marvel doesn't have that field so they both feel the full force of each others punches.

In one game, a player did manage to come with an interesting argument, that if I recall correctly... he created a magical Fuel Air Bomb by igniting a Stinking Cloud spell, with a Fireball spell.. the DM was so amused by the idea, he let the player do it just that once.

End result... dead Hobgoblins everywhere, one party of victorious PCs, sans-eye brows that had been singed off, and NPCs from the nearby town wondering why there was a rising mushroom cloud on the horizon.

That scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl_5UwS57X8) is actually one of the few occasions where I think Superman is a good character. One, because it's him showing how powerful he is without actually coming close to the limits of his abilities, and two, because it means he actively tries to avoid killing the villains he fights, even though they're horrible people.

Darkseid's goal is to get the Anti-Life Equation and remake the universe in his image (he is the God of Tyranny). At one point in the comics, he gets his hands on the Equation and subjects half of earth's population more or less effortlessly, leading to this quote:

"I. Am. The. New. God. All is one in Darkseid. This mighty body is my church. When I command your surrender, I speak with three billion voices. When I make a fist to crush your resistance. It is with three billion hands. When I stare into your eyes and shatter your dreams. And break your heart. It is with six billion eyes. Nothing like Darkseid has ever come among you; nothing will again. I will take you to a hell without exit or end. And there I will murder your souls! And make you crawl and beg! And die! Die! DIE FOR DARKSEID!"

On that topic, I reckon that any setting with super-heroes should enlist any captured super villains to work in community service rebuilding anything that gets smashed to crap. And maybe some naughty heroes too, if they need to work off some heat.

Yeah, it was. Incidentally, I having nothing against super Mario sunshine except maybe bad voice acting, but I hear it was generally poorly recived compared to the rest of the Mario series.

But I like Super Mario Sunshine. :smallfrown: To me, it's one of the best because it's not just one of the 2D "jump on goombas, ride on Yoshi, defeat Bowser, rescue Peach". It's got those things in there, but in this one, you also have FLUDD and wall jumping and a bunch of other stuff.

Anyway, demotivator. http://i.imgur.com/QceA1.jpg

I like how no mention is made of the tens of thousands of dollars in collateral damage he caused, or of the numerous people who might have been killed when he punched the bad guy through all those buildings. Might detract from him being seen as the hero. :smallamused:

One of the death of superman videos shows him protecting a little girl about to be doomsdayed into the pavement. He flies doomsday into outer space, then power slams him down through the atmosphere into the middle of metropolis like a meteor, obliterating several city blocks, and doubtless killing hundreds of people. All to protect that one little girl. (who probably got caught in the blast radius anyways lol) What he did to darkseid is small potatoes.

I'll note that, at the time, Darkseid was not only invading Earth, but was attempting to wipe out all life on the planet.

Cut Supes some slack over causing some property damage while battling a literal GOD, who up until that point had been handing Superman his ass.

Seriously, though. Supes is super-fast, super-strong, and can fly into SPACE mid-battle. I'm sure the city would GLADLY provide some kinda super-arena where he could fly all the baddies and just go to town without worrying about collateral damage. I mean, sure, there would be SOME situations where there wouldn't be any option but to fight them mid-city. But when darksied or doomsday shows up, just move them to the arena and go to town. These are super-baddies. I doubt they even feel it when they get thrown through buildings. There's no practical reason to keep doing it.

Yes, because someone who wants to destroy or enslave all life, and what amounts to a mindless, nigh indestructible killing machine are going to stay in a nice little arena while you fight them... Darkseid and Doomsday are almost definitively the kind of enemies where using an arena is not going to be possible.

You know, I'm willing to admit... Hollywood has really made things tough for DMs. It's either pouring out movies filled with more explosions than a season of Mythbusters, making it a challenge to describe for how a mage has just blown up everything within a mile radius

Or, it's making it harder and harder for DMs to make wonderful descriptions of the land scape, weather, and time of day, without someone in the party trying to stop them selves from snorting a chuckle and making certain references.....

Yes, but you have to admit that Yuna's player totally gimped her between FFX and X-2. I mean, she was a full caster who had Planar Ally at will and ends up being a far superior blaster than Lulu while still spamming Heals like it's nothing.

Friendly advice; don't actually quote pictures. This loads them twice, increasing server strain, plus it increases the bandwidth taken from the hosting site.

Are you sure? I'm pretty confident almost all modern browsers are smart enough to notice it's the same image and only load it once.

Yora
2011-06-09, 01:23 PM
That's what the cache is for. For example it stores all the forum craphics, so you don't have to download all graphics every time you get to a new page where everything is identical except for the text. But the browser will download file abcd.jpg only once and then put it into every position the html-code designates for it.
At the most, it would put some extra strain on the graphic card to render the page, but that should be minimal and does not affect the server.
