We're playing Runequest and my character is an initiate of Orlanth, about two-thirds of the way to becoming a Stormlord (an Orlanthi Runelord). One of the requirements of the cult of Orlanth is that a Stormlord engage in a riddling contest with a Runelord of Yemalio (the sun god) whenever they meet -- it's also encouraged that initiates of Orlanth and Yemalio practice this before they become Runelords.
So last session, my Orlanthi met up with a Yemalio initiate during the quest and we decided to give it a go. I completely failed at his riddles, which the DM read out, and since I didn't have any prepared I just rolled the dice for what my Orlanthi said.
Rolling the dice kind of took away from the fun, though, so I'm asking for your help. What are some really good, tough riddles for me to use in the future? As an example, I'm looking for something like this (not entirely accurate as I can't remember it well):
I'm the farmer boy's toy by the riverbed,
The farmer man's pride during the day,
The farmer's last companion in the shade of the setting sun.
(The answer is worms, apparently, since they like water and crops and shade. That was one of the ones I failed at answering.)
So generally wordy ones that have that sort of fantasy feel to them.
Another one I found that's more along the lines of what I'm looking for:
What does man love more than life
Fear more than death or mortal strife
What the poor have, the rich require,
and what contented men desire,
What the miser spends and the spendthrift saves
And all men carry to their graves?
Nothing.
