Does anyone have experience with the Cortex RPG System (http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/14/14750.phtml) by Margret Weis Productions? I've got the Serenity book and I really like it; how characters are made, how you use your Attributes and Skills, it's great.

What I really want to hear about is the Magic system that's presented in that book. Has anyone used the Cortex RPG System and the Magic rules in it?

I don't have experience with the Serenity incarnation of Cortex, but I have read through the Cortex System RPG core book that was published afterwards. Magic isn't detailed very well in the core book, but one of the fans, Grim, worked out a fairly usable--if slightly flavorless--magic system that I've done some tweaking to.

You can find Grim's original system here (http://cortexsystemrpg.org/download/file.php?id=1965), and my revisions are here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AnudNDvj45FBdGkxQjZ6QWR4RWhQUldsSUxvRGUtR2c&output=html).

I'm still waiting for my chance to run a Cortex game, so it's good to hear that some people out there are still interested in the system. :)

If you want to run Cortex sword & sorcery you'll have to homebrew most of the magic. Cortex's magic system is kind of an afterthought. It only has about ten spells and they're all pulled straight off the D&D wizard list. (Seriously it has Glitterdust.) Most of them are pretty bad because they're combat spells that take several rounds to cast, except for Invisibility which is brokenly awesome and every character should have it.
