[Steam] Thread XXIII
Happy Explosion Day, Gorgeous

Cave Johnson here! You have been or will be informed that there is a chance you will come across a post from your future self. Now, whatever you do don't quote it, lab boys tells me that'll wipe out time, entirely, forwards and backwards, not to mention this thread. So do both of yourselves a favour, and just let that witty devil post about whatever he or she wants, even if the post makes you want to punch yourself in the face.

Has anyone played the Dr. Who adventure games that started coming out recently? (The ones that are free for UK residents but cost for everyone else :smallfrown: )

How are they?

Also: If steam added an integrated AIM function and improved their browser, I'd never see the Windows interface again.

hmm doesn't seem to be a mass effect thread anymore.

Anyway, I'm on my first playthrough, and, like DAO and Neverwinter, I've maxed my charm. And now I'm not fighting anyone.

Everyone seems to be able to be talked down, although I haven't had a chance to try it on the geth. What is interesting is that a single skill can seemingly eliminate all combat from the game, but I'm worried that my level is hurting because of it. Eventually, I may have to fight someone, and I'm worried I won't survive that.

I love it. I love it so much.

Plus Equalizer burns your flesh, and the more you're hurt the more damage it does. I can see it setting off in nuclear proportions. Of course if you look at it this way, Dogmantra is the only one who could use the Equalizer to it's full potential because he hates it so much.

IIRC, those you charm give the same amount of XP as those you fight. You get more XP from shooting those big Armatures on foot anyway. (which is fun.)

Don't worry. You'll have to fight eventually, but the game breaks in two fast if you level the right skills.

And you can always turn difficulty to easy if you get in trouble.

What class you using?

Part 9: TECHNOLOGY

"Admiral, make your report."
"We've driven the 6th Altiar Fleet from Sector 5C and the 2nd, 3rd and 5th Odysseus Fleets from Sectors 6A and 6B. We're once again in control of all space from Mercury to Saturn. He'll have to wait until the next equinox until he can mount a major offensive. We've got some breathing room. Maybe not much, but enough to do some rebuilding."
Grand Poobah Scuzzball slouched back into his seat, relaxing for the first time in many years. "A relief, Admiral. Get me the United Earth Council on Vidscreen as soon as possible then and we can announce our victory. The people back home will be pleased."
Admiral Imposter saluted and had made it halfway to the door before he stopped. "I'm sorry to ask sir but..."
"What is it Admiral?"
"I'm not exactly kept abreast of developments in black ops. Has there been any sign of-"
"Not a word." The Poobah tensed again briefly and a ran a finger over the scar across his cheek. "We've not seen hide nor hair of him since he took down the Gungnir and disappeared along with the Prime."
Admiral Imposter saluted once more and left. Once he was gone Scuzzball rose from his chair and stood by the window, looking out across space. Even here, in orbit around Mars, you could see the wreckage of a long and bloody war for the empty spaces between the stars. Scuzz fingered the scar again as memories of that decisive battle resurfaced, "The War for Orion's Belt" the newsvids called it now. He remembered the brief gasps of flame erupting from the collapsing engines, the Spear Cannon being blown into tiny pieces by a sabotage team, and watching the lifeless hull drift into the black beyond sensor reach with the Good Captain still aboard.
"Wherever you are Rutskarn..." he whispered aloud. "I hope you're safe."

Meanwhile, far far away, in a derelict space station hidden with the belt of Saturn a few key systems still hold power. Power enough to hold a few key people in the cryostorage pods hidden within the core of the station. In red blinking numbers, a countdown ticks away. Four days left, three hours, fifty seven minutes and eight seconds... seven seconds... six seconds...

The most broken class in the game.

Pump singularity and stasis, and at level 20, prestige into Bastion with the mission on the Moon, then pump the class skill to get super stasis.

Pistols, warp, and Spectre training are also good.

Ladies and gentlemen....
I present to you the latest in Cannon Fodder technology....
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m586/Gamerlord2/Byrnbot.jpg?t=1306367803
The MP-Byrnbot!
Two Anti-Proton Beams, mark III!
One Mark II Meson Blaster!
A Combat Scanner!
Three Mark 1 ion engines!
A Bridge!
Life Support!
Crew Quarters!
Now for the bad...
No shielding or armor, meaning the only defense the crew has from horrible space death is their unprotected hull.
Not that fast, so in a firefight they won't be able to quickly escape if things get ugly.
Very little supply, which means they won't be able to travel far from a base.

However, you can produce an obscene number of them quite quickly:
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m586/Gamerlord2/Redshirts.jpg?t=1306367804
I added the "JSS" tag at the front after taking that screenshot, and placed them into the fleet.
Shortly afterwards the fleet was attacked by a group of psychopathic crystalline lifeforms. The attack was easily beat off, but severl of the Byrnbot-class ships took a beating. Rather ironically, the JSS Redshirt took the worst of it.

@Jibpocalypse topic: Can ANYONE contribute?

I bring bad news for the Playgrounder fleet.
The previously mentioned Crystallian lifeforms had started to become a far more serious threat, so the fleet was sent to conquer the homeworld.
The enemey was prepared for us. A massive network of planetary defenses had been constructed before we entered orbit. The plan was supposed to be simple: the fleet would escort a ship designed for combating planets called the Nightmare Moon towards the planet, where it would eliminate the presumed to be minor defenses.
They weren't so minor.
Upon entering position, the Drager detected 20+ missiles heading straight for it.
In context, a single one of these could cripple it. Overkill incarnate.
It tried to escape, but the missiles were faster.
The Volater was then ripped apart by 15+ lasers.
The fleet was being hit hard. The Nightmare Moon sacrificed itself to save the MP Byrnbot ships, drawing the fire of the planet while they escaped.
A "Playgrounder-B" is on the drawing board. WE SHALL AVENGE YOU!:smallfurious: Well, since I am making Drager-II and Volater-IIs it is not that bad but still, WE SHALL AVENGE YOU! :smallfurious: :smalltongue:

I love this game  .

Anyway, any more recruits for the fleet?

Eh, less skill? I would debate that. Revenant AR takes some getting used to. It being slower? I agree. But I liked the shooty shooty parts anyway.

Less skill is a definite thing.

Common verdict is soldier is the easiest class, and Vanguard is possibly the hardest. Soldier is, once you get it down:

Hammer adrenaline rush with a good ammo loaded.

Shoot.

I beat soldier and vanguard on insanity. Soldier, it was my first time with the ME2 version of the class, and my first play on insanity. Vanguard, I'd beaten the game with the class three times.

Soldier was a cakewalk. Vanguard I had to be at the top of my game the whole time.

Okay, so I played Soldier like that. So what? I like shooting things with assault rifles in bullet time. Charging and SHOTGUN to the face may be challenging, but I play Mass Effect to be cool, kill geth and don't afraid of anything.

No, I mean: I like staying behind my expendable meatshields and picking off enemies one by one with a neverending hail of highly accurate, highly damaging tungsten slugs.

A person who charges into melee range with an enemy and blows their head off with a shotgun is a braver man/woman/machine/thing than me. I'm not brave, but I certainly am polite and efficient.

I personally use the mic that came with my Rock Band game. I hear it has decent audio pickup quality and is basically the epitome of plug-and-play, but the fact that it isn't a headset, but an actual mic makes it slightly less convenient. I stand it up in a plastic cup in front of my keyboard.

One advantage, though, is I get to stick my headphones into my speakers and not a USB slot, making it easier to take out and plug in, as the USB headphones I've used require you to restart the program to change where the sound comes out.

Oh, you're right, and then that ring of lights would be the fortress island with all the fuel tanks on it!

Just so I can get on Mumble, simultaneously play EU3 and Perfect Cherry Blossom, pretend they're both multiplayer and subsequently confuse everyone, you understand.

You did say "whatever games", yes?

Actually, a few of us /do/ play EUIII while chatting on Mumble. Pick a more singleplayer game. :smalltongue: But actually, the only games that people don't generally play on Mumble are games wjere dialogue matters.

Speaking of EUIII, why do I get an error message everytime I quit the game? It's just a minor annoyance, but I really would like to get to the bottom of this.

Also, France is a royal pain. Every. Single. Time.

It can. It's not an expansion; it's like the Half-Life 2 episodes.

WARNING: If not properly prepared, the tutorial in Space Rangers 2 WILL obliterate you.
It is pretty much this:
"Go destroy this probe. Oh, and it can fight back, and is faster then you." and then they forget to tell you that thing can mop the floor with you unless you purchase some upgrades beforehand.
If you're still interested, you can find the two games on GOG for $10 each.
Also, we have tried tossing Russians in a room and not letting them out until they have made a game. We got Fantasy Wars.

Status report on the fleet in SEIV:
WE WON!
The attack was executed brilliantly. We faced even worse odds then last time and still prevailed. With the capture the Crystillian homeworld, we have gained a planet filled with resources and already developed, though it needs some repairs from our bombardment. It was not without tragedy however, the Spartacus and Redshirt were destroyed. A more advanced version of the anti-planet ship assisting the fleet called the Celesta was also destroyed. The Grif and Zergling were nearly destroyed, but managed to survive, the Grif losing 98% of the ship. It was eventually repaired. The planet is more critical then ever though. Why?
Because the sun of our homeworld went supernova and destroyed everything in the system, including the homeworld and the 4000 million people on it. We have many colonies though, so we will recover. The "Bayar" and "King" classes have finished design, the first few starting to leave the construction docks. In other news, we have started a war with another species called the "Eee".

Incidentally, if anyone is in Washington DC and is willing to ruin their anonymity to say hi, maybe we can say hi!

Subtle, clever tactics par excellence.

I already have dozens of underhanded things to do with assault specialists. I would say I can't wait to try out the more advanced units, and I am eager to test the terrain destruction engine, but the sheer utility of a shotgun to the back?

Hard to beat. Already had an enemy gate is down moment.

Well, there are maps made specifically for PvP, however, a lot of them are rather small. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a specific map, however, a brawl in Hell sounds fine. If that's the case there's an all-hell map that I'll use. People who don't have the Obsidian skull would be at a large disadvantage, and there'd be tons of monsters interrupting out fight, though.

While the first game is fun, it does get somewhat repetitive rather quickly. I would recommend just getting the second game, as it pretty much has everything from the first game plus a bunch more gameplay-wise. Make sure to read the spoilers for the first game so you are caught up on story before you start the second game though.

This will probably be livestreamed at xp194's Livestream Channel, and will have audio commentary from both of us.

Can we get a rough estimate of how many people will be there?

Hey, thats shortly after Neftren and I planned to play. Maybe we SHOULD combine into a group

C'mon Dis, he didn't say he was going to Darwin. I mean Sydney is meh...but hey he didn't go to Canberra either right? I hear Canberra is pretty....ugh.

Sydney is terrible because it is not Melbourne. Brisbane is terrible because it is not Melbourne. Cairns is terrible because it is not Broome or Hobart.

Also, the NT at this time of year isn't too bad, especially just for a week or so of sight seeings. Canberra is a lol city that is terrible and only has the national gallery. And that is it :-|
Also politics but screw that.

Anyone having issues registering their R6:Vegas 2 CD-Key with Ubisoft?

Explain the problem, I may be able to help.

If it's trying to create a login for Ubisoft, then the page they send you to ingame won't work; it's obsolete. To solve this problem, go to the Ubisoft page and manually make an account, then try to log in with this account.

Of it's to do with the code they give you not working, ya probably have to go to Steam Support or Ubisoft Support for that.

Today we learned:

-Chain Link Fences are the most bulletproof material in existence
-Grenades are a great source of hilarity
-Nefren is really good at R6V2
-We cannot seem to keep a car intact, no matter how hard we try
-Running into bullets does not make them slow down
-Always knock first, then grenade
-The Spaz 12 comes standard with homing bullets
-Stealing Neftren's guns is the best way to get good equipment
-Though the location is nice, the neighbors in Murdertown suck
-R6V2 is actually a gigantic Counter Strike Cosplay Convention. And everyone brought real guns.

Bleh. Maybe I should use the crappiest guns in this game, so you guys will stop picking them up! Oh, no, wait... you'll then think that those guns are the best in the game, and then you'll refuse to use anything else. Hmmm, actually, that might be a good thing! :smalltongue:

A few things I have also learned in Rainbow Six Vegas 2:

Crab-walking players are ridiculously accurate.
Assault rifles are not to be blind-fired. They are to be fired from a crouching position in full-auto with a suppressor.
Any sniper rifle will have an increased chance to score an instant headshot if blind-fired at an approaching enemy.
Any machine gun must be emptied completely when blind-fired.
Any submachine gun must be emptied completely, with a suppressor attached, when blind-fired.
When approaching a doorway, blind-fire into the room for best effect.
When in cover, blind-fire periodically to keep those terrorists on their toes. Scare the hell right outta them.
Blind-fire solves 90% of your terrorist problems.
By definition, your teammates are terrorists of some kind.
Blind-fire is responsible for 90% of friendly fire casualties.
Always throw grenades at cars that have terrorists congregating around them.
xp194 will never have that swanky saloon car on display in that casino.

The idea is to use paypal - The game on steam comes with 2 copies. One person pays for both, and then gives the other away once he receives payment on paypal.

Speaking of Frozen Synapse, a little something I noticed reading Paul Taylor's post for Penny Arcade: (http://www.penny-arcade.com/2011/5/30/)

I saw real people, engrossed in the game, after walking in off the street at Nottingham's incredible Gamecity festival, and I believed.

That's where I first saw the game and I now regret more than anything not hanging around to get a turn at it.

I may be the only one irritated by this, but I am. the Magicka team has released so many DLC's, but the core game is so buggy, randomly dropping players from a game/freezing and spazzing out.

Is it too much to ask the development team to fix the game so people can actaully play it, before releasing several DLCs? Oh, right, I play a PC, so apparently yes, it is too much to ask.

(and yes, I know that some bugs have been fixed, but multiplayer still drops people, and still freezes screens during boss battles, at least according to the last game I played a few weeks ago.)

Standard PRO-DLC rhetoric: Saying that bug fixes should happen before DLC is like saying that we should wait for the electrician to wire up the old house before letting the carpenters start on the next one.

Maps and Netcode are two different fields, with different specialists in charge.

This is akin to complaining why an MMO patch is later but the art team released some new cosmetic items and a sparkle pony. However, the example seems to be broad enough to say that the company could have shifted some resources.

Oh by all means, the AI is good. I was stuck on the third mission for ages. Still haven't got past the fourth.
They're so good that if I don't win the first turn, I restart the whole map. Lose more than two units, that's it, unwinnable. Restart. Spawn too far from cover, that's it, restart.
Try doing AI skirmishes too. The default settings always gives the AI two rocket launchers, which they will thread through the map like a needle with such unerring precision you'd swear they possessed the oracle's sight.
Though all those rockets has taught me that in an emergency you can actually duck under the explosion at a certain range. It's a mad idea, but if you've really got no hope left... duck.

Apparently in real life, the insanely awesome special forces deal with this sort of [expletive] on bad days; outnumbered (sometimes three to one), outgunned (bringing rifles to a rocketfight), and out of time (ooh look, hostages).

And they still manage to pull these things off. I reckon Frozen Synapse is a tactical command tool that got sold as a game. :smalltongue:

Oh by all means, the AI is good. I was stuck on the third mission for ages. Still haven't got past the fourth.

Things that might help:

1. I haven't tested this, but I suspect that rockets can always be ducked. They fly at chest height and explode on impact, so if you don't give them anything to impact with they can't hurt you. Also, stay away from walls.

2. If you select a unit, or a waypoint in that unit's path, you can hold down the V key to see if it can trace line of sight to wherever the mouse pointer is. Now you too can thread rockets like needles, or avoid the same.

3. Make extensive use of the 'test this movement' button to see if you're inadvertently walking into a nest of death. This isn't 100% reliable because the enemy tends to move around, but it helps avoid a few mistakes.

4. Walking while aiming slows you down, making you an easier target, but it makes you quicker to react if an enemy enters your line of sight. Standing still makes you the easiest target but the fastest to react.

I actually have tested this one and unless I'm off by pixels, I don't think rockets actually collide with people. You have to hit walls for it to explode.
However, I think if you duck and then fire, you fire at a lower height. I know I kept missing one guy in my simulations because I hadn't realised the guy was crouching, so he kept hitting the cover instead of it flying over. I've yet to find a point where this is useful, but hey, it's good to know.
