In another thread, I pointed out that Elan rarely actually casts spells. I guessed that he'd cast no more than half a dozen since the beginning of the comic strip. After saying that, I started to wonder how close I was in my guess. So I made a list of all the instances that Elan had cast spells:

1. OotS0019 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0019.html) where he casts an illusion of a female chimera in a (vain) attempt at distraction.

2. OotS0066 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0066.html) where he tries the same thing (female goblin this time) while fighting Thog. This is a silent image spell and I expect #1 was also.

3. OotS0156 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0156.html) Elan casts some kind of unbinding spell to untie the ropes that the bandits tied him up with.

4. OotS0217 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0217.html) a disguise self spell to look like an ogre.

5. OotS0387 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0387.html) another disguise self spell, this time to look like the Cliffport chief of police to fool the prison guards after Thog breaks them out of the cells.

6. OotS0455 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0455.html) during the siege of Azure City, an illusion spell to make the goblins think that they had attacked and killed various good guys. Since the images speak, it's a more advanced spell than silent image.

7. OotS0478 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0478.html) defending Hinjo's junk, another illusion, this time of a celestial lion. This was probably another silent image spell.

8. OotS0712 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0712html) neutralize poison for V, when he's shot by Gannji with a strength-draining poisoned arrow.

9. OotS0721 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0721html) lesser confusion spell aimed at Enor to aid in escaping the EoB throne room.

Plus there's one more illusion when some of the OotS members are mocking V's familiar (which for some reason they don't think exists) but I don't remember where this was.

OK, that's 10 spells cast by Elan, so my guess was a bit on the low side.

There may be some that I missed. Anyone know of any more?

OotS596 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0596.html) where he casts an illusion of Belkar giving the thumb up to Vīs behavior (killing Kubota because he seems to be the bad guy and suggesting Elan to lie Hinjo about it).

OotS647 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0647.html) where he cast Mass Cure Light Wounds on the others, showing he has finally learned the importance of supporting spells.

OotS674 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0674.html) is where he casts an illusion of a familiar.

3. OotS0156 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0156.html) Elan casts some kind of unbinding spell to untie the ropes that the bandits tied him up with.

That is Animate Rope (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/animateRope.htm).

There is also Summon Plot Exposition (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0013.html) and Mending (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0400.html).

By the way, Elan's spell list is in the Geekery (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131219)thread. Sure it doesn't show how many times the spell has been cast, but it does show all that Elan has used.

5. OotS0387 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0387.html) another disguise self spell, this time to look like the Cliffport chief of police to fool the prison guards after Thog breaks them out of the cells.

That's not the chief- it might be another guard though. The chief (and the next chief- the red-haired guy) are seen here.

After a quick look- I think this is the guy Elan's disguised as:

In that same trip, panel #1, he is casting the image of a female guard in order to witness how his favorite ruse fails once again.

#397 - Illusion of a teletubby to distract Thog (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0397.html)

#400 - "Don't worry, door, this won't hurt a bit! Mending!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0400.html) Edit: Ninja'd on the 'mending' strip

I don't have the time to look for the specific comic, but when V was still possessed by the dead mages, and Durkon was short on spells people needed healing. V was going to try and use some conjuration but Elan cut him off by casting Mass Cure Light Wounds.

Edit: Wow, somehow didn't see that it was already mentioned. My bad.

Bards can't Still Spell spells.
I think you mean Silent Spell. Besides, the spell is called Silent Image (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/silentImage.htm) and it can be cast by bards. It's not metamagic. :smalltongue:

And even then, Bards can use metamagic. They don't get metamagics as bonus feats like Wizards do, and the casting time usually increases to a Full Round Action, but it can still be done.

Lol. Typo and reading fail. I must be tired. :smallsigh:

And even then, Bards can use metamagic.
I meant that Bards can't use Silent Spell metamagic (it's written in their Spells description).

Thanks everyone. It looks like I did miss a few, which was not a surprise. I count 16 spells cast by Elan (I'm not counting summon plot exposition, that was just a joke). With almost 800 total strips, that's roughly one spell for every 50 strips. So they come pretty few and far between.

Doh! :headslap:

I had another "doh!" moment recently about OotS0387. When I first read it in the archives last year, I missed the cultural reference of Thog's purple pants. Recently when Thog returned, someone mentioned that he still had them. And someone else gave a link to that strip and I reread it. Then I finally got it: "Doh!"
