A followup to this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=201492) thread, where the many denizens of these fora postulate on how a level 30 epic wizard would go about destroying Earth.

So let's do the opposite. You are also a level 30 epic wizard, sent by the great and mighty Thor himself. You are informed that a significantly powerful wizard of 30 experience levels was trying to blow stuff up. Your only task is to protect the Earth from his shenanigans. Your enemy is willing to die in order to take out the planet. How do you counter him?

I summon an Elemental Weird and have it use its free action divinations to calculate where my enemy is so that I can go there and get the drop on him.

Invite the wizard over for tea (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10810214&postcount=23)

I should probably add in that your enemy doesn't initially know that you're coming, since you were directed by Thor himself. Nor can he use divination to realize that you're coming until your first attempt to take him out, since Thor's divine protection prevents it.

That way, you can avoid a direct wizard on wizard conflict and use a more subtle method. Hopefully.

Assuming he's using my suggestion... Use the weird to track him down, then teleport in when he's casting Major Creation, and blast him to smithereens.

Wait, you can wish someone/something dead without a save?

He is unaware of me until the time I make my first move?

My first move is to Teleport Through Time (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/pg/20030409b) to a time where the mighty enemy Wizard is not a mighty Wizard, and engage him there.

Wait, does that split off into an alternate universe, or does it just affect the regular universe? If the latter, doesn't that cause an enormous amount of paradoxes relevant to time travel? How are they resolved? (For instance, if the enemy wizard had died at a young age, how would he have grown powerful such that you knew to travel back in time in order to blast him?)

As if he didn't have a crapton of contingencies for this exact scenario.

But if it was a fortitude save..

Ah, but I'd figure what contingencies he has, then have my own counter contingencies, to deal with his counter contingencies, and then...

Well, the thing is, it's extremely hard to prevent someone from escaping the battle if they have that many contingencies with epic immediate teleportations and other such spells that burst right through antimagic fields.

Gate in a solar which worships thor. Have it use miracle to kill the wizard. Even the harshest reading, requiring the god to actually accept what you want in a miracle, would allow this, as thor explicity wants the wizard dead.

Alternatively, I don't know of anything which specifically protects against summoning, nd I've never known a contigency to be set against it. Thus, create an epic spell, compulsion+summoning, to summon that specific wizard. Give it a permanent duration. Travel somewhere like the astral plane-what you're looking for is somewhere w/o natural aging, and where creatures are sustained even if they just sit around, doing nothing. Genesis with some specific planar effects? Whatever. Use the epic spell to summon the wizard there, with the command 'sit around and do nothing until I say otherwise.' It's not self-destructive/harmful, the plane will keep him alive, and until he's unsummoned, he ain't doing anything-least of all destroying a planet. Mission accomplished. Sealed evil in a can :smallwink:

But the spell is interuppted, and you had already hit them with an arcane versioon of trace teleport. It's going to be a game of rocket tag, only the field is the whole multiverse, and the rocket is a nasy spell.

Okay, it's epic level, this should be possible...

Mirror image the planet itself. No, it wouldn't do more than waste a spell or three, but if find the mental image HILARIOUS, and had to postit.

I would do something like (Dependant upon the rulesets and how long you have until the wizard arrives, I'm using PF):

Use Create Demi Plane (from Ultimate Magic) to create a direct copy overlay of Earth. No substance to it, just a veneer. Give it the Dead magic trait. Leave yourself a gate that is locked and only you know the combination. Once your target Gates/Ports/Planeswalks in...he's trapped. Subdue him in his now weakened state. Unlock the portal, portal to the Prime Material Plane. Destroy the Planar Overlay and all beings contained on the plane. Since the opposing Wizard cannot cast any spells, he cannot escape nor prevent the collapse of the Overlay.

Enjoy the peace and quiet of Earth and it's newfound safety.

Might be worth a shot.

1) Use Gate and other Calling spells to get the most powerful creatures in the universe under your command, including every other high-level caster you can convince, coerce or Dominate into helping you.

2) Find the bad guy.

3) Attack en masse.

4) Profit.

Every single magical effect he has can be overcome either by you (I would recommend being an Abjuration specialist and Epic Dispel the everliving crap out of him) or your allies. If he resists, call for more aid. Recruit more people. Send as many casters wrapped in Anti Magic Fields after him as possible. Do not give him rest. Seek and destroy. He escapes? Seek and destroy. Through the planes, through the worlds, through the very ages themselves. Seek. Destroy.
